Brain abscess mimicking lung cancer metastases; a case report.

A 76-year-old woman came to us because of staggering, fever, dysarthria, and appetite loss. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain revealed multiple masses with surrounding edema. Chest X-ray and computed tomography demonstrated a mass-like lesion in the left lung and left pleural effusion. Lung cancer and multiple brain metastases were suspected. However, the brain lesions demonstrated a high intensity through diffusion-weighted MRI. The finding was an important key to differentiate brain abscesses from lung cancer metastases.

Pediatric lung abscess: a retrospective review of 23 cases.

Pulmonary abscess is a rare but critical problem in childhood. We did a retrospective review of 23 children with documented lung abscess who had been admitted and treated at the Taipei Veterans General Hospital over a 20-year period from April 1982 to April 2002. Among the 23 children, 11 cases were primary lung abscess, and 12 were secondary lung abscess. The pathogens were isolated in 16 patients (69.6%), and blood cultures yielded in only 3 patients (13.0%). The most common microorganism isolated in this series was Streptococcus pneumoniae. The 2 patients (8.7%) that died in our series had

[Exogenous lipoid pneumonia with abscess mimicking a lung tumor].

A case of abscessing exogenous lipoid pneumonia is reported. After the onset of respiratory symptoms, 68-year-old male was admitted to our hospital. Physical and X-ray examination suggested malignant lung tumor. After false positive finding of fine needle transthoracic biopsy, the right middle lobectomy was performed. Histological examination showed an unexpected finding of lipoid pneumonia and thereafter information of accidental petroleum aspiration was obtained.

[Clinical manifestations and therapeutic tactics in acute lung abscess].

Under analysis were data of 107 patients with acute pulmonary abscesses. Such patients need a complex intensive conservative therapy. Indications for surgical treatment of acute pulmonary abscesses were considered to be concomitant complications (hemorrhage, pyopneumothorax, empyema of the pleura), atypical forms badly differentiated from a cavitary form of carcinoma, as well as suppurative processes not treated conservatively and disposed to turn into a chronic stage.

Choriocarcinoma Masquerading as Lung Abscess or Lung Cancer: A Case with Atypical Imaging Findings.

BACKGROUND: Choriocarcinoma is a highly malignant trophoblastic tumor. However, the awareness surrounding its atypical clinical presentation is insufficient. The presence of a solitary lung lesion without uterine lesions often leads to misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis, which in turn causes delayed treatment or even multiple metastases throughout the body. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 36-year-old female patient who was misdiagnosed with a lung abscess and received suboptimal anti-infective treatment. She then underwent left upper lobectomy and was misdiagnosed with lung cancer b

Lung abscess mimicking lung cancer developed around staples in a patient with permanent tracheostoma.

A 68-year-old male with a tracheostoma due to hypopharyngeal cancer was admitted because his chest computed tomography (CT) showed a small nodule in the right middle lobe. Following a partial resection of the right middle lobe, histopathological diagnosis of the resected sample was that of organizing pneumonia. Eleven months later, chest CT showed a mass with pleural indentation and spiculation in the right middle lobe. 18-Fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography showed significant accumulation in the middle lobe tumor mass shadow. The abnormal chest shadow that had developed around sur

[Lung abscess which needed to be distinguished from lung cancer; report of a case].

BACKGROUND: Differential diagnosis of lung abscess from lung cancer is sometimes difficult. CASE: In February 2009, a 57-year-old man consulted our hospital complaining of bloody sputum. Chest computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a 2.5 cm nodule with pleural indentation, spicula and vascular involvement in the right S(3). Bronchofiberscope could not establish a definitive diagnosis. Blood test showed no abnormality. Three months later, progression of the nodule to the adjacent middle lobe was demonstrated by follow-up CT, and F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) sho

[Cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lung revealed in a newborn infant by an image of a lung abscess].

BACKGROUND: Cystic adenomatoid malformation, a rare pulmonary malformation, usually appears as a cystic mass, radiologically. It may be infected and confusion has also arisen in distinguishing it from pneumonia with pneumatoceles. CASE REPORTS: A full-term boy suffered from severe neonatal respiratory distress. Pregnancy had been uneventful despite the fact that his mother had insulin-dependent diabetes. Prenatal ultrasonographies did not reveal any abnormality. On day 2, X-rays showed a right pulmonary mass that appeared solid. The patient was treated for E Coli sepsis. Subsequently, the pul

A Rare Case of Salmonella Lung Abscess in an Immunocompromised Patient.

Salmonella enteritidis (S. enteritidis) is a Gram-negative, acid-labile bacterium responsible for major foodborne outbreaks in both developing and developed countries. While Salmonella species are often linked with gastrointestinal illness, pulmonary involvement is rare. We report a case of a Salmonella lung abscess occurring in the setting of Salmonella septicemia, in an immunocompromised patient with perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (p-ANCA)-associated microscopic polyangiitis (MPA) and clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). Initially admitted to Arrowhead Regional Medical

Thoracic ultrasonography in the diagnosis and follow-up of lung abscess.

Thoracic ultrasonography (TUS) is a long-established imaging modality with proven efficacy and reliability in the diagnosis of numerous pleuro-parenchymal diseases. Lung abscess (LA) is an infectious disease characterized by liquefactive necrosis and cavitation within the pulmonary parenchyma, typically occurring in immunosuppressed patients or those with various risk factors. Its treatment involves effective antibiotic therapy and, in rare cases, drainage or surgery. Obtaining a sample from the LA, when feasible, is crucial for initiating targeted therapy based on the pathogen identified in t

INVASIVE SALMONELLOSIS PRESENTING AS A LUNG ABSCESS: A CASE REPORT.

Salmonella spp are an uncommon cause of lung abscess. A 59 year old man presented to our hospital with a 1 month history of cough and low grade fever progressing to high grade fever for 1 week. He had a past medical history significant for diabetes mellitus type 2 and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis for which he was receiving prednisolone, initially at 60 mg daily tapering to 20 mg daily. On presentation he was febrile and had decreased breath sounds and dullness to percussion over the right lower lung field. A chest X-ray showed a cavitary lesion with an air-fluid level in the right lung.

Bronchoscopic Drainage of Lung Abscesses Using a Pigtail Catheter.

BACKGROUND: Lung abscesses are commonly treated with antibiotics. However, some patients fail to respond and may require percutaneous catheter drainage or surgical intervention. Bronchoscopic drainage (BD) of lung abscesses emerged as a therapeutic alternative in selected patients. OBJECTIVE: To describe our experience with 15 patients who underwent BD at our center during 2006-2016. METHODS: Patients underwent flexible bronchoscopy. Under fluoroscopic guidance, a pigtail catheter was introduced into the abscess cavity, its correct position being confirmed by the injection of contrast medium

Lung abscess in a child secondary to Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection.

We present a case of a lung abscess in a child 6-year-old admitted with a history of right hemithorax pain lasting for 15 days and the onset of mild fever in the last two days. Etiological research showed positivity of IgM antibodies to Mycoplasma pneumoniae after seven days of admission. The child has been successfully treated with antibiotic therapy, without the use of macrolides, for a duration of 4 weeks. Our study suggests that the Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection may predispose to severe infections, such as lung abscess, caused by typical respiratory pathogens. The reported case of lung a

Cervical conization complicated by sepsis with lung and liver abscesses.

BACKGROUND: Extrapelvic infections complicating cervical conization are exceedingly rare. CASE: Seven days after conization, a 44-year-old patient presented with fever and right upper quadrant pain. Pleural effusion and pulmonary and hepatic abscesses were detected. The pathology report of the conization showed microabscesses. Blood cultures grew Fusobacterium necrophorum. Intravenous antibiotics were administered. The pulmonary findings improved but did not completely resolve after drainage of pleural effusions. The patient refused further procedures and was discharged in good clinical condi

Lung abscess in adults with tetralogy of fallot and pulmonary atresia.

We describe 5 adults with tetralogy of Fallot and pulmonary atresia who developed lung abscesses, including some infected with atypical microbial pathogens, with important morbidity. We hypothesize that patients with such anatomy are at risk for chronic pulmonary infection due to hypo-perfusion of the pulmonary parenchyma. This previously unreported clinical association should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with tetralogy of Fallot and pulmonary atresia who alter their respiratory state.

Serratia marcescens lung abscess in a child with autoimmune neutropenia.

Though Serratia marcescens is widely known to be the cause of serious infections in immunocompromised hosts, a lung abscess caused by S. marcescens is very rare. A 5 year old boy who had previously been diagnosed with autoimmune neutropenia was admitted because of fever and cough. In spite of treatment with some antibiotics, he developed a lung abscess. Aspiration of the pleural fluid revealed that S. marcescens was the pathogen of the disease. In the present case, there were feasible risk factors for the development of Serratia lung abscess namely neutropenia, chronic gingivitis at the time,
