MRI-verified "asleep" deep brain stimulation in Malta through cross border collaboration: clinical outcome of the first five years.

INTRODUCTION: Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) requires a specialist multidisciplinary approach and lifelong follow-up. Patient access can be a challenge for small nation states. Malta is an island nation with a population of just under 450 000. The number of patients likely to benefit from DBS is around 5 to 10 per year. This study explores the outcome of a cross border collaboration between specialist services at Queen Square, London and a tertiary centre in Malta. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between 2011 and 2015, 35 patients underwent MRI-Guided and MRI-Verified DBS with 29 receiving bilateral subt

Assessing Demographic Characteristics, Microbiology, and Mortality Outcomes Associated With Vertebral Osteomyelitis: A National Single-Center Cohort Study in Malta.

Background Vertebral osteomyelitis (VO) is an uncommon but potentially debilitating spinal infection associated with delayed diagnosis, prolonged hospitalization, and significant morbidity. General international consensus indicates that the incidence of VO is increasing, which likely reflects an aging population and an increase in use of advanced imaging. This paper aims to describe the demographic characteristics, risk factors, microbiology, and short-term outcomes associated with VO in Malta. Methods We performed a retrospective single-centre cohort study of adult patients (>18 years old) di

Exploring hydrodynamic cavitation for citrus waste valorisation in Malta: from beverage enhancement to potato sprouting suppression and water remediation.

Introduction: The endorsement of circular economy, zero-waste, and sustainable development by the EU and UN has promoted non-thermal technologies in agro-food and health industries. While northern European countries rapidly integrate these technologies, their implementation in Mediterranean food-supply chains remains uncertain. Aims: We evaluated the usefulness of hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) for valorizing orange peel waste in the fresh orange juice supply chain of the Maltese Islands. Method: We assessed: a) the effectiveness of HC in extracting bioactive compounds from orange peels (Citrus

Changing risk factors for placental abruption: A case crossover study using routinely collected data from Finland, Malta and Aberdeen.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of changes in risk factors between the first two pregnancies on the occurrence of placental abruption (PA) in the same woman. METHODS: Routinely collected obstetric data from Aberdeen Maternity and Neonatal Databank, the Maltese National Obstetric Information System and the Finnish Medical Birth Register were aggregated. Records of the first two singleton pregnancies from women who had PA in one pregnancy but not the other, were identified from this pooled dataset. A case-crossover study design was used; cases were pregnancies with abruption and matched cont

Evaluating neonatal mortality in Malta compared with other EU countries: Exploring the influence of congenital anomalies and maternal risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Globally, 240,000 babies die in the neonatal period annually due to congenital anomalies (CA). Malta reports the highest neonatal mortality rate (NMR) among EU (European Union) Countries, constituting a public health concern. OBJECTIVES: This study describes the contribution of CA to NMR in Malta, investigating possible associations with known maternal risk factors of maternal age, nationality, and education. Additionally, it provides an update on the contribution of CA to neonatal deaths in Malta and other EU countries. METHODS: Anonymous data for births and neonatal deaths were

National Implementation of a Crisis Resolution Home Treatment (CRHT) Team in Malta: Insights From the First Two Years of Operation.

Crisis Resolution Home Treatment (CRHT) teams have become a widespread alternative to psychiatric hospitalisation. Despite their popularisation, Malta has only recently introduced a CRHT team. The aims of the current study were to investigate (i) patient characteristics, (ii) factors influencing patients' length of follow-up (LoFU) and (iii) predictors of clinical outcomes. Descriptive and quantitative non-identifiable data were collected and analysed for patients utilising the CRHT service within its first 2 years of operation (n = 643). One-way ANOVA tests investigated influencing factors fo

Designing a National Suicide Prevention Strategy (2026-2031): Insights from Malta's Whole-of-Government and Whole-of-Society Model.

BACKGROUND: Suicide remains a global public health concern, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to advocate for comprehensive national prevention strategies. Despite a historically low suicide mortality rate, Malta has experienced rising mental health challenges linked to rapid socioeconomic transformation. This paper analyses the development of Malta's inaugural National Suicide Prevention Strategy (NSPS) 2026-2031, which utilises an integrated whole-of-government and whole-of-society model. REFORM CONTENT: The strategy is built upon a six-pillar implementation framework: (1) Coord

Sexually transmitted infections' epidemiology and knowledge, attitude and practice survey in a set of migrants attending the sexual health clinic in Malta.

BACKGROUND: The number of international migrants is estimated at 272 million people worldwide. In Europe, migrants face the disproportionate burden of infectious diseases, including hepatitis B and C, HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). High-risk behaviours, sexual abuse, poor living conditions and barriers to accessing health care may affect migrants' sexual health, leading to infections. OBJECTIVES: The study evaluates STIs and HIV prevalence and knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) in non-European migrants attending the sexual health clinic in Malta. It also seeks to explore

Does interpregnancy BMI change affect the risk of complications in the second pregnancy? Analysis of pooled data from Aberdeen, Finland and Malta.

OBJECTIVE: Weight management interventions during pregnancy have had limited success in reducing the risk of pregnancy complications. Focus has now shifted to pre-pregnancy counselling to optimise body weight before subsequent conception. We aimed to assess the effect of interpregnancy body mass index (BMI) change on the risk of perinatal complications in the second pregnancy. METHODS: A cohort study was performed using pooled maternity data from Aberdeen, Finland and Malta. Women with a BMI change of ±2 kg/m2 between their first and second pregnancies were compared with those who were BMI st

From the discovery of the Malta fever's agent to the discovery of a marine mammal reservoir, brucellosis has continuously been a re-emerging zoonosis.

Brucellosis is not a sustainable disease in humans. The source of human infection always resides in domestic or wild animal reservoirs. The routes of infection are multiple: food-borne, occupational or recreational, linked to travel and even to bioterrorism. New Brucella strains or species may emerge and existing Brucella species adapt to changing social, cultural, travel and agricultural environment. Brucella melitensis is the most important zoonotic agent, followed by Brucella abortus and Brucella suis. This correlates with the fact that worldwide, the control of bovine brucellosis (due to B

[Vision saved: the first four years of the pediatric ophthalmology screening program of the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta - Part II.].

INTRODUCTION: Amblyopia is one of the most common causes of preventable permanent visual impairment in childhood; its prevention requires early detection and targeted treatment. Children living in socioeconomically disadvantaged settlements have markedly limited access to ophthalmic care and are therefore at increased risk. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to present the outcomes achieved during the first four years (2020-2023) of the pediatric ophthalmology screening program of the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta in the detection, prevention, and treatment of amblyopia,
