Dry eye is prevalent in many parts of the world. As a result, ophthalmologists and other health care professionals, such as optometrists and general practitioners, often help these patients manage their symptoms. The most common form of treatment for management of dry eye is over-the-counter tear lubricants. A number of tear lubricant formulations are available that vary by their mechanism of action. This article suggests simple guidelines on how lubricants can be selected for patients with mild to moderate dry eye. Side effects of lubricants, such as burning on instillation because of mismatc

INTRODUCTION: Dry eye disease (DED) is a chronic condition that can markedly impair visual function and quality of life. While tear substitutes remain the conventional first-line therapy, expanding knowledge of DED has opened the door to treatments designed to act on distinct pathogenic mechanisms.
AREAS COVERED: An extensive literature review using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted to evaluate both established and emerging therapies for DED. This review encompasses conventional tear substitutes and their properties, immune-modulating agents, blood derived products and other bi

BACKGROUND: The management of post-refractive surgery dry eye disease (DED) can be challenging in clinical practice, and patients usually show an incomplete response to traditional artificial tears, especially when it is complicated with ocular pain. Therefore, we aim to investigate the efficacy of combined topical 0.05% cyclosporine A and 0.1% sodium hyaluronate treatment in post-refractive surgery DED patients with ocular pain unresponsive to traditional artificial tears.
METHODS: We enrolled 30 patients with post-refractive surgery DED with ocular pain who were unresponsive to traditional

BACKGROUND: The global prevalence of dry eye disease (DED) ranged from 5% to 50%, accompanied by the yearly increasing trend and younger onset. To date artificial tear serves as a mainstay therapy for DED management. It is noteworthy that, acupuncture has been accepted for treating DED with a time-honored history in China. However, no systematic review has been updated till now, which is focusing on comparing acupuncture vs. artificial tears for DED management.
METHODS: Eight databases will be searched with the language restrictions of English and Chinese from their inception to July 1, 2020.

PURPOSE: Blinking is an involuntary movement essential for ocular surface health and visual comfort. While blinking exercises in patients with dry eye have been shown to improve symptoms, increase non-invasive tear film breakup time (NIBUT), and decrease incomplete blink rate (IBR), no studies have quantified improvements in eyelid opening. This study evaluated the effects of blinking exercises on palpebral fissure height (PFH), subjective symptoms, and tear film-related parameters.
METHODS: Participants were randomly assigned to a "blinking exercise group" that performed blinking exercises a

Several aspects of the quality of life (QoL) and treatment satisfaction of patients with dry eye disease (DED) may be underestimated. Ocular symptoms, which are assessed by validated patient-reported questionnaires and may include stinging, burning, itchiness, grittiness, dryness and discomfort, reduce QoL by affecting daily activities and work productivity. Self-reported symptoms do not always correlate with post-treatment improvements in clinical measures such as tear film break-up time, inflammation and osmolarity. Thus, treatments may improve clinical ocular features without improving symp

BACKGROUND: Sjögren´s syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune rheumatic disease that is characterised by decreased exocrine gland function and frequent ocular symptoms associated with eye dryness. Significantly, dry eyes can lead to corneal abrasions, infection, ulceration, chronic scarring and, in severe cases, perforation. The available conventional therapies have limited efficacy and there are no biologic therapies licensed for use in SS patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature search of PubMed (MEDLINE) and EMBASE electronic data bases was performed covering the period from January 1994 to Se

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are serious and rare diseases, most often drug-induced, and their incidence has been estimated at 6 cases/million/year in France. SJS and TEN belong to the same spectrum of disease known as epidermal necrolysis (EN). They are characterized by more or less extensive epidermal detachment, associated with mucous membrane involvement, and may be complicated during the acute phase by fatal multiorgan failure. SJS and TEN can lead to severe ophthalmologic sequelae. There are no recommendations for ocular management during the chroni

Custard apple seeds have been used in native medicine from time immemorial for the management of head lice and skin exfoliation. We report six consecutive patients who developed toxic keratoconjunctivitis within 6-12 h of ocular exposure to custard apple seeds. The use of topical steroid worsens the toxicity and predisposes to the development of microbial keratitis in such cases. Patients showed a good response to primary treatment with topical fortified antibiotics and lubricants. This case series highlights the need to educate the patients regarding the potential toxic effects of the custard
