Recurrent pyoderma in a family with a defect in leucocyte locomotion.

Granulocyte functions including leucocyte locomotion and chemoluminescence were studied in three generations of a family in which all male members had presented with recurrent pyoderma. While parameters of humoral immunity including serum concentrations of IgG, IgA, IgM, and IgE and of complement components C3 and C4 as well as the response of mononuclear leucocytes to mitogens proved to be within the normal range, leucocyte locomotion was found to be severely impaired in all affected subjects. Moreover, granulocyte dysfunction in male members was associated with the occurrence of a single hap

An analysis of world records in three types of locomotion.

The record history of running, swimming and ice-skating, over various distances, was analyzed. A mean period of about 66 years for the 18 male events and of about 50 years for the 14 female events was studied. Over a given distance the velocity (v) was related to the dates of the records minus 1900 (T) according to polynomial functions like: v = a0 + a1T + a2T2 + ..... + anTn. In 21 out of the 32 events equations of first or second degree fitted the experimental data. The mean correlation coefficient was 0.979 +/- 0.019 (+/- S.D.). The ratio between predicted (vlp) and actual value (vl) of the

Classifying sensory patterns and their effects on locomotion and tremor.

Methods are described for analyzing the patterns of sensory activity in peripheral nerves during unrestrained behaviour. In locomotion, nerves supplying ankle extensors and flexors typically show two bursts of sensory activity per step cycle. Variations in sensory input may be important in modulating the ongoing oscillation. Altered sensory input may also change the phase of an ongoing oscillation (as in human essential tremor) or may only have a transient reflex effect (as in Parkinsonian tremor). Various types of interactions can be analyzed using a model of the peripheral neuromuscular syst

Modifications of ongoing tremors and locomotion by sensory feedback.

In principle tremors can be produced by (1) mechanical oscillators (combination of masses and springs), (2) reflex oscillators arising from sensory feedback pathways, or (3) central oscillators generated by single "pacemaker" neurones or interconnected networks. Recent studies supporting each of these mechanisms under certain conditions are discussed. Differences between these mechanisms are clarified by recent studies in Edmonton on the premammillary cat. This preparation shows a prominent reflexly-induced tremor which can be modified by mechanical loading and electrical stimulation. It also

Developmental dopamine loss rewires striatal circuits to promote locomotion.

BACKGROUND: Motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD) primarily result from the degeneration of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons (DANs), particularly the Aldehyde Dehydrogenase 1A1-positive (ALDH1A1⁺) subpopulation. Pitx3-deficient mice exhibit selective developmental loss of ALDH1A1⁺ DANs but paradoxically display hyperlocomotion, suggesting compensatory changes in striatal circuitry. The dorsal striatum contains four main types of spiny projection neurons (SPNs): patch (or striosome) and matrix subtypes of both direct-pathway (dSPNs) and indirect-pathway (iSPNs). Activation of patch dSPNs

Spatial and network principles behind neural generation of locomotion.

Walking is fundamental to humans and animals, yet the neural principles underlying movement generation remain unclear. In particular, the relationship between neuronal cell types, networks, and functions has been difficult to establish. Here, we propose that the spatial organization of the spinal cord governs network-driven locomotor rhythms and patterns. An asymmetric "Mexican hat" connectivity - local excitation with longer-range inhibition and a longitudinal skew - accounts for proper motor dynamics, while segregation of cell types in the transversal plane allows descending fibers to find a

Tactile Sensing During Backward Locomotion in the Mole Cricket.

Subterranean locomotion challenges animals to maintain orientation and efficiently navigate confined spaces where vision is limited and local geometry is uncertain. Mole crickets (Gryllotalpidae), which regularly travel through self-excavated tunnels, provide a useful model for studying mechanosensory control of locomotion under these conditions. We hypothesized that backward walking, a prominent component of the mole cricket's behavioral repertoire, is supported by complementary tactile input from the antennae and cerci. Adult Gryllotalpa tali were filmed while walking forward and backward in

Coordinated human-exoskeleton locomotion emerges from regulating virtual energy.

Lower-limb exoskeletons have demonstrated great potential for gait rehabilitation in individuals with motor impairments; however, maintaining human-exoskeleton coordination remains a challenge. The coordination problem, referred to as any mismatch or asynchrony between the user's intended trajectories and exoskeleton desired trajectories, leads to sub-optimal gait performance, particularly for individuals with residual motor ability. Here, we investigate the virtual energy regulator (VER)'s ability to generate coordinated locomotion in lower limb exoskeleton. Contribution: (1) In this paper, w

Open-Environment Evidential Learning for Reliable Myoelectric Locomotion Prediction.

Accurate locomotion prediction in dynamic environments is crucial for lower-limb exoskeletons to provide walking assistance. Surface electromyography (sEMG)-based deep learning models demonstrate great potential for decoding user intent, yet most existing approaches are developed under restrictive closed-world assumptions. These limitations hinder adaptability to ambiguous or unexpected locomotion modes in real-world deployment, increasing the risk of unsafe control decisions. To address this gap, we propose the Open-Environment Evidential Learning (OEEL) framework, which integrates evidential

Flexibility in action: Development of locomotion under overhead barriers.

Behavioral flexibility-the ability to tailor motor actions to changing body-environment relations-is critical for functional movement. Navigating the everyday environment requires the ability to generate a wide repertoire of actions, select the appropriate action for the current situation, and implement it quickly and accurately. We used a new, adjustable barrier paradigm to assess flexibility of motor actions in 20 17-month-old (eight girls, 12 boys) and 14 13-month-old (seven girls, eight boys) walking infants and a comparative sample of 14 adults (eight women, six men). Most participants we

Cervix chip mimicking cervical microenvironment for quantifying sperm locomotion.

As the gate for sperm swimming into the female reproductive tract, cervix is full of cervical mucus, which plays an important role in sperm locomotion. The fact that sperm cannot pass through the cervical mucus-cervix microenvironment will cause the male infertility. However, how the sperm swim across the cervix microenvironment remains elusive. We used hyaluronic acid (HA), a substitute of cervical mucus to mimic cervix microenvironment and designed a cervix chip to study sperm selection and behavior. An accumulation of sperm in HA confirmed that HA served as a reservoir for sperm, similar to

Multimodal Integration Across Spatiotemporal Scales to Guide Invertebrate Locomotion.

Locomotion is a hallmark of organisms which has enabled adaptive radiation to an extraordinarily diverse class of ecological niches, and allows animals to move across vast distances. Sampling from multiple sensory modalities enables animals to acquire rich information to guide locomotion. Locomotion without sensory feedback is haphazard; therefore, sensory and motor systems have evolved complex interactions to generate adaptive behavior. Notably, sensory-guided locomotion acts over broad spatial and temporal scales to permit goal-seeking behavior, whether to localize food by tracking an attrac

Reaction Forces and Rib Function During Locomotion in Snakes.

Locomotion in most tetrapods involves coordinated efforts between appendicular and axial musculoskeletal systems, where interactions between the limbs and the ground generate vertical (GV), horizontal (GH), and mediolateral (GML) ground-reaction forces that are transmitted to the axial system. Snakes have a complete absence of external limbs and represent a fundamental shift from this perspective. The axial musculoskeletal system of snakes is their primary structure to exert, transmit, and resist all motive and reaction forces for propulsion. Their lack of limbs makes them particularly depende

Modelling Human Locomotion to Inform Exercise Prescription for Osteoporosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We review the literature on hip fracture mechanics and models of hip strain during exercise to postulate the exercise regimen for best promoting hip strength. RECENT FINDINGS: The superior neck is a common location for hip fracture and a relevant exercise target for osteoporosis. Current modelling studies showed that fast walking and stair ambulation, but not necessarily running, optimally load the femoral neck and therefore theoretically would mitigate the natural age-related bone decline, being easily integrated into routine daily activity. High intensity jumps and hoppin

Minimum toe clearance: probing the neural control of locomotion.

Minimum toe clearance (MTC) occurs during a highly dynamic phase of the gait cycle and is associated with the highest risk of unintentional contact with obstacles or the ground. Age, cognitive function, attention and visual feedback affect foot clearance but how these factors interact to influence MTC control is not fully understood. We measured MTC in 121 healthy individuals aged 20-80 under four treadmill walking conditions; normal walking, lower visual field restriction and two Stroop colour/word naming tasks of two difficulty levels. Competition for cognitive and attentional resources from
