Six-Coordinated CoII Single-Molecule Magnets: Synthetic Strategy, Structure and Magnetic Properties.

The pursuit of molecule-based magnetic memory materials contributes significantly to high-density information storage research in the frame of the ongoing information technologies revolution. Remarkable progress has been achieved in both transition metal (TM) and lanthanide based single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Notably, six-coordinated CoII SMMs hold particular research significance owing to the economic and abundant nature of 3d TM ions compared to lanthanide ions, the substantial spin-orbit coupling of CoII ions, the potential for precise control over coordination geometry, and the air-stabi

3D digital analysis of tooth movement with magnets and elastics in vitro.

OBJECTIVES: Magnets have many advantages in orthodontics, and our previous studies confirmed their therapeutic potential through 3D-data analysis. The aim of this study was to compare tooth movements, including rotation, obtained via magnetic and elastic forces in crowded cases in vitro. METHODS: Typodont models mimicking a crowded case were prepared. In the magnetic force-driven orthodontics (MG) group, Nd-Fe-B magnets were attached to the labial surfaces from UR4 to UL4 for attracting force, and to UR6 and UL6 for repulsing force. For the elastic force-driven orthodontic (EL) group, bracket

Humidity-A Powerful Tool to Customize the Physical Properties of Molecular Magnets.

Since the dawn of the century, people have been fascinated by the mysterious force that draws two pieces of lodestone (magnetite, Fe3 O4 ) to each other as well as by property of stilbite (natural zeolite, NaCa4 [Si27 Al9 O72 ]⋅28 H2 O) to generate huge amounts of steam by rapidly heating the material. Nowadays, we know the first effect is addressed by magnetic attraction whereas the second one is related to the reversible sorption/desorption of water from humid air inside porous materials. For a long time, it was thought that these two, at first glance, were disjunctive properties that cannot

Hidden Zeeman Field in Odd-Parity Magnets: An Ideal Platform for Topological Superconductivity.

Odd-parity magnets (OPMs) have emerged as a fundamental class of unconventional magnetism, characterized by time-reversal-preserving nonrelativistic spin splitting (NSS). Despite growing interest, the fundamental understanding of OPMs remains critically incomplete, as previous studies have focused exclusively on NSS while overlooking the intrinsically broken time-reversal symmetry (T) inherent to magnetic order. In this Letter, we demonstrate that OPMs universally host a hidden Zeeman field rooted in this T breaking, which profoundly reshapes their band structure. Through an analytical study o

Density-matrix embedding based multi-reference perturbation theory approach to single-ion magnets.

Multi-configurational wave-function theory (MC-WFT) that combines the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) approach with subsequent state interaction treatment of spin-orbit coupling, abbreviated as CASSCF-SO, plays important roles in the microscopic understanding of single-ion magnets (SIMs) with different central transition metal or lanthanide ions and various coordination environments, but its application to SIMs with complex structures is severely limited due to its highly demanding computational cost. Density-matrix embedding theory (DMET) provides a systematic and mathema

Alternative treatment approach for anterior subgingival dental lesions: Forced eruption using attractive magnets.

This article reports the use of a minimally invasive technique to address a challenging clinical problem in the esthetic zone. The clinical steps taken to achieve forced eruption by 1.5-2.0 mm of a maxillary central incisor that presented minimal clinical crown because of caries are described in detail. This subsequently allowed the successful placement of a crown. The tooth was extruded by forces generated between 2 neodymium-iron-boron magnets. One was affixed to the palatal surface of the tooth, and the other was embedded in a thermoformed splint. Weekly circumferential supracrestal fiberot

High-Pressure Crystallography as a Guide in the Design of Single-Molecule Magnets.

Single-molecule magnet materials owe their function to the presence of significant magnetic anisotropy, which arises from the interplay between the ligand field and spin-orbit coupling, and this is responsible for setting up an energy barrier for magnetic relaxation. Therefore, chemical control of magnetic anisotropy is a central challenge in the quest to synthesize new molecular nanomagnets with improved properties. There have been several reports of design principles targeting such control; however, these principles rely on idealized geometries, which are rarely obtained in crystal structure

Metal-organic magnets with large coercivity and ordering temperatures up to 242°C.

Magnets derived from inorganic materials (e.g., oxides, rare-earth-based, and intermetallic compounds) are key components of modern technological applications. Despite considerable success in a broad range of applications, these inorganic magnets suffer several drawbacks, including energetically expensive fabrication, limited availability of certain constituent elements, high density, and poor scope for chemical tunability. A promising design strategy for next-generation magnets relies on the versatile coordination chemistry of abundant metal ions and inexpensive organic ligands. Following thi

Weak Ergodicity Breaking and Quantum Many-Body Scars in Spin-1 XY Magnets.

We study the spin-1 XY model on a hypercubic lattice in d dimensions and show that this well-known nonintegrable model hosts an extensive set of anomalous finite-energy-density eigenstates with remarkable properties. Namely, they exhibit subextensive entanglement entropy and spatiotemporal long-range order, both believed to be impossible in typical highly excited eigenstates of nonintegrable quantum many-body systems. While generic initial states are expected to thermalize, we show analytically that the eigenstates we construct lead to weak ergodicity breaking in the form of persistent oscilla

A new approach to the synthesis of heteronuclear propeller-like single molecule magnets.

Propeller-like [Fe(4)(L)(2)(dk)(6)] complexes, in which Hdk is a β-diketone and H(3)L is a tripodal alcohol, R-C(CH(2)OH)(3), exhibit tunable magnetic anisotropy barriers and retain their magnetic memory effect when chemically anchored on metal surfaces. Heteronuclear analogues of these M(4) complexes have been sought to afford a library of compounds with different total spin (S) values, but synthetic efforts described so far gave solid solutions containing M(4) in addition to the desired M(3)M' species. We now present a novel synthetic route to M(3)M' complexes featuring a central chromium(II

The effects of samarium-cobalt magnets and pulsed electromagnetic fields on tooth movement.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the application of either samarium cobalt magnets or pulsed electromagnetic fields could increase the rate and amount of orthodontic tooth movement observed in guinea pigs. In addition, the objective was to evaluate the effect of a magnetic field on bony physiology and metabolism and to monitor for possible systemic side effects. Fifteen grams of laterally directed orthodontic force were applied to move the maxillary central incisors of a sample of 18 young male Hartley guinea pigs divided into three groups: group 1, an orthodontic coil spring

[On the contribution of magnets in sequelae of facial paralysis. Preliminary clinical study].

This trial was designed to evaluate the efficacy of EPOREC 1 500 magnets as an adjuvant to rehabilitation following peripheral facial paralysis. Magnetotherapy is used in many other specialties, and in particular in rheumatology. The properties of repulsion between identical poles were used to decrease the effect of sequelae in the form of contractures on the facial muscles. There were two groups of 20 patients: one group with physiotherapy only and the other with standard rehabilitation together with the use of magnets. These 40 patients had facial paralysis of various origins (trauma, excisi

Identifying Strain Stacking Boundaries between Multiphase Domains in Atomically Thin Two-Dimensional Magnets.

Stacking engineering of van der Waals materials is an important strategy to control the materials' properties, such as electronic correlations, ferroelectricity, and layer-dependent two-dimensional magnetism. A timely testbed for the study of the latter is atomically thin chromium trihalides (CrX3, X = Cl, Br, I). Notably, by understanding the sliding mechanism between different stacking sequences, control of the stacking arrangement, and thus magnetic properties in CrX3, can be achieved. Such insight, however, is currently lacking. Here, advanced electron microscopy methods are used to identi

Electronic structure of mononuclear and radical-bridged dinuclear cobalt(II) single-molecule magnets.

Metal-organic compounds that feature magnetic bistability have been proposed as bits for magnetic storage, but progress has been slow. Four-coordinate cobalt(II) complexes feature high inversion barriers of the magnetic moment, but they lack magnetic bistability. Developing radical-bridged polynuclear systems is a promising strategy to encounter this; however detailed investigations of such species are scarce. We report an air-stable radical-bridged dinuclear cobalt(II) complex, studied by a combination of magnetometry and spectroscopy. Fits of the data give D = -113 cm-1 for the zero-field sp

Pediatric ingestion of multiple ball magnets leading to intestinal perforation: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ingestion of foreign bodies is a relatively common cause of abdominal pain in the emergency department among pediatric patients. A less common but potentially life-threatening ingestion is that of magnets. PRESENTATION OF CASE: Here, we report the case of a 6-year-old female who ingested 7 ball magnets in a rural town in Brazil and presented with a 4-day history of abdominal pain. Surgical approach was necessary in this case. It consisted of midline laparotomy that revealed one small intestinal perforation of the antimesenteric aspect of the small bowel. The magne

Spin-Chirality-Driven Quantum Anomalous and Quantum Topological Hall Effects in Chiral Magnets.

The quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) is a highly researched topic in condensed matter physics due to its ability to enable dissipationless transport. Previous studies have mainly focused on the ferromagnetic QAHE, which arises from the combination of collinear ferromagnetism and two-dimensional (2D) Z2 topological insulator phases. In our study, we demonstrate the emergence of the spin-chirality-driven QAHE and the quantum topological Hall effect (QTHE) by sandwiching a 2D Z2 topological insulator between two chiral kagome antiferromagnetic single-layers synthesized experimentally. The QAH
