Lotus corniculatus L. can spontaneously colonize metal-contaminated areas like the old Zn-Pb calamine tailings. This study compared two L. corniculatus ecotypes collected from metal-contaminated (HM) and non-contaminated (NM) sites to identify physiological adaptations to long-term metal exposure. The results indicated that HM ecotype accumulates Zn, Pb, and Cd in shoots without showing any toxic symptoms at the ultrastructural level. The HM ecotype exhibited a different composition of photosynthetic pigments, lower lipid peroxidation, and oxidative stress levels and increased the efficiency o

Lotus rhizome starch (LS) has limited application owing to its high digestibility and pronounced retrogradation tendency. To elucidate how hydrocolloid molecular architecture regulates LS functionality after gelatinization, fully gelatinized LS was blended with pre-hydrated xanthan gum (XG), flaxseed gum (FG), guar gum (GG), or carrageenan (CA). Multiscale structural and functional analyses, including microstructure, nanoscale morphology, rheology, and water distribution, were performed to evaluate the ability of hydrocolloids to spatially integrate with the gelatinized LS matrix and organize

INTRODUCTION: The lotus-fish co-culture ponds (LP) is a widely applied integrated aquaculture system in China. However, research on the micro-ecology of aquaculture in lotus ponds is still insufficient. This study explored the dynamic patterns of organic matter composition, as well as algal and bacterial community structures in LP and MP.
METHODS: A total of six independent ponds were used in this study: three lotus ponds designated as the lotus-fish co-culture ponds group (A1, A2, A3), and the other three conventional earthen ponds serving as the fish monoculture ponds group (B1, B2, B3). Ba

Reactive sulfur species (RSS) function as strong antioxidants and are involved in various biological responses in animals and bacteria. Few studies; however, have examined RSS in plants. In the present study, we clarified that RSS are involved in root nodule symbiosis in the model legume Lotus japonicus. Polysulfides, a type of RSS, were detected in the roots by using a sulfane sulfur-specific fluorescent probe, SSP4. Supplying the sulfane sulfur donor Na2S3 to the roots increased the amounts of both polysulfides and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the roots and simultaneously decreased the amounts

Copper can be a soil contaminant at concentrations that are toxic to plants, particularly because of copper-induced oxidative stress. The legume-rhizobia partnership that allows for biological nitrogen fixation is sensitive to oxidative stress, and this study investigates if copper acts directly on the machinery of nitrogen fixation, or indirectly via toxicity to the entire plant. When Lotus japonicus inoculated with its rhizobial partner Mesorhizobium loti was exposed to 300 or 450 µM of copper, biomass was reduced by 30-40% in the shoots, 40-55% in the roots, and 40-60% in the nodules relati

Halogenated carbazoles (HCZs) are prevalent in sediments, pose a risk of entering the human food chain via lotus roots. However, starch, protein, and fat in lotus root complicate determination of HCZs in this food. This study introduces a straightforward, sensitive, and rapid method for detecting four HCZs in lotus roots. The method employs a conical monolithic extraction column (MEC) containing chitosan-glutaraldehyde-graphene oxide aerogel (CS-GA-GOA) material. The CS-GA-GOA - MEC successfully achieved extraction of four HCZs in spiked lotus root samples in under 5 min. The method was rapid

Legumes establish mutualistic symbiosis with nitrogen (N)-fixing bacteria, which allows them to utilise atmospheric N2. Because the maintenance of symbiosis requires abundant carbon (C) sources, legumes regulate the balance between carbon consumption and nitrogen acquisition by systemically controlling the nodule number through CLAVATA1 (CLV1)-like receptors. In Lotus japonicus, the CLV1-like receptor HYPERNODULATION ABERRANT ROOT FORMATION1 (HAR1) acts in shoots to regulate root nodulation and contributes to symbiotic C/N coordination. This raises the possibility that HAR1 may also influence

INTRODUCTION: Hybridization is a key evolutionary force that enriches genetic diversity and is associated with metabolic innovation. Lotus (Nelumbo), comprising Asian lotus (N. nucifera) and American lotus (N. lutea), is both a culturally important ornamental and medicinal plant rich in benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (BIAs). However, the genomic and biochemical basis of BIA glycoside biosynthesis remains poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: A high-quality hybrid lotus genome was presented to dissect the formation of benzylisoquinoline alkaloid glycosides and the mechanism underlying their synthesis.

Nogo receptor-1 (NgR1) signaling is involved in the limitation of axonal regeneration following spinal cord injury (SCI) through collapsing the growth cone and inhibiting neurite outgrowth. Lateral olfactory tract usher substance (LOTUS), a NgR antagonist, suppresses these pathological conditions. A previous report demonstrated the positive effects of LOTUS expression on motor function through raphespinal tract regeneration using pan-neuronally LOTUS-overexpressing transgenic mice. However, this report used a hemi-section model, which does not represent the majority of clinical SCI cases, and

The adsorption of gaseous HCHO by raw lotus shell biochar carbonized at 500, 700, and 900 °C from the perspective of its internal crystal structure and surface functional groups was investigated by an integrated approach of experiments and density functional theory calculations. The results showed that lotus shell biochar carbonized at 700 °C had the best adsorption effect at a HCHO concentration of 10.50 ± 0.30 mg/m3, with an adsorption removal rate of 87.64%. The HCHO removal efficiency by lotus shell biochar carbonized at 500 and 900 °C was determined to be 80.96 and 83.07%, respectively. T

The structural evolution of lotus starch (LS)-chlorogenic acid (CA) complexes was investigated after microwave-heating treatment, to reveal the relationship between the interactions of lotus starch and chlorogenic acid molecules, and the digestive properties of the starch, after microwave gelatinization. During the early stage of microwave gelatinization (65, 70 °C), CA was mainly participating in the rearrangement of starch molecules in a weakly-bound form, and at that stage, the LS-CA complex acted as an inhibitor of digestion, under small intestine conditions, mainly through the release of

Percutaneous placement of transcatheter heart valves for treatment of degenerated surgical valves in the aortic and mitral position is an emerging therapy for selected high-risk patients. Here we describe in detail the first case in the literature of a patient (female, 72 years old, log EuroSCORE 22.9%) with a degenerated biological mitral prosthesis which was successfully treated by transapical implantation of a Lotus valve. The case described demonstrates the very controlled feasibility of valve-in-valve treatment for a degenerated mitral bioprosthesis with a mechanically expanding Lotus val

Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is a chronic condition characterized by damage to the intestinal mucosal barrier, resulting in bleeding, increased oxidative stress, persistent inflammation, and immune dysregulation. Lotus Leaf (LL), recognized for its dual role as both food and medicine, has demonstrated significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Furthermore, its calcined derivative, Lotus Leaf Charcoal (LLC), enhances its astringent, hemostatic, and antidiarrheal effects, positioning it as a promising candidate for the management of UC in both dietary and medicinal contexts. This study
