INTRODUCTION: The sacrifice of inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) is usual in case of resection of mandibular tumors and is responsible for disabling sensory disorders, drooling and lip incompetence. We report the case of a reconstruction of the IAN by means of an autologous nerve graft after segmental resection of the mandible.
OBSERVATION: A 27-year-old man presented with a recurrence of mandibular ameloblastoma. Treatment consisted in segmental mandibulectomy with resection of the IAN. Bone reconstruction was performed with a fibula free flap and IAN reconstruction was obtained by mean of a 7-c

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a slow growing malignant neoplasm of the salivary glands, mainly occurring in minor salivary glands and relatively rare in parotid glands. It has got a remarkable capacity for extensive subclinical spread to the adjacent structures. Here, we present a case report of adenoid cystic carcinoma of parotid gland with perineural and perivascular spread. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of adenoid cystic carcinoma of parotid gland with perivascular spread along a major artery (ECA) and perineural spread along two different nerves (mandibular nerve and faci

Microscopic alterations in the dental pulp of dogs have not been extensively studied. The aim of this study was to investigate microscopic alterations of the dental pulp in dogs' teeth. One hundred and ten surgically extracted teeth (20 incisors, 23 canines, 28 premolars, and 39 molars) from 74 dogs, of different ages, with a history of chronic periodontitis (66 dogs), periapical abscesses (2 dogs), pulpitis (2 dogs), oral cavity neoplasms (2 dogs), dens invaginatus (1 dog), and dental fractures (1 dog) were included. Eight-one maxillary and 29 mandibular teeth were included. Coronal, radicula

Oral amelanotic melanoma (OAM) is a rare, non-pigmented mucosal neoplasm representing less than 2% of all melanoma. The present study analyses the available data on OAM and describes its clinicopathological features, identifying potential prognostic factors. Online electronic databases such as PubMed-Medline, Embase, and Scopus were searched using appropriate keywords from the earliest available date till 31st March 2021 without restriction on language. Additional sources like Google Scholar, major journals, unpublished studies, conference proceedings, and cross-references were explored. 37 pu

BACKGROUND: Disarticulation is indicated when pathologic process involves the condyle or when a body/ramus lesion extends into condylar process. The goal of reconstruction is to reinstate joint mechanism for function and also to restore facial symmetry.
AIM: Retrospective evaluation of functional and aesthetic outcomes in patients with disarticulation defects of mandible treated with concomitant alloplastic temporomandibular joint replacement and microvascular free flap reconstruction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine patients (8 benign pathologies and 1 secondary reconstruction for malignant neo

AIM: To report a small intaalveolar ameloblastoma which resembled cystic lesion, and to emphasize the value of Computed tomography (CT) in radiographic examination.
BACKGROUND: Ameloblastoma is a slow-growing, locally invasive odontogenic neoplasm that accounts for approximately 10% of all tumors detected in the jaws. Radiographically, those tumors are usually well-defined. Computerized tomography is highly recommended to confirm the diagnosis.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 48-year-old female attended with a chief complaint of painless swelling in the left anterior of mandible, 1 month duration. In in

Oral metastasis from the colon is quite rare with limited reporting and scientific evidence. The most common metastasis from colorectal cancer is to the liver followed by lungs, bones, and other organs. However rare occurrences like metastasis to the oral cavity might worsen the prognosis and treatment outcome. Oral metastatic tumors account only 1% of all the malignant neoplasms of the jaw. In most of the cases metastasis has been reported in the jaw bones compared to soft tissues. Persistent pain and delayed, prolonged healing should raise the question of an underlying lesion. An unusual cas

BACKGROUND: The association between the synovial chondromatosis (SC) and the calcium pyrophosphate deposition (pseudogotta) in temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is very rare and has been described just 1 patient in the literature.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 64-year-old woman was referred to Dipartimento di Scienze Odontostomatologiche e Maxillo-Facciali, Sapienza Università di Roma after complaining about right temporomandibular pain, limitation in mandibular movements, and tumefaction in the right preauricular region. The patient was hospitalized for the surgery. The microscopic examination of the

UNLABELLED: Gorlin syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder exhibiting high penetrance and variable expressivity. It is characterized by facial dysmorphism, skeletal anomalies, multiple basal cell carcinomas, odontogenic keratocysts (OKC), palmar and plantar pits, bifid ribs, vertebral anomalies and a variety of other malformations. Various neoplasms, such as medulloblastomas, meningiomas, ovarian and cardiac fibromas are also found in this syndrome.
OBJECTIVE: To describe a twelve-year-old patient with Gorlin-Goltz syndrome, with basal cell carcinomas and promyelocytic leukemia develop

Cryosurgery is a proved method for treatment of neoplasms of the soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. It is not free, however, from postoperative complications. Delayed healing and extensive scarring are common occurrences. Significant functional and esthetic impairment, although uncommon, can result. Exposure of lingual mandibular bone can interfere with prosthetic replacement. Postfreezing evaluation of cervical nodes in patients treated for oral cancers can be complicated by persistent lymphadenopathy. Cryosurgery of irradiated bone or overlying tissue can result in osteoradionecrosis.

Osteomas of the jaws are rare osteogenic lesions considered to be true neoplasms, characterized by the proliferation of compact and/or cancellous bone. It can be central, peripheral, or of an extraskeletal type. The central osteoma arises from the endosteum, the peripheral osteoma from the periosteum, and the extraskeletal soft tissue osteoma usually develops within a muscle. However, in a previous work we have suggested that at least some peripheral osteomas may be reactive rather than neoplasms, probably associated with trauma. Some reported cases did have a clear history of trauma; however,

Ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma (GCOC) is a rare malignant neoplasm, representing 3% of all ghost cell lesions of the jaws. They can arise de novo or from a pre-existing calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) or dentinogenic ghost cell tumour (DGCT). A systematic review of the literature reported only 12 cases of a GCOC arising from a pre-existing COC. This report highlights an additional case of a GCOC arising from a pre-existing COC after 3 years in an adolescent male. The patient initially presented with a painless swelling of the right mandibular corpus. Panoramic radiographic examination show

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) can be rarely found as a primarily intraosseous lesion and mistaken for other intraosseous or odontogenic pathology. A 65-year-old man had a poorly defined radiolucency distal to the left mandibular second molar root. Periapical radiographs demonstrated a minor radiolucency from 2.5 years prior. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon felt the radiolucency represented periodontal disease, extracting tooth #18. The differential diagnosis of mixed radiolucent/radio-opaque mandibular lesions includes: (1) fibro-osseous lesion, (2) odontogenic and non-odontogenic cyst, (3)

Masses in the parapharyngeal area are rare and often due to infectious phenomena arising from the oral cavity or pharynx which lead to abscess formation. Less frequently, the lesion can be neoplastic. Tumours of the parapharyngeal space are rare, accounting for less than 1% of all head and neck neoplasms. We report the case of a patient who came to our observation for mandibular pain. Multiparametric diagnostic imaging was done thus showing a parapharyngeal mass. An ultrasound guided biopsy was performed by a transcutaneous route with a high median approach at neck level, to characterize the m

An eighteen-year-old female Eurasian otter became emaciated and died. Necropsy examination revealed nose and thoracic cutaneous masses, abdominal subcutaneous mass, and multiple nodules in the liver and lungs. Malignant melanoma was found in the nose cutaneous mass and to have metastasized to the liver, lungs, kidneys, adrenal glands, mammary glands and left mandibular lymph node. The neoplastic cells were labeled for vimentin, melanoma, and S100. The cutaneous mass in the thoracic area consisted of spindle shaped neoplastic epithelial cells and was diagnosed as trichoblastoma. Mammary gland a

Myoepithelial tumors were first described in 1943, and account for less than 1% of all salivary gland neoplasms. Their malignant variant, myoepithelial carcinoma, was first reported by Stromeyer et al. in 1975 and represents a very rare entity, characterized by distinct morphologic heterogeneity and an infiltrative growth pattern into adjacent tissues. However, there have been few reports on myoepithelial carcinoma affecting intra-oral minor salivary glands, and its immunohistochemical features have been poorly illustrated. We herein describe a rare case of myoepithelial carcinoma affecting th

BACKGROUND: Desmoplastic fibroma is a rare, benign but locally aggressive fibroblastic tumor of bone, accounting for less than 0.1% of primary bone neoplasms. The mandible is its most frequent site, and occurrence in children is exceptionally uncommon. Because of its infiltrative behavior and the potential for significant functional and aesthetic consequences in growing patients, determining the optimal treatment approach-particularly the role of emerging non-surgical therapies-remains a clinical challenge.

Most cases of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in pinnipeds are diagnosed postmortem; antemortem diagnosis and active therapeutic intervention are rarely reported, and prognosis is generally considered poor. We report an antemortem diagnosis of mandibular oral SCC in a spotted seal (Phoca largha) with progressive feeding difficulty due to tumor-associated pain that worsened despite analgesics. Partial rostral mandibulectomy (left second incisor to right second premolar) with lip-tissue reconstruction restored feeding by postoperative day 2. Despite tumor recurrence, the seal maintained feeding fu
