Management of horses showing stereotypic behaviour, owner perception and the implications for welfare.

A telephone survey was conducted of 100 racing stables, 100 riding schools and 100 competition establishments (8,427 horses in total) to determine what management practices were being applied to horses showing stereotypic behaviour, and to determine the underlying reasons for them by assessing the perceptions and opinions of the people working with the horses. The results indicated that horse owners are concerned about stereotypic behaviour, first, because it reduces the performance of the animal (31, 30 and 27 per cent of the owners of racing stables, riding schools and competition establishm

Conservative Management and Postoperative Return to Sport in Endurance Athletes with Flow Limitations in the Iliac Arteries: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Flow limitations in the iliac arteries (FLIA) is a sport-related vascular condition increasingly recognised as an occupational risk for professional cyclists and other endurance athletes. Surgical reconstruction is the definitive treatment for athletes wishing to continue competition. However, less information has been published regarding conservative management options and return-to-sport (RTS) guidelines. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to review the existing literature on conservative treatment of FLIA, identify knowledge gaps and propose an RTS framework for athletes returning to compe

Bilirubin-albumin binding in neonatal salicylate intoxication.

Impaired bilirubin-albumin binding (peroxidase method) was found in serum from a salicylate-toxic neonate. Bilirubin binding improved with serum dilution, indicating weak, competitive salicylate binding. The competitive effect of salicylate was much less than expected from calculations using data from the literature. This occurs because salicylate displaces bilirubin only from the primary bilirubin binding site, and the displaced bilirubin is buffered by secondary bilirubin binding sites. Binding data for salicylate and bilirubin are used to derive guidelines for the clinical management of jau

Spondylolisthesis in the athlete.

The diagnosis and appropriate management of spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis in the athlete can be challenging for the treating orthopaedic surgeon. With an increase in the number of skeletally immature athletes competing at more demanding levels of competition, an associated increase in the number of such cases may be seen. Management strategy is directed by the symptoms, the age of the patient, and the severity of the spondylolisthesis.

Differential motivational pathways to flow experience in competitive sailing.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding how motivational orientations shape flow experience is central to sport and performance psychology, particularly in competitive contexts characterized by high task demands and environmental uncertainty. Although motivation has long been regarded as a key antecedent of flow, limited empirical research has examined how different motivational orientations differentially influence flow experience in sailing regattas. METHODS: This study investigated the relationships between participation motivations and flow experience among competitive sailing regatta participants. F

Rib Stress Fractures and a Novel Muscle-Sparing Rib Fixation Plating in an Elite Tennis Player: A Systematic Review of the Literature and Case Report.

A nationally ranked Division One female collegiate tennis player presented with pain in the chest and right posterior rib region after feeling a popping sensation during a routine overhead movement. The patient was eventually diagnosed with 2 lower rib stress fractures. After unsuccessful conservative management, the player underwent an open reduction and internal fixation and autologous bone grafting of the sixth and seventh ribs with a muscle-sparing approach and was able to return to full competition. We present this case along with a systematic review of the literature regarding rib stress

Management of mid-season traumatic anterior shoulder instability in athletes.

Shoulder dislocation and subluxation injuries are common in young athletes and most frequently occur during the competitive season. Controversy exists regarding optimal treatment of an athlete with an in-season shoulder dislocation, and limited data are available to guide treatment. Rehabilitation may facilitate return to sport within 3 weeks, but return is complicated by a moderate risk of recurrence. Bracing may reduce the risk of recurrence, but it restricts motion and may not be tolerated in patients who must complete certain sport-specific tasks such as throwing. Surgical management of sh

Carpometacarpal Arthrodesis for Traumatic Carpal Boss Among Combative Athletes.

Among professional combat athletes, excessive and repetitive trauma to the carpometacarpal (CMC) joints may cause instability, arthritis, and the development of traumatic carpal boss. If nonoperative management is unsuccessful, CMC joint arthrodesis with iliac crest bone graft and supplemental Kirschner wire fixation is a reliable surgical option that results in pain-free return to full competition. From 2002 to 2015, 15 professional athletes with 17 symptomatic carpal bosses were treated with CMC joint arthrodesis after unsuccessful nonoperative management. The operative technique included de

Diagnosis and management of thoracic and rib pain in rowers.

Thoracic and lumbar injuries can dramatically affect a rower's performance and lead to time lost from practice and competition. Even though the number of injuries encountered by elite and competitive rowers appears to have increased over the past 20 years, rowing-specific research has been very limited in its scope and ability to guide practitioners caring for these athletes. Specifically, case reports relating to rib stress fractures abound, yet very few controlled studies discuss the mechanisms of injury and appropriate management of thoracic injuries. We believe that the identification and

Competitive Workflow: novel software architecture for automating drug design.

As industrialization of laboratory processes for drug discovery continues to gather momentum, the bottleneck has moved toward exploitation of this tide of information to enable better quality decisions. The development of information-management systems to automate data and materials management can have a positive impact on productivity, as can increasingly sophisticated computer-aided molecular design approaches. However, as long as key decisions can only be taken by a small number of expert individuals working in a complex social environment, the impact of such innovations will be limited. Th

Distinct risk factors for exertional heat exhaustion in competitive versus recreational amateur golfers: a stratified cross-sectional study.

Although preventing heat illness is critical in golf, risk profiles likely vary by engagement level. This study investigated whether risk factors for exertional heat exhaustion (EHE) differ between competitive and recreational golfers. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study targeting amateur golfers in Japan during the summers of 2024 and 2025. A stratified analysis was performed on competitive (n = 485) and recreational (n = 259) groups using multivariable logistic regression to identify independent risk factors. Although perceived dehydration and loss of appetite were universal r

Antiplatelet and Anticoagulation Therapy in Athletes: A Cautious Compromise… If Possible!

Antiplatelet and anticoagulation therapy are commonly used in the general population and sometimes in athletes experiencing cardiovascular disorders. In these cases, the treatment has to be tailored according to the individual bleeding and thrombotic risk profile, also considering the intrinsic risk of sports activities when advising athletes for eligibility for competitive sports. In athletes, it is necessary to pre-assess the individual bleeding risk, considering not only the personal bleeding risk (usually low in athletes) but also the type of sport the athlete would like to practice, with

Acute hand and wrist injuries in athletes: evaluation and management.

Acute hand and wrist injuries in the athlete constitute a unique orthopaedic challenge. Because of the particular demands on the athlete (e.g., financial implications, coaching and administration pressures, self-esteem issues), a specialized management approach is often necessary. Common sites of injury include the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint, proximal interphalangeal joint, metacarpals and phalanges, scaphoid, hamate, and distal radius. Treatment of these injuries varies depending on the patient's age, sport, position played, and level of competition, but

Current biomechanical methods and practices of physical training load monitoring in women's artistic gymnastics: A scoping review.

Women's artistic gymnastics (WAG) is a precision-based sport involving intense physical and technical training from a young age. Injuries in WAG can be a result of poorly managed acute and/or chronic biomechanical loads. This scoping review aims to identify current biomechanical methods of load monitoring in WAG. This review followed the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Four databases (MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus) were searched for studies that measured biomechanical load of competi

Arthroscopic-assisted Fixation of a Nonunited Coronoid Stress Fracture in a Competitive Gymnast: A Case Report.

CASE: Gymnasts may suffer elbow injuries due to repetitive loading. However, coronoid stress fractures remain uncommon. We report a case of a high-level female competitive gymnast with a nondisplaced coronoid stress fracture that failed to heal with conservative management. Arthroscopic-assisted in situ fixation of the coronoid nonunion was performed, and the gymnast returned to competition after the fracture healed. CONCLUSION: Coronoid stress fractures should be considered in gymnasts presenting with chronic elbow pain. If nonoperative treatment is unsuccessful, arthroscopic fixation can be

[Endocardial Electrophysiological Study in an Asymptomatic Competitive Athlete With Ventricular Preexitation due to Conduction via Fasciculoventricular Accessory Pathway].

We present a clinical case of a rare form of the WPW phenomenon due to anterograde conduction over fasciculoventricular accessory pathway in 20-year-old competitive athlete. The patient had no history of palpitations or syncope. ECG revealed shortening of PQ interval (112 ms) and wide QRS complex due to conduction via accessory pathway. To address the question of participation in competitive activity and the need for ablation the patient underwent endocardial electrophysiological study in the course of which we verified conduction via fasciculoventricular accessory pathway.
