Primary malignant lymphoma arising in postmastectomy lymphedema. Another facet of the Stewart-Treves syndrome.

In rare cases, primary malignant lymphomas may arise in the soft tissues. Only one previous case has arisen in the context of chronic lymphedema. Because of the clinical appearance of such lesions, which resemble violaceous nodular or plaquelike tumors, they may be confused clinically with lymphedema-associated angiosarcomas occurring after radical mastectomy (Stewart-Treves syndrome). Furthermore, the histologic appearance of some lymphomas and angiosarcomas may also be similar. We studied two women with primary postmastectomy lymphedema-related malignant lymphoma in the soft tissues of the u

Cutaneous angiosarcoma in a super-morbidly obese patient (body mass index 106.7 kg/m2) highlighting diagnostic and therapeutic barriers in extreme obesity: a case report.

BACKGROUND: With the rising prevalence of extreme obesity, healthcare systems are increasingly confronted with patients who exceed the physical limits of standard diagnostic and therapeutic infrastructure. When body habitus exceeds the physical limitations of imaging and procedural infrastructure, timely cancer staging and intervention may become impossible, directly impacting survival. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 54-year-old White woman (weight ≈ 280 kg, BMI 106.7 kg/m2) with chronic stage IV lymphedema of both lower limbs who presented with a rapidly enlarging, violaceous, ulcerated plaq

68 Ga-FAPI-04 PET/CT: A "New Kid on the Block" for Evaluation of Stewart-Treves Syndrome.

A 40-year-old woman, who underwent modified radical mastectomy and chemoradiotherapy for triple-negative left breast cancer, presented with increasing lymphedema of the proximal left upper limb of 2 years' duration. She underwent 18 F-FDG PET/CT (FDG) and 68 Ga-FAPI-04 PET/CT (FAPI) scans, which showed subcutaneous deposits that were more FAPI-avid than FDG. These were diagnosed as Stewart-Treves syndrome (STS), which is a rare, highly aggressive angiosarcoma arising in chronic lymphedema. Better performance of FAPI vis-à-vis FDG scan may aid in early diagnosis and timely intervention in this

Secondary angiosarcoma: A fatal complication of chronic lymphedema.

Secondary Angiosarcoma (Stewart-Treves Syndrome) is a rare malignant cutaneous lesion, which arises in chronic lymphedema of the extremity, often observed after breast cancer treatment. We reviewed the history and the oncological outcome of two patients with this disease. Multimodal therapy including hyperthermic isolated limb perfusion with TNF-alpha and Melphalan, combined with radical resection of the affected skin and subcutaneous tissue including the fascia, with large safety margins may probably lead to better survival.

Pancreatic metastasis of angiosarcoma (Stewart-Treves syndrome) diagnosed using endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic involvement of angiosarcoma is extremely rare. METHODS: We herein report a rare case of angiosarcoma associated with chronic lymphedema (Stewart-Treves syndrome) with pancreatic metastasis that was diagnosed using endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)/fine needle aspiration (FNA). RESULTS: A 43-year-old woman with a history of radical hysterectomy with bilateral inguinal lymphadenectomy and chemoradiotherapy for cervical cancer 15 years prior noticed the presence of erythematous indurative plaques on her right femoral region, where chronic lymphedema had developed. Contrast-enha

Stewart-Treves syndrome following idiopathic leg lymphoedema: remember sarcoma.

Patients with skin complaints secondary to oedema are commonly encountered and can be a diagnostic challenge. Here, we present the case of a 78-year-old lady with Stewart-Treves syndrome, a rare cutaneous angiosarcoma. The histology showed angiocutaneous sarcoma with poorly defined margins. The prognosis remains extremely poor. A successful transfemoral amputation reduced the massive tumour burden and cleared a source of sepsis from this fungating tumour. Our aim is to highlight this rare but high-grade sarcoma which results from chronic lymphoedema. The red flag signs of sarcoma are masses gr

The post-thrombotic syndrome - a condition to prevent.

The incidence of the post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is increasing along with the incidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The overall frequency of PTS ranges from 20 percent to 50 percent of DVT patients; severe PTS, which includes leg ulcers, occurs in a quarter of cases. Because of its severity and chronicity, PTS is associated with great morbidity and cost. Its diagnosis is primarily based on the presence of typical symptoms and signs, but objective evidence of venous valvular reflux can help to confirm the diagnosis. Because therapeutic options for PTS are extremely limited and results are

Stewart Treves syndrome as a catastrophic sequela of chronic lymphedema: Clinical spectrum, management challenges, and outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Stewart Treves syndrome (STS) is a rare, aggressive lymphangiosarcoma arising in chronically lymphedematous tissue, most often after mastectomy with axillary lymph node dissection, and occasionally in lower limb lymphedema. We aimed to describe the clinical spectrum, diagnostic challenges, management, and outcomes of upper and lower limb STS, highlighting the importance of early recognition in improving survival. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of three patients diagnosed with STS between 2020 and 2025 at our tertiary vascular surgery center specializing in lymphedema.

Stewart-Treves syndrome: Magnetic resonance imaging data compared with pathological results from a single center.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data of patients with Stewart-Treves Syndrome (STS), and to compare them with the corresponding pathological data. A total of 4,289 cases of secondary upper limb lymphedema (LE) from a single center, including 5 female cases of STS who underwent modified-radical post mastectomy, were included in the study. All cases were diagnosed pathologically, and by conventional and contrast-enhanced (ce)MRI scans. A total of 43 tumor nodules (Φ ≥4 mm) were examined. According to the immunohistochemical results, the 5 cases o

Reoperation in the postoperative period of lung transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Lung transplantation (LTx) has been established as the last treatment option in certain lung diseases. It is not uncommon for complications to occur that require urgent reoperation. The objective of our study was to analyze the characteristics of lung transplant patients who required reoperation in the postoperative period. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We have conducted a retrospective descriptive study of 224 lung transplants from January 1999 to September 2008, excluding retransplants. A subgroup of 16 subjects (7.2%) required reoperations. RESULTS: These 16 individuals had a mean age

Kaposi sarcoma following postmastectomy lymphedema.

Classical Kaposi sarcoma (KS) usually appears on lower extremities accompanied or preceded by local lymphedema. However, the development in areas of chronic lymphedema of the arms following mastectomy, mimicking a Stewart-Treves syndrome, has rarely been described. We report an 81-year-old woman who developed multiple, erythematous to purple tumors, located on areas of post mastectomy lymphedema. Histopathological examination evidenced several dermal nodules formed by spindle-shaped cells that delimitated slit-like vascular spaces with some red cell extravasation. Immunohistochemically, the hu

Squamous cell carcinoma arising from congenital lymphedema.

Congenital lymphedema is a rare type of primary lymphedema occurring at birth or developing shortly later. Primary lymphedema can be classified according to whether it is familial or sporadic. The primary congenital familial lymphedema is also known as Milroy's disease. Majority of primary cases are sporadic type. Chronic lymphedema can be secondary to infections, surgery with lymph node excision, trauma, lymphadenectomy, radiotherapy, filarial infection, and so on. It is recognized that a variety of malignant tumors can arise in chronic congenital or acquired lymphedema; the most documented a

Stewart-Treves syndrome: a case report.

We present a case of chronic lymphoedema that progressed to Stewart-Treves syndrome in a 63-year-old woman with a previous modified radical mastectomy, associated lymph node dissection, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. While producing stabilisation of most cutaneous lesions initially, chemotherapeutic treatment of the angiosarcoma did not prevent subsequent metastasis and patient death. We urge vigilance and regular follow-up appointments for patients following a mastectomy with chronic lymphoedema to facilitate prevention or early treatment of this devastating syndrome.

[Angiosarcoma in chronic lymphoedema: a case of Stewart-Treves syndrome].

The Stewart-Treves Syndrome is defined as an angiosarcoma (very aggressive malignant tumor originating from endothelial cells) appearing in a specific clinical setting. This tumor develops in patients suffering from chronic lymphedema of the upper limb following mastectomy and axillary lymph node dissection for breast cancer. The diagnosis relies on medical history, clinical examination and a histological assesment (biopsy or resection). This syndrome represents a rare clinical entity. Unfortunately, the prognosis is poor. A large surgical resection is the treatment of choice if the patient is
