Real-time computer-aided diagnosis of focal pancreatic masses from endoscopic ultrasound imaging based on a hybrid convolutional and long short-term memory neural network model.

Differential diagnosis of focal pancreatic masses is based on endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) guided fine needle aspiration biopsy (EUS-FNA/FNB). Several imaging techniques (i.e. gray-scale, color Doppler, contrast-enhancement and elastography) are used for differential diagnosis. However, diagnosis remains highly operator dependent. To address this problem, machine learning algorithms (MLA) can generate an automatic computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) by analyzing a large number of clinical images in real-time. We aimed to develop a MLA to characterize focal pancreatic masses during the EUS procedure.

The anterior retrosplenial cortex is required for short-term object in place recognition memory retrieval: Role of ionotropic glutamate receptors in male and female Long-Evans rats.

The anterior retrosplenial cortex (aRSC) integrates multimodal sensory information into cohesive associative recognition memories. Little is known about how information is integrated during different learning phases (i.e., encoding and retrieval). Additionally, sex differences are observed in performance of some visuospatial memory tasks; however, inconsistent findings warrant more research. We conducted three experiments using the 1-h delay object-in-place (1-h OiP) test to assess recognition memory retrieval in male and female Long-Evans rats. (i) We found both sexes performed equally in thr

A single injection of pregabalin induces short- and long-term beneficial effects on fear memory and anxiety-like behavior in rats with experimental type-1 diabetes mellitus.

Anxiety Disorders and Posttraumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD) associated with type-1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) are increasingly common comorbidities and the treatment is quite challenging. In that sense, evidence indicates that the anticonvulsant pregabalin is highly effective in treating severe cases of anxiety, as well as PTSD and diabetic neuropathic pain which is also very prevalent in T1DM. Herein, the short- and long-term effects of a single injection of pregabalin on the acquisition of a fear extinction memory and parameters of anxiety in induced-T1DM animals were investigated. For that, w

Gesture Recognition Based on a Convolutional Neural Network-Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Network for a Wearable Wrist Sensor with Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube/Cotton Fabric Material.

Flexible pressure sensors play a crucial role in detecting human motion and facilitating human-computer interaction. In this paper, a type of flexible pressure sensor unit with high sensitivity (2.242 kPa-1), fast response time (80 ms), and remarkable stability (1000 cycles) is proposed and fabricated by the multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/cotton fabric (CF) material based on a dip-coating method. Six flexible pressure sensor units are integrated into a flexible wristband and made into a wearable and portable wrist sensor with favorable stability. Then, seven wrist gestures (Gesture Group

Dysgraphia and Memory: Insights into the Cognitive Mechanisms, Neural Correlates, and Intervention Strategies.

Studies regarding dysgraphia, an impairment in writing, have been receiving more attention in recent research. Most studies have broadly discussed the multiple cognitive mechanisms involved in writing and its disruption leading to dysgraphia. However, little attention has been paid to the involvement of different memory systems integral to writing and its disruption in individuals with dysgraphia. Orthographic long-term memory and orthographic working memory are the two memory systems predominantly involved in the production of written expressions, and the subsequent interruption of these memo

Automated Vision-Based Sensing of Paediatric Pain Using 2D-Facial Landmark Trajectories Derived from 3D Geometric Normalisation and a Spatial-Temporal Attention Long Short-Term Memory (STA-LSTM) Network.

Background: Accurate pain assessment in children remains challenging because conventional behavioural assessment tools are subjective and provide only intermittent observations. This study evaluated a vision-based sensing system for automated paediatric pain detection using two-dimensional facial landmark trajectories derived from three-dimensional geometric normalisation of frontal facial video recordings. Methods: In a prospective observational study, 125 children aged 6-17 years undergoing elective surgery had frontal facial videos recorded pre- and postoperatively using a custom-developed

Linguistic Pattern-Infused Dual-Channel Bidirectional Long Short-term Memory With Attention for Dengue Case Summary Generation From the Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases-Mail Database: Algorithm Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Globalization and environmental changes have intensified the emergence or re-emergence of infectious diseases worldwide, such as outbreaks of dengue fever in Southeast Asia. Collaboration on region-wide infectious disease surveillance systems is therefore critical but difficult to achieve because of the different transparency levels of health information systems in different countries. Although the Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases (ProMED)-mail is the most comprehensive international expert-curated platform providing rich disease outbreak information on humans, animals, and

E-Commerce Network Search System Based on Target Webpage Positioning and Sentiment Analysis Recommendation.

With the rise of e-commerce network search systems, product search efficiency and user satisfaction have become increasingly important. To address the low accuracy of consumer sentiment analysis in existing product recommendation scenarios, a webpage localization and sentiment analysis recommendation model is proposed that combines an improved web search algorithm with a bidirectional long short-term memory network and an attention mechanism. An e-commerce network search system is then designed around this model. Experimental results show that the sentiment analysis recommendation model achiev

Pseudoword spelling ability predicts response to word spelling treatment in acquired dysgraphia.

Although rehabilitation of acquired dysgraphia can be quite effective, identifying predictors of responsiveness to treatment is useful for prognosis and individualization of treatment protocols. This study examined whether various features of treatment response were predicted by the integrity of one or more of the central cognitive components of spelling: orthographic long-term memory, orthographic working memory, and phoneme-grapheme conversion. Twenty dysgraphic individuals received 12 weeks of bi-weekly, individualized, lexically-based spelling rehabilitation using a spell-study-spell parad

Consolidation, reconsolidation, and extinction of contextual fear memory depend on de novo protein synthesis in the locus coeruleus.

Memory consolidation is the process underlying the stabilization of labile short-term memory and the generation of long-term memory for persistent memory storage. The retrieval of contextual fear memory induces two distinct and opposite memory processes: reconsolidation and extinction. Reconsolidation re-stabilizes retrieved memory for re-storage, whereas memory extinction weakens fear memory and generates a new inhibitory memory. Importantly, the requirement for new gene expression is a critical biochemical feature of the consolidation, reconsolidation, and long-term extinction of memory. The

Development of a bus real-time crash risk prediction framework by using a self-attention-based bidirectional long and short-term memory network with anomaly detection learning and mixed sequence features.

The accuracy of real-time crash risk prediction and the reasonableness of crash warning time are decisive factors in enabling bus drivers to perform effective crash avoidance maneuvers. However, existing research based on microscopic time-series data often suffers from insufficient crash samples and neglects the historical behavioral patterns of driving behavior. Meanwhile, the bus crash risk warning time needs to be further optimized and selected to satisfy the crash risk response time requirements for drivers. To address these issues, this study proposes a novel framework, a self-attention-b

Visual memory.

Visual memory allows us to behave adaptively in the world we live. In this tutorial we will review the types of visual memory storage that have been identified. These storage processes begin the instant a visual stimulus appears and continue through to remembering objects and scenes that were encountered decades ago. The different types of memory storage have different properties of capacity and resolution. We will discuss how our memories allow us to link new information to information that we have acquired across our life spans. We will also discuss how this linking between new information a

The medial temporal lobe supports the quality of visual short-term memory representation.

The quality of short-term memory (STM) underlies our ability to recall the exact details of a recent event, yet how the human brain enables this core cognitive function remains poorly understood. Here we use multiple experimental approaches to test the hypothesis that the quality of STM, such as its precision or fidelity, relies on the medial temporal lobe (MTL), a region commonly associated with the ability to distinguish similar information remembered in long-term memory. First, with intracranial recordings, we find that delay-period MTL activity retains item-specific STM content that is pre

Interactions of working and long-term memory: Evidence from Brown-Peterson and proactive interference effects.

How do working memory (WM) and episodic long-term memory (eLTM) interact to support immediate memory performance? Their contributions are often intertwined, reflecting a functional overlap that challenges clear-cut distinctions between the two systems. The present study investigates this interaction by assessing the combined effects of two diagnostic manipulations-proactive interference (PI) and secondary task effects (via Brown-Peterson-style filled retention intervals)-on binding tasks across varying set sizes. In Experiment 1, participants encoded word-object pairs and completed a four-alte

Influence of a combination of two tetrachlorobiphenyl congeners (PCB 47; PCB 77) on thyroid status, choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) activity, and short- and long-term memory in 30-day-old Sprague-Dawley rats.

The important role of thyroid hormones in growth and development, maintenance of body temperature, digestion, cardiac function, and normal brain development can be disrupted by environmental contaminants like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB). Polychlorinated biphenyls are environmental contaminants that are widespread, persistent, lipophilic, and bioaccumulate through food webs, concentrating in adipose tissue. Placental and lactational PCB exposure of offspring causes metabolic and endocrine disruptions including hypothyroxinemia, spatial learning and memory deficits, neurochemical and neurobe

Prefrontal working memory activity slots support sequence memory similar to hippocampal long-term memory position recall.

Prefrontal cortex and medial temporal lobe information processing might not be that different after all. In this issue of Neuron, Whittington et al.1 show that prefrontal cortex working memory slot activity enables sequence memorizing similar to hippocampal long-term memory. Here, this approach is outlined and its implications are discussed.

Diversity of clustered protocadherin-α genes in neuronal identity and its role in short-term specific associative memory formation.

Clustered protocadherins (cPcdh) are cell adhesion molecules with 58 isoforms, essential for neural circuit formation and higher cognitive functions. This study investigated the impact of reduced cPcdh-α diversity on cognitive function using mutant mice. Behavioral tests revealed that cPcdh-α1-12 mice exhibited specific memory impairments ranging from a few seconds to 2 h short-term memory, while memory from 24 h to 2 weeks long-term memory remained intact. Notably, no abnormalities in appearance or spontaneous behavior were observed in cPcdh-α1-12 mice, suggesting that the deficits were speci

A systematic review of the next-day effects of heavy alcohol consumption on cognitive performance.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Studies examining the next-day cognitive effects of heavy alcohol consumption have produced mixed findings, which may reflect inconsistencies in definitions of 'hangover'. Recent consensus has defined hangover as 'mental and physical symptoms, experienced the day after a single episode of heavy drinking, starting when blood alcohol concentration (BAC) approaches zero'. In light of this, we aimed to review the literature systematically to evaluate and estimate mean effect sizes of the next-day effects of heavy alcohol consumption on cognition. METHODS: Embase, PubMed and P

Effects of Multisession Prefrontal Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Long-term Memory and Working Memory in Older Adults.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive form of electrical brain stimulation popularly used to augment the effects of working memory (WM) training. Although success has been mixed, some studies report enhancements in WM performance persisting days, weeks, or even months that are actually more reminiscent of consolidation effects typically observed in the long-term memory (LTM) domain, rather than WM improvements per se. Although tDCS has been often reported to enhance both WM and LTM, these effects have never been directly compared within the same study. However, given

Associative-memory deficit as a function of age and stimuli serial position.

Studies have shown associative-memory decline in aging. While the literature is inconclusive regarding the source of the deficit, some researchers argue that it is caused by impaired encoding and maintenance processes in working-memory (WM). Successful retrieval of a stimulus depends on its sequential presentation in the learning list: stimuli at the beginning or the end of the learning list benefit from higher retrieval probability. These effects are known as "primacy" and "recency" effects, respectively. In the case of the primacy-effect, stimuli at early list positions benefit from extensiv
