Young adults comprise the group with the highest prevalence of both loneliness and alcohol use, underscoring the importance of developing a deeper insight into this population. Guided by the need to belong and the motivational model of alcohol use, this research evaluates whether students experience alcohol-related problems (e.g. hangovers, missing school or work) in response to a perceived lack of social connection. Specifically, we explore how feelings of loneliness are related to alcohol-related consequences, and whether this is mediated by coping, social, enhancement, and conformity drinki

Amidst reports on social isolation and loneliness's (SIL) link to poor health and mortality, the former U.S. Surgeon General and others declared SIL a public health priority and encouraged healthcare professionals to act. The medicalization of SIL differs from previous cases because it focuses on a social ill instead of a supposed disease, reflecting concurrent efforts by U.S. government and healthcare organizations to address social determinants of health through healthcare. Drawing on trends in journalistic, medical, and academic publications, content analysis of written materials, and inter

Loneliness has been linked with suicidal ideation (SI) in people with a borderline personality disorder (BPD) diagnosis. However, the temporal dynamics of this association remain unclear: we do not know whether loneliness amplifies SI within clinically relevant short-term timeframes (e.g., day to day). To fill this gap, we used data from a 21-day ambulatory assessment study of individuals diagnosed with BPD (N = 152, 103 with a history of attempted suicide) and preregistered the hypotheses and code of our analyses. We tested the hypotheses that daily loneliness would be associated with same- a

Loneliness is a highly prevalent experience in schizophrenia. Theoretical models developed in the general population propose that loneliness is tantamount to a feeling of being unsafe, is accompanied by enhanced environmental threat perception, and leads to poor physical, emotional, and cognitive functioning. Previous research has reported that loneliness is associated with poorer physical and emotional health in schizophrenia; however, few studies have directly compared loneliness and its correlates in persons with schizophrenia and non-psychiatric comparison subjects. The purpose of the curr

OBJECTIVE: To determine cross-sectional and prospective associations between loneliness and physical activity, and to evaluate the roles of social control and emotion regulation as mediators of these associations.
DESIGN: A population-based sample of 229 White, Black, and Hispanic men and women, age 50 to 68 years at study onset, were tested annually for each of 3 years.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Physical activity probability, and changes in physical activity probability over a 3-year period.
RESULTS: Replicating and extending prior cross-sectional research, loneliness was associated with a si

INTRODUCTION: Loneliness among older adults is a significant public health concern. There is a critical need to develop effective, tailored strategies to combat loneliness that accounts for the diverse nature of older adult populations, including those with unique life experiences, such as Veterans. In order to develop and implement these strategies and meet the specific needs of the diverse older population, the research field requires a comprehensive understanding of the various factors that contribute to loneliness across different subgroups of older adults, including Veterans and civilians

BACKGROUND: The increasing proportion of older adults in the population, along with changes in their occupational engagement, has made loneliness a growing concern across Europe. Due to the unclear relationship between work and loneliness, this study aimed to examine the association between occupational activity and loneliness among adults aged ≥60 years, considering factors that may influence this relationship.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted among 1090 respondents aged ≥60 years in September-November 2025 using computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI). Loneliness was asse

Can feelings of loneliness and depression be adaptive for adolescents? Yes, suggests the Evolutionary Theory of Loneliness: initially, loneliness activates depressive responses for self-preservation. In turn, these feelings prepare adolescents for reaffiliation, thereby reducing loneliness (H1a: short-term balancing feedback loop). If this fails, loneliness and depressive symptoms may become long-term traits that exacerbate each other over time (H1b: long-term reinforcing feedback loop). Therefore, the short-term balancing feedback loop between loneliness and depressive symptoms may buffer aga

PURPOSE: People with vision impairment have lower mental wellbeing than those without eye disease. Loneliness is thought to be associated with lower wellbeing in this population, but the confounding effect of mental ill-health and other factors which affect wellbeing has not been addressed. This study explored associations between loneliness and wellbeing in people with inherited macular disease, controlling for mental ill-health, demographic and clinical factors.
METHODS: Thirty-six people with inherited macular disease were recruited. Age, visual acuity, duration of disease and socioeconomi

Loneliness, defined as unmet needs for intimate relationships (emotional loneliness) or larger social connections (social loneliness), is a risk factor for internalizing disorders common among people with HIV (PWH). While loneliness is associated with facial emotion perception (FEP)-the ability to recognize others' emotional expressions-research has focused on healthier, younger populations, limiting its generalizability to PWH. Further, the extent to which emotional and social loneliness is associated with FEP has not been examined. As such, this study assessed the relationship between loneli

University students remain vulnerable to the experience of loneliness and comorbid psychiatric difficulties, as evidenced in countries worldwide. In the present study, we examined the prevalence of loneliness among UK university students whilst assessing the association between multiple psychiatric risk factors. Here, N = 1408 students completed eight validated measures: Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale; Patient Health Questionnaire; The Mood Disorder Questionnaire; The Sleep Condition Indicator; The Perceived Stress Scale; Suicidal Behaviours Questionnaire-Revised; The Prodromal Questionnai

Cognitive discrepancy theory defines loneliness as the experienced discrepancy between the desired or needed (quality of) relationships and the achieved ones. This assumes that people have relationship expectations that need to be met in order to avoid loneliness. This study examines quantitative and qualitative relationship expectations of older adults, for which the 'social relationships expectations framework' by Akhter-Kahn et al.1 serves as an important starting point. Semi-structured interviews about loneliness and relationship expectations were conducted among older adults (ages 62-93 y

BACKGROUND: While it is well-established that humans possess an innate need for social belonging, the neural mechanisms underlying motivation for connection are still largely unknown. We propose that inclusion motivation - measured through the effort that individuals are willing to invest to be included in social interactions - may serve as one of the basic building blocks of social behavior and may change in lonely individuals.
METHODS: Following the screening of 303 participants, we scanned 30 low- and 28 high-loneliness individuals with functional magnetic resonance imaging while they perf

BACKGROUND: This study investigated how individual differences in schizotypy differentially predicted types of loneliness - direct, social, emotional, and existential loneliness (in relationships and meaninglessness in life).
METHODS: We presented participants with the brief version of the Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences and the de Jong Giervald loneliness scale and used dominance analysis to evaluate the dominant predictors of schizotypy on loneliness. We also evaluated the impact of depression on each model.
RESULTS: In our preregistered analysis we found evidence to

INTRODUCTION: Young adulthood is a transitional period where adults are faced with new social and psychological roles. So, in order to matter and to form relationship with others, they become vulnerable to set exaggerated high standards for themselves and others, which can eventually lead them to experience loneliness.
OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to determine the relationship of perfectionism, mattering with loneliness in young adults of Gen-Z after controlling for covariates. It was also aimed to find out gender differences on perfectionism, mattering and loneliness in young adults.

OBJECTIVE: Loneliness is prevalent in people with HIV (PWH) and associated with adverse health-related consequences, including depression. Chronic inflammation has been linked to depression in PWH, though its association with loneliness is less well established. Simultaneous examination of inflammation, loneliness and depression is needed to clarify these relationships. This study investigated the relationship between loneliness and inflammation, and the effects of loneliness and inflammation on depression in PWH.
METHODS: 82 PWH who were on suppressive ART (mean age [SD] = 53.2 [9.0]) comple

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study is to examine the prevalence of loneliness in Europe in 2016 and during the first months - April-July 2020 - of the COVID-19 pandemic, and to assess whether the risk factors associated with loneliness have changed after the outbreak of the pandemic.
METHOD: The analysis is based on two cross-country surveys, namely the 2016 European Quality of Life Survey and the 2020 Living, Working and COVID-19 Online Survey.
RESULTS: The COVID-19 pandemic has magnified already worrying levels of loneliness in Europe. Young adults have been the most severely hit by socia

Solo agers may be vulnerable to social isolation and mental health sequelae, particularly if they lack close family or friendship ties. This study examined associations among indicators of solo aging, frequency of loneliness, and Major Depressive Disorder among adults aged 60+. Depressed participants were diagnosed by a geriatric psychiatrist and control participants were not depressed. We hypothesized that older adults with more indicators of solo aging (i.e., living alone, being unmarried, not having family or friends nearby) would be more often lonely and more likely to be depressed. BACKGROUND: Connectedness and attachment are vital parts of humanity. Loneliness, a state of distress in reaction to perceived detachment and isolation, is reported by over one-third of U.S. adults and is associated with numerous physical and mental health consequences. What contributes to loneliness, especially in women and minority populations, is poorly understood, but this population is also at greater risk for abuse and trauma. Our study aimed to further understand loneliness in urban midlife women and to explore the relationship that may exist with trauma(s).
METHODS: To identify primac
