Finding the clinical significance of facial swelling was of utmost importance in this case. Ludwig angina is a life-threatening cellulitis of the floor of the mouth that is mainly due to infectious causes. This particular patient had an atypical presentation except for the facial swelling in which the patient's non-specific symptoms made it difficult to obtain a diagnosis. Severe edema can make it difficult to intubate the patient; however, our case did not present with any common symptoms such as this. This is why it is of utmost importance to maintain dental/mouth hygiene and maintenance bec

Introduction Ludwig's angina is cellulitis of submandibular space, submental space, and sublingual space. The main causative factors include dental infections (dental caries with atypical periodontitis, pericoronitis, and dental procedures). Other predisposing conditions include poor dental hygiene, dental caries, malnutrition, diabetes mellitus, AIDS, and various other immunocompromised states. It presents as an acute onset and spreads very rapidly causing bilateral diffuse neck swelling, edema of floor of mouth, pain, fever, trismus, foul-smelling pus discharge, difficulty in swallowing, air

Neck mass is a common condition in primary care. The most common affected area is the cervical lymph node. The neck region is also prone infection as structurally the nodes and spaces are in close contact with the upper respiratory tract and the alimentary tract. Oral cavity is one of the most common route for harbouring infection. Poor oral hygeine and periapical dental problems are the main causes. Thus, it is important to perform a complete oral cavity examination even when trismus is present. Besides dental caries, floor of the mouth should be inspected for oedema that may impose threat to

Ludwig's Angina (LA) is an infection of the submandibular and sublingual spaces usually initiated by abscesses of the inferior molars due to mixed oral flora. Pharyngitis due to group A beta-hemolytic streptococci (GABHS) rarely results in bacteremia. A patient presented with the classical findings of LA, and had no odontogenic focus but had GABHS pharyngitis and bacteremia. Attempts to isolate other microbiological organisms from the submandibular and sublingual spaces were unsuccessful. The patient required emergent tracheostomy and was treated with penicillin G for 4 wk with complete resolu

This case report illuminates an instance of Ludwig's Angina in a 16-year-old male patient with concurrent Influenza A. Ludwig's Angina, a potentially fatal, rapidly spreading cellulitis, primarily affects the submandibular and sublingual spaces. This case emphasizes the importance of early detection, immediate intervention, and multidisciplinary management to prevent life-threatening complications. The patient presented with fever, sore throat, swelling under the tongue and submandibular region, and difficulty breathing following a family trip to Puerto Rico. Despite initial respiratory distre

Ludwig's angina is a deep neck space infection defined as a rapidly progressive bilateral cellulitis of the submandibular space. In spite of being an uncommon entity in developed countries and the reduction of mortality and morbidity due to modern era of antibiotics, improved imaging and airway management, it is still an important and potentially life-threatening condition. The authors present 3 cases of Ludwig's angina that occurred in a developed country, and that required admission in intensive care unit and extensive surgical and medical treatment.

A case is reported of a 38-year-old man presenting with early Ludwig's angina. It is difficult to differentiate superficial from deep infections of the face and neck by physical examination alone. The diagnosis of this condition with bedside soft tissue ultrasound of the face is described. Ludwig's angina is an uncommon infection of the deep tissues of the face and neck that usually evolves from more superficial infections such as dental abscesses.

Ludwig's angina (LA) is a rapidly progressing cellulitis that develops after oral infections or molar extractions, typically causing fever and chills and rarely progressing to trismus and cyanosis. It is associated with risk factors including diabetes mellitus, heavy alcohol use, oral malignancy, poor dentition or an immunocompromised state. This case report reviews a previously healthy patient with no appreciable risk factors presenting with LA following a third molar extraction, complicated by extensive anterior deep neck space abscesses, cavernous venous thrombosis and Lemierre's Syndrome.

We diagnosed and treated a case of Ludwig's angina in a 45-year-old man who had edema of the floor of mouth and the tongue along with bilateral submandibular sialadenitis and sialolithiasis. We secured the patient's airway via nasal fiberoptic intubation in the surgical intensive care unit and administered intravenous antibiotics. The edema subsided, and the patient was extubated on the third postoperative day and discharged shortly thereafter. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a patient with bilateral submandibular sialadenitis and sialolithiasis presenting as Ludwig's angi

PURPOSES: To determine if the empirical use of aminoglycosides is justified in Ludwig's angina based on microscopy, culture and sensitivity results.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was done on patients that presented with Ludwig's angina to the Maxillofacial and Oral surgery department at the University of Pretoria. Demographical data was extracted from patient files. Pus specimens that were submitted as part of the initial surgical intervention were analysed.
RESULTS: Sixty-three patients were included in the study with the majority, 76.19% (n=48/63), comprising males. The mean patient ag

The mylohyoid (MH) musculature separates the sublingual and submandibular spaces and is, therefore, important with regard to the spread of infection and space occupying lesions. Moreover, the MH may be elevated and included in the myocutaneous submental island flap or sutured in conjunction with the platysmas and the anterior bellies of the digastric muscles (ABDMs) to add stability to submental muscular medialization procedures. Therefore, variation in the anatomy of the MH musculature must be considered in the management of the spread of infection and space occupying lesions as well as in su

The Ludwig angina is an infection of the base of the mouth and submandibular region, frecuently after a dental extraction or a piece in bad state. When it surpassees the milohioid muscle it extends dissecting the superficial aponeurotic planes, and can evolve to a necrotisant fascitis. We present the case of a 67 years old man with a painful tumefaction of the mouth base and submandibular region. The CT reflected an heterogenous submaxilar lesion that extended by the deep cervical fascia introducing itself in the thorax. Under antibiotic treatment the pus was drained by cervicotomy, with daily

Ludwig's angina (LA) is a rapidly progressive deep neck space infection that can become life-threatening due to airway compromise. Agranulocytosis, defined as a severe depletion of neutrophils, typically predisposes patients to overwhelming infections; however, its coexistence with LA is rare and poorly characterized. Here, we present two cases of patients with no classical predisposing factors who developed LA in the setting of agranulocytosis, each highlighting distinct clinical challenges in diagnosis and therapeutic decision-making. Both patients responded well to the timely initiation of

INTRODUCTION: Ludwig's angina (LA) is a life-threatening infection that can affect the floor of the mouth and neck, potentially causing serious airway obstruction. In such cases, rescue airway management and oxygenation can be challenging due to swelling of the mouth floor, trismus, and limited mouth opening. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of the Trachway video-stylet (VS) and Pentax AWS hyperangulated videolaryngoscope with channel (HAVL-C) compared to the standard geometric video-laryngoscope (SGVL, Macintosh 3, Trachway) in simulating Ludwig's angina with cadavers.

Ludwig's angina is defined as a potentially lethal, rapidly spreading cellulitis, involving the sublingual and submandibular spaces, and is manifested by a brawny suprahyoid induration, tender swelling in the floor of the mouth, and elevation and posterior displacement of the tongue. During a life-threatening infection such as Ludwig's angina, the mother and foetus are vulnerable to septicemia and asphyxia. We describe a case of decompression of Ludwig's angina in a 28 weeks pregnant patient under bilateral superficial cervical plexus block. The block, coupled with bilateral mandibular nerve b

BACKGROUND: Deep neck infections are potentially life-threatening conditions because of airway compromise. Management requires early recognition, antibiotics, surgical drainage, and effective airway control. The Surgical Education and Self-Assessment Program 12 states that awake tracheostomy is the treatment of choice for these patients.
HYPOTHESIS: With advanced airway control techniques such as retrograde intubation, GlideScope, and fiberoptic intubation, surgical airway is not required.
DESIGN: A retrospective analysis of all deep neck abscesses treated from December 1999 to July 2006 was
