Evaluating artificial intelligence-generated synthesized mammography as a standalone alternative to digital mammography with or without tomosynthesis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether standalone synthesized mammography (SM) can maintain or improve diagnostic accuracy while reducing reading time and radiation dose, compared to digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) with digital mammography (DM) or DM alone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study. SM images were generated using an AI-supported DBT reading method that synthesizes key features from DBT images without displaying marks or outlines. Twelve readers independently evaluated 200 breasts (including 50 cancers) using SM alone and DM with or without DBT acquired from October 2022

Baseline Mammography: What Is It and Why Is It Important? A Cross-Sectional Survey of Women Undergoing Screening Mammography.

OBJECTIVES: Studies have shown that having a baseline mammogram, the first screening mammogram, available for comparison at the time of interpreting a subsequent mammogram significantly decreases the potential of a false-positive examination. Our aim was to evaluate knowledge of and perception about the significance of baseline mammograms in those women undergoing screening mammography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional prospective survey study was conducted in women without a history of breast cancer presenting for their screening mammogram. Respondents were surveyed anonymously betwe

[Possibilities and limits of mammography with special reference to breast carcinoma--a comparison of clinical, mammography and histologic diagnoses].

This paper informs about the diagnostical accuracy of clinical examination and mammography at the women's Hospital of the Städtische Klinikum Zwickau from 1989 to 1992 when pathological changes of breasts are diagnosed. A total of 508 diagnostical biopsies was performed during this study period. The histological examination resulted in 276 benign breast lesions and in 232 breast cancers. In 432 cases there was a lump palpable in the breast that was noticed at first by more than 60% of women themselves. 288 (56.7%) correct and 220 (43.3%) false diagnoses were established following the clinical

Digital Mammography versus Digital Mammography Plus Tomosynthesis in Breast Cancer Screening: The Oslo Tomosynthesis Screening Trial.

Background Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) is replacing digital mammography (DM) in the clinical workflow. Currently, there are limited prospective studies comparing the diagnostic accuracy of both examinations and the role of synthetic mammography (SM) and computer-aided detection (CAD). Purpose To compare the accuracy of DM versus DM + DBT in population-based breast cancer screening. Materials and Methods This prospective study, performed from November 2010 to December 2012, included 24 301 women (mean age, 59.1 years ± 5.7 [standard deviation]) with 281 cancers, of which 51 were interval

Studies comparing screen-film mammography and full-field digital mammography in breast cancer screening: updated review.

Full-field digital mammography (FFDM) has several potential benefits as compared with screen-film mammography (SFM) in mammography screening. Digital technology also opens for implementation of advanced applications, including computer-aided detection (CAD) and tomosynthesis. Phantom studies and experimental clinical studies have shown that FFDM is equal or slightly superior to SFM for detection and characterization of mammographic abnormalities. Despite obvious advantages, the conversion to digital mammography has been slower than anticipated, and not only due to higher costs. Until very rece

Preliminary results for positron emission mammography: real-time functional breast imaging in a conventional mammography gantry.

In order to optimally integrate radiotracer breast imaging within the breast clinic, anatomy and pathology should be easily correlated with functional nuclear medicine breast images. As a first step in the development of a hybrid functional/anatomic breast imaging platform with biopsy capability, a conventional X-ray mammography gantry was modified to image the compressed breast with positron emitters. Phantom studies with the positron emission mammography (PEM) device showed that a 1-cc hot spot could be detected within 5 min. A preliminary clinical trial demonstrated in vivo visualization of

Multi-modal classification of breast cancer lesions in Digital Mammography and contrast enhanced spectral mammography images.

Breast cancer ranks as the second most prevalent cancer in women, recognized as one of the most dangerous types of cancer, and is on the rise globally. Regular screenings are essential for early-stage treatment. Digital mammography (DM) is the most recognized and widely used technique for breast cancer screening. Contrast-Enhanced Spectral Mammography (CESM or CM) is used in conjunction with DM to detect and identify hidden abnormalities, particularly in dense breast tissue where DM alone might not be as effective. In this work, we explore the effectiveness of each modality (CM, DM, or both) i

Impact of Full-Field Digital Mammography Versus Film-Screen Mammography in Population Screening: A Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Breast screening programs replaced film mammography with digital mammography, and the effects of this practice shift in population screening on health outcomes can be measured through examination of cancer detection and interval cancer rates. METHODS: A systematic review and random effects meta-analysis were undertaken. Seven databases were searched for publications that compared film with digital mammography within the same population of asymptomatic women and reported cancer detection and/or interval cancer rates. RESULTS: The analysis included 24 studies with 16 583 743 screen

Psychosocial determinants of mammography follow-up after receipt of abnormal mammography results in medically underserved women.

This article targets the relationship between psychosocial determinants and abnormal screening mammography follow-up in a medically underserved population. Health belief scales were modified to refer to diagnostic follow-up versus annual screening. A retrospective cohort study design was used. Statistical analyses were performed examining relationships among sociodemographic factors, psychosocial determinants, and abnormal mammography follow-up. Women with lower mean internal health locus of control scores (3.14) were two times more likely than women with higher mean internal health locus of c

Risk Factors for Late Screening Mammography.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer has the highest incidence of cancers in women in the United States. Previous research has shown that screening mammography contributes to reduced breast cancer mortality. This study aimed to clarify why late screening might occur in an at-risk population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a prospective cross-sectional study including 758 patients presenting to our radiology department for routine screening mammography who completed a 30-question survey regarding personal characteristics and mammography history. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were

Mammography Findings of Male Breast Diseases.

Over the past 2 decades, the percentage of men presenting with breast complaints has increased from 0.8% to 2.4%, and men now account for 1% of all breast cancer cases. The most common male breast mass is gynecomastia, followed by lipoma and epidermal inclusion cysts. Because there is a paucity of parenchyma as compared with the female breast, the malignancy rapidly progresses to the next stage, with the appearance of secondary signs like nipple retraction, fixation to deeper tissues, skin ulceration or adenopathy. Diagnostic evaluation is needed only when the palpable mass is unilateral, hard

Guidelines for high quality mammography screening.

Mammography is a method of choice for breast screening characterized with great effectiveness in early detection of breast cancer. High quality mammography means the best image quality with minimal breast radiation. The aim of this review is to determine the factors that reduce the MGD (mean glandular dose) in order to achieve minimal breast radiation without compromising the image quality. The implementation of quality standards in mammography screening includes the following activities: technological improvements, optimal calibration of the equipment in mammography centers according to the b

Testing theoretical explanations of mammography use.

The theory of care-seeking behavior was tested in the context of mammography use among midwestern women (N = 178). In multivariate logistic regressions, mammography adherence in the past 5 years was related to habit, the interaction of anxiety and barriers, belief in one's risk of breast cancer, age, and family history of breast cancer. Recent use of mammograms (i.e., in the past 1 or 2 years, depending on age) was related to norm and habit. Intention was related to utility beliefs regarding mammography, norm, habit, and belief in one's risk of breast cancer. As proposed from theory, anxiety a

Recruiting older women for screening mammography.

We compared health behavior and attitudes of older and younger women toward breast cancer screening by using data from the 1987 Texas Breast Screening Project, a community-based, low-cost screening program sponsored by the American Cancer Society, Texas Division. Because age is an important risk factor for breast cancer, the women were categorized into three age groups: 55 to 64 years old, 65 to 74 years old, and 75 years and older. Approximately 67% of the women 75 years and older, 64% of women in the 65 to 74 age group, and 59% of the younger (55 to 64) women had never had mammography. Moreo
