Magnetic resonance spectroscopy in patients with Fabry and Gaucher disease.

OBJECTIVE: Fabry and Gaucher diseases are rare progressive inherited disorders of glycosphingolipid metabolism that affect multiple organ systems. The aim of this study was to investigate evidence for metabolic changes in the central nervous system involvement using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging. METHODS: Seven Fabry and eight Gaucher patients were included into this study. A two-dimensional, spectroscopic imaging method with an ultra-short echo-time of 11 ms was used at a 3T whole body magnet. Absolute metabolic values were retrieved using internal water scaling. Results we

The role of magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy in hepatic encephalopathy.

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a diverse manifestation of acute and chronic liver failure, ranging from cognitive impairment, only detectable on psychometric evaluation through to confusion, coma and death from cerebral oedema. While there is widespread acceptance of its importance, there is little consensus on how best to diagnose and monitor HE. Clinical descriptions, psychometric testing, electroencephalography and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (and lately, MR spectroscopy) have all been proposed. MR techniques, in contrast to other modalities, have the benefit of objectivity and of being

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the thalamus in essential tremor patients.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although essential tremor (ET) is one of the most common movement disorders, its pathogenesis remains obscure. The ventral intermediate nucleus of the thalamus (VIM nucleus) is suggested to play an important role in the occurrence of disease. In this study, the authors investigated the presence of biochemical or metabolic alterations in the thalamus of patients with ET using magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy. METHODS: The study group included 14 patients with ET who suffered from tremor predominantly in their right arm and 9 healthy controls. All patients and contro

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy and analysis of MECP2 in Rett syndrome.

We studied the in vivo cerebral metabolites and documented the presence of MECP2 gene mutations in six Chinese females with Rett syndrome. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy spectra from the frontal lobe (gray and white matter) and deep gray nuclei (basal ganglia and thalamus) of either side were obtained. N-acetylaspartate/total creatine, choline/total creatine, and N-acetylaspartate/choline ratios were analyzed and compared with six healthy age-matched female control subjects. MECP2 gene mutation was identified in four patients; one patient had polymorphism and one patient did not have gene mut

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy outcomes from a comprehensive magnetic resonance study of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Magnetic resonance (MR) technology offers noninvasive methods for in vivo assessment of neuroabnormalities. A comprehensive neuropsychological/behavioral, MR imaging (MRI), MR spectroscopy (MRS) and functional MRI (fMRI) assessment was administered to children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) to determine whether global and/or focal abnormalities could be identified and to distinguish diagnostic subclassifications across the spectrum. The four study groups included (1) FAS/partial FAS; (2) static encephalopathy/alcohol exposed (SE/AE); (3) neurobehavioral disorder/alcohol exposed (

Carbon monoxide brain toxicity: clinical, magnetic resonance imaging, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and neuropsychological effects in 9 people.

Carbon monoxide (CO) exposure is a common cause of toxic brain damage, whereby effects range from transient neurological dysfunction to coma and death. A spectrum of severity of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings after CO brain toxicity, including globus pallidus and white matter lesions, is well documented. Reports of MR spectroscopy (MRS) findings re main sparse. This article reports 9 people exposed to CO because of an apartment house's faulty gas heater. Four, with transient loss of consciousness after chronic moderate level CO exposure, suffered intellectual impairment without MRI

Magnetic resonance biomarkers in detection and characterisation of ovarian cancer: is magnetic resonance spectroscopy ready for clinical use?

Ovarian cancer is a major cause of cancer-related mortality in women, largely due to late-stage diagnosis and challenges in preoperative characterisation of adnexal masses. Multiparametric MRI, incorporating diffusion-weighted (DW) and dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) imaging, has improved lesion characterisation and led to the development of the Ovarian-Adnexal Reporting and Data System (O-RADS) MRI for standardised malignancy risk stratification. Despite its demonstrated clinical value, O-RADS MRI relies on qualitative assessment and lacks metabolic information. Magnetic resonance spectroscop

An unusual case of varicella zoster encephalitis mimicking a glioblastoma on magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

The authors report a case of varicella zoster encephalitis, mimicking a glioblastoma on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS). The limitations of MRI/MRS, may lead to delayed treatment with antiviral agents, which can result in increased morbidity and mortality. The possibility of viral encephalitis should remain in the differential diagnosis of all patients presenting with headaches and confusion, even when imaging results are indicative of a neoplastic process.

Repeatability of Dixon magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy for quantitative muscle fat assessments in the thigh.

BACKGROUND: Changes in muscle fat composition as for example observed in sarcopenia or muscular dystrophy affect physical performance and muscular function, like strength and power. The purpose of the present study is to measure the repeatability of Dixon magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for assessing muscle volume and fat in the thigh. Furthermore, repeatability of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) for assessing muscle fat is determined. METHODS: A prototype 6-point Dixon MRI method was used to measure muscle volume and muscle proton density fat fraction (PDFF) in the left thigh. PDFF wa

Evaluation of neurodegeneration in a mouse model of infantile batten disease by magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs) represent a group of common hereditary childhood neurodegenerative storage disorders that have no effective treatment. Mutations in eight different genes cause various forms of NCLs. Infantile NCL (INCL), the most lethal disease, is caused by inactivating mutations in the palmitoyl-protein thioesterase-1 (PPT1) gene. The availability of Ppt1-knockout (Ppt1-KO) mice, which recapitulate virtually all clinical and pathological features of INCL, provides an opportunity to test the effectiveness of novel therapeutic strategies in vivo. However, such studies wil

A longitudinal study of magnetic resonance spectroscopy Huntington's disease biomarkers.

Putaminal metabolites examined using cross-sectional magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) can distinguish pre-manifest and early Huntington's Disease (HD) individuals from controls. An ideal biomarker, however, will demonstrate longitudinal change over short durations. The objective here was to evaluate longitudinal in vivo brain metabolite profiles in HD over 24 months. Eighty-four participants (30 controls, 25 pre-manifest HD, 29 early HD) recruited as part of TRACK-HD were imaged at baseline, 12 months, and 24 months using 3T MRS of left putamen. Automated putaminal volume measurement was
