Experimental infection of Japanese macaques with simian retrovirus 5.

Recently, a large number of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) died of an unknown hemorrhagic syndrome at Kyoto University Primate Research Institute (KUPRI) and an external breeding facility for National Institute for Physiological Sciences (NIPS). We previously reported that the hemorrhagic syndrome of Japanese macaques at KUPRI was caused by infection with simian retrovirus 4 (SRV-4); however, the cause of similar diseases that occurred at the external breeding facility for NIPS was still unknown. In this study, we isolated SRV-5 from Japanese macaques exhibiting thrombocytopenia and then c

Multisynaptic inputs from the medial temporal lobe to V4 in macaques.

Retrograde transsynaptic transport of rabies virus was employed to undertake the top-down projections from the medial temporal lobe (MTL) to visual area V4 of the occipitotemporal visual pathway in Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata). On day 3 after rabies injections into V4, neuronal labeling was observed prominently in the temporal lobe areas that have direct connections with V4, including area TF of the parahippocampal cortex. Furthermore, conspicuous neuron labeling appeared disynaptically in area TH of the parahippocampal cortex, and areas 35 and 36 of the perirhinal cortex. The labeled neu

Effect of spatial frequency of stimulus on focal macular ERGs in monkeys : fmacERG dependence on the spatial-frequency.

PURPOSE: To determine the effect of the spatial frequency of a small grating stimulus centered on the macula on the focal macular ERGs (fmacERGs) of monkeys. METHODS: fmacERGs were recorded from eight eyes of four adult monkeys (Macaca fuscata). The spatial frequency of the stimulus was changed from 0.25 to 8 cycles/degree. The luminance of the light bars was 10 cd/m(2), and the contrast was 95%. The stimulus was flashed on and off with an on duration of 100 ms and an off duration of 150 ms (4 Hz). The stimulus was centered on the fovea and subtended 12.7 degrees at the cornea. The luminance

[Study of local shiftings of the brain stem in increased intracranial pressure by a supratentorial balloon].

The study of the mechanism of pressure transmission is important for the treatment of rapid deterioration of a patient's condition with increased intracranial pressure (ICP) from a space taking lesion in neurosurgical practice. The aim of this experiment is to clarify the mechanism of pressure transmission during supratentorial balloon inflation, by continuously monitoring local shiftings of the brain using strain gauge sensors. Mongrel dogs and macaca fuscatas were fixed in stereotaxic head frames with light anesthesia. Brain shiftings were evaluated by sensors discriminating two dimensional

Immunization with the pan-fungal vaccine, NXT-2a, reduces fungal burden following serial intravaginal challenges with C. albicans in a non-human primate model of experimental vulvovaginal candidiasis.

Worldwide, recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC) is estimated to affect approximately 138 million women annually. Current treatments for RVVC include azole therapies; however, these frequently fail to prevent recurrence and are limited by potential teratogenic effects and increasing azole resistance. Despite these limitations, there are no approved fungal vaccines. While rodent models have advanced our understanding of disease pathogenesis and vaccine development, their variable susceptibility to human pathogens and limited ability to recapitulate human immune responses restrict translatio

Computational fluid dynamics simulation wall model predicting air temperature of the nasal passage for nonhuman primates.

OBJECTIVES: Nasal passages adjust the temperature of inhaled air to reach the required body temperature for the lungs. The nasal regions of primates including humans are believed to have experienced anatomical modifications that are adaptive to effective conditioning of the atmospheric air in the habitat for a given species. Measurements of the nasal temperature are required to understand the air-conditioning performance for a given species. Unfortunately, repeated direct measurements within the nasal passage have been technically precluded in most nonhuman primates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Co

Quantity, distribution and phenotype of newly generated cells in the intact spinal cord of adult macaque monkeys.

The existence of proliferating cells in the intact spinal cord, their distribution and phenotype, are well studied in rodents. A limited number of studies also address the proliferation after spinal cord injury, in non-human primates. However, a detailed description of the quantity, distribution and phenotype of proliferating cells at different anatomical levels of the intact adult non-human primate spinal cord is lacking at present. In the present study, we analyzed normal spinal cord tissues from adult macaque monkeys (Macaca fuscata), infused with Bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU), and euthanize

Hindlimb proportions, allometry, and biomechanics in Old World monkeys (primates, Cercopithecidae).

The traditional focus on morphological rather than mechanical units has obscured some significant functional differences in the hindlimbs of primates. This paper examines the allometric and biomechanical basis for some distinctive proportional differences among pairs of morphological units in the hindlimb, and especially the foot, of cercopithecid primates. Five major conclusions are reached. First, many hindlimb dimensions scale allometrically with body mass to maintain mechanical similarity within taxonomic and locomotor groups. Therefore, the majority of traditional indices which describe t

[Effects of an anti-prostaglandin agent added to the irrigation solution on damage to the anterior segment in monkey eyes induced by pars plana vitrectomy].

Flurbiprofen is a water-soluble, non-steroid anti-inflammatory agent and is capable of marked inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. In a previous study by the authors, it was determined that the optimum concentration of flurbiprofen for intraocular irrigation solution in monkey retinas is 4 to 40 micrograms/ml. The present study was conducted to determine the optimum concentration of flurbiprofen for the irrigation solution, as well as to evaluate its toxic effects on the anterior segment tissues. In a pilot experiment, flurbiprofen was injected directly into the anterior chamber of pigmented

Highly homologous simian T-cell leukemia virus type 1 genome in Japanese macaques: a large cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Simian T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (STLV-1) is a retrovirus closely related to human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1), the causative agent of adult T-cell leukemia (ATL). It has been shown that Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata, JMs) are one of the main hosts of STLV-1 and that a high percentage of JMs (up to 60%) are infected with STLV-1; however, the molecular epidemiology of STLV-1 in JMs has not been examined. METHODS: In this study, we analyzed full-length STLV-1 genome sequences obtained from 5 independent troops including a total of 68 JMs. RESULTS: The overall nucle

Japanese macaque phonatory physiology.

Although the call repertoire and its communicative function are relatively well explored in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), little empirical data are available on the physics and the physiology of this species' vocal production mechanism. Here, a 6 year old female Japanese macaque was trained to phonate under an operant conditioning paradigm. The resulting 'coo' calls and spontaneously uttered 'growl' and 'chirp' calls were recorded with sound pressure level (SPL) calibrated microphones and electroglottography (EGG), a non-invasive method for assessing the dynamics of phonation. A total of

Different target-discrimination times can be followed by the same saccade-initiation timing in different stimulus conditions during visual searches.

The neuronal processes that underlie visual searches can be divided into two stages: target discrimination and saccade preparation/generation. This predicts that the length of time of the prediscrimination stage varies according to the search difficulty across different stimulus conditions, whereas the length of the latter postdiscrimination stage is stimulus invariant. However, recent studies have suggested that the length of the postdiscrimination interval changes with different stimulus conditions. To address whether and how the visual stimulus affects determination of the postdiscriminatio

Lymphatic drainage of the cerebrospinal fluid from monkey spinal meninges with special reference to the distribution of the epidural lymphatics.

The structural organization of the epidural lymphatics and lymphatic drainage of the cerebrospinal fluid from spinal meninges was studied in Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) by an enzyme-histochemical method. The spinal meninges were examined at various intervals from 1 to 48 h, as well as at 30 days, following an injection of ultrafine carbon particles into the subarachnoidal space (cisterna magna). Lymphatics were differentiated from blood capillaries by the 5'-nucleotidase (5'-Nase)-alkaline phosphatase (ALPase) double staining method (KATO et al. 1991, 1993) both in the whole-mount prepar

Enamel hypomineralization viewed from the pattern of progressive mineralization of human and monkey developing enamel.

Microradiograms and their computer-aided image analysis of ground sections of the developing enamel of human permanent third molars and monkey permanent teeth (Macaca fuscata) indicate that the mode of progressive mineralization of enamel is completely different between the matrix formation and maturation stages. During the former stage, the enamel matrix is slightly mineralized. During the latter stage, which takes a much longer period than the previous stage, the increase in the secondary mineralization takes place first slightly, from the surface toward the inner layer, and then heavily, fr

Adoption of 5- and 12-month-old infants by infantless, multiparous females in the Katsuyama free-ranging, provisioned group of Japanese macaques.

Adoption of motherless infants-when such orphans receive continuous care from other individuals-is a widespread, albeit infrequently observed behavior in mammals. Most reported macaque (Macaca) cases of adoption that include nursing involve a recently postpartum female (within a few weeks) adopting a recently orphaned infant less than a month old. However, in a free-ranging group of Japanese macaques (M. fuscata) we observed two infantless, multiparous females adopting a 5- and a 12-month-old infant who had lost their mother one and seven months earlier, respectively. Interactions between adop

Hormonal contraceptive affects heterosexual but not homosexual behavior in free-ranging female Japanese macaques over 17 mating seasons.

We assessed the effect of a progestin-based contraceptive treatment (chlormadinone acetate) on female heterosexual and homosexual behaviors in a free-ranging group of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) living at Arashiyama-Kyoto, Central Japan. The data included estimated intensity of fertility cues, sexual solicitations and mounting behaviors collected daily during 17 consecutive mating seasons (1995-2012) from 159 females. Females that were on contraception: (1) exhibited less intense cues of putative fertility and for shorter periods; (2) were solicited by fewer males, and those males that

Potential of Japanese Macaques for Understanding Etiology and Seasonality of Repetitive Linear Enamel Hypoplasia in Nonhuman Primates.

Japanese macaques are ideal to advance understanding of a wide-spread pattern of recurrent developmental distress in great apes, preserved as repetitive linear enamel hypoplasia (rLEH). Not only are they numerous, unendangered, and well-studied, but they are distributed from warm-temperate evergreen habitats in southern Japan to cool-temperate habitats in the north, where they are adapted behaviorally and phenotypically to winter cold and seasonal undernutrition. We provide a pilot study to determine if enamel hypoplasia exists in Japanese macaques from the north and, if temporal patterns of e

View-tuned and view-invariant face encoding in IT cortex is explained by selected natural image fragments.

Humans recognize individual faces regardless of variation in the facial view. The view-tuned face neurons in the inferior temporal (IT) cortex are regarded as the neural substrate for view-invariant face recognition. This study approximated visual features encoded by these neurons as combinations of local orientations and colors, originated from natural image fragments. The resultant features reproduced the preference of these neurons to particular facial views. We also found that faces of one identity were separable from the faces of other identities in a space where each axis represented one

Japanese macaque encephalomyelitis: a spontaneous multiple sclerosis-like disease in a nonhuman primate.

OBJECTIVE: To describe Japanese macaque encephalomyelitis (JME), a spontaneous inflammatory demyelinating disease occurring in the Oregon National Primate Research Center's (ONPRC) colony of Japanese macaques (JMs, Macaca fuscata). METHODS: JMs with neurologic impairment were removed from the colony, evaluated, and treated with supportive care. Animals were humanely euthanized and their central nervous systems (CNSs) were examined. RESULTS: ONPRC's JM colony was established in 1965 and no cases of JME occurred until 1986. Since 1986, 57 JMs spontaneously developed a disease characterized cli

Sexual reward via vulvar, perineal, and anal stimulation: a proximate mechanism for female homosexual mounting in Japanese macaques.

Female Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), in certain captive and free-ranging populations, frequently engage in same-sex mounting. Traditionally, same-sex mounting interactions in animals have been characterized as "sociosexual," that is, sexual in terms of their superficial form, but enacted to facilitate adaptive social goals. Sexual motivation is rarely ascribed to sociosexual interactions because their adaptive functions are often seen as their primary purpose, thus diminishing, or even negating, any sexual component that such activity might have. A substantial number of studies indicate
