BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Unlike tobacco, the effect of marijuana smoke on subclinical atherosclerosis, a surrogate measure for cardiovascular disease, is not known. This study aimed to determine the association between lifetime exposure to marijuana and measures of subclinical atherosclerosis in mid-life.
DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: We used data from the US-based Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, a cohort of black and white men and women aged 18-30 years at baseline in 1985-86, with up to seven follow-up examinations over 25 years. A total of 3498 participants

Both cigarette smoking and marijuana use during pregnancy pose serious risks to healthy fetal development, yet little is known about the comparative contribution of recent versus past traumatic experiences to women's smoking behavior. The current study aimed to examine the relative contributions of childhood adversity and past year intimate partner violence (IPV) to women's cigarette and marijuana use during pregnancy in a high-risk, low-income sample. Participants (n = 101) were interviewed to evaluate past year IPV, childhood adversity, and cigarette and marijuana use. Results indicated that

Heavy use of marijuana is claimed to damage critical skills related to short-term memory, visual scanning and attention. Motor skills and driving safety may be compromised by the acute effects of marijuana. The aim of this study was to investigate the acute effects of 13 mg and 17 mg Delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on skills important for coordinated movement and driving and on subjective and autonomic measures in regular users of marijuana. Fourteen regular users of marijuana were enrolled. Each subject was tested on two separate days. On each test day, subjects smoked two low-nicotine cig

This study finds evidence for 24-h carry-over effects of a moderate social dose of marijuana on a piloting task. In separate sessions, nine currently active pilots smoked one cigarette containing 20 mg of delta 9 THC and one Placebo cigarette. Using an aircraft simulator, pilots flew just before smoking, and 0.25, 4, 8, 24, and 48 h after smoking. Marijuana impaired performance at 0.25, 4, 8, and 24 h after smoking. While seven of the nine pilots showed some degree of impairment at 24 h after smoking, only one reported any awareness of the drug's effects. The results support our preliminary st

Marijuana has been shown to be one of the commonly abused substances in the world, especially among teenagers and young adults. Although its addictive potential and psychomotor side-effects have been widely publicized, the issue of possible carcinogenicity is not as well perceived. Marijuana smoke contains many of the same organic and inorganic compounds that are carcinogens, co-carcinogens, or tumor promoters found in tobacco smoke. We have encountered several young marijuana users with no history of tobacco smoking or other significant risk factors who were diagnosed to have lung or other ae

BACKGROUND: It is generally assumed that marijuana is one of the more widely used controlled substances during pregnancy. However, there remains a general paucity of population-based data regarding its use and subsequent perinatal morbidity. We hypothesized that direct patient query during pregnancy regarding marijuana, tobacco, and nicotine use would provide crucial initial population-based data on perinatal risk.
OBJECTIVE: Our study sought to examine maternal and neonatal outcomes in pregnancies with reported marijuana exposure, in isolation or in combination with maternal cigarette smokin

OBJECTIVES: To examine prevalence and patterns of smoked marijuana and perceived benefit and to assess demographic and clinical factors associated with marijuana use among HIV patients in a public health care setting.
METHODS: Participants (n = 252) were recruited via consecutive sampling in public health care clinics. Structured interviews assessed patterns of recent marijuana use, including its perceived benefit for symptom relief. Associations between marijuana use and demographic and clinical variables were examined using univariate and multivariate regression analyses.
RESULTS: Overall

Marijuana is among the most widely used recreational drugs in the United States. The most common side effects of marijuana include mood changes, impaired memory, impaired body movements, and hallucination. Chronic use of marijuana is associated with transaminitis and hepatomegaly. Reported cases of acute hepatitis secondary to heavy marijuana smoking are very rare.

Seven adult male volunteers residing on a research ward received intravenous cocaine and smoked marijuana, alone and in combination, during daily experimental sessions. Following the determination of baseline cardiovascular indexes, a one gram marijuana cigarette (0-2.7% delta 9-THC w/w) was smoked. Cocaine hydrochloride (0-32 mg) was administered intravenously 13 minutes after the start of marijuana smoking. Cocaine alone produced dose-dependent increases in heart rate, while both low and high THC blood levels produced a similar increase in heart rate. Both doses of cocaine increased mean art

BACKGROUND: Marijuana use is increasingly widespread among adolescents and young adults; however, few studies have examined longitudinal trajectories of marijuana use during this important developmental period. As such, we examined adolescent trajectories of marijuana use and the psychosocial factors that may differentiate individuals who escalate their marijuana use over adolescence and young adulthood from those who do not.
METHODS: Participants were 1204 9th and 10th graders at baseline who were over-sampled for cigarette use and were followed over 6-years, as part of an extensive longitud

OBJECTIVE: Although a number of studies have examined the respiratory impact of marijuana smoking, such studies have generally used convenience samples of marijuana and tobacco users. The current study examined respiratory effects of marijuana and tobacco use in a nationally representative sample while controlling for age, gender, and current asthma.
DESIGN: Analysis of the nationally representative third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III).
SETTING: U.S. households.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 6,728 adults age 20 to 59 who completed the drug, tobacco, and health sect

OBJECTIVE: Despite the high prevalence of blunt (i.e., hollowed-out cigars that are filled with marijuana) use among Black marijuana smokers, few studies have examined if and how blunt users differ from traditional joint users.
METHOD: The current study compared the prevalence and patterns of use for those who smoked blunts in the past month (i.e., blunt users) with those who used marijuana through other methods (i.e., other marijuana users). The sample included 935 Black past-month marijuana smokers participating in the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
RESULTS: Among past-month

BACKGROUND: Acute aortic dissection (AD) is a life-threatening condition most frequently seen in men with an average age >60 years. Risk factors include family history, hypertension and cigarette smoking. AD has been associated with methamephatamine and cocaine use but has not previously been associated with the use of marijuana.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of an aortic dissection in a 56-year-old male that occurred while smoking marijuana. The patient had a family history significant for both aortic aneurysm and dissection. He developed crushing chest pain, shortness of breath, and diaphor

BACKGROUND: Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a chronic progressive liver disease of unknown aetiology characterised by immune-mediated destruction of small and medium-sized intrahepatic bile ducts. There are few well-established risk factors and epidemiological studies are needed to further evaluate the pathogenesis of the disease.
AIM: To evaluate the relationship between alcohol intake, smoking and marijuana use with PBC development.
METHODS: We conducted a prevalent case control study of 200 cases and 200 age (within a five year age band) and sex-matched controls, identified from the

BACKGROUND: The emergence of a plethora of new tobacco products marketed as being less harmful than smoking, such as electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products, and the increased popularity of recreational marijuana have raised concerns about the potential cardiovascular risk associated with their use.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the use of novel tobacco products or marijuana can cause the development of proarrhythmic substrate and eventually lead to arrhythmias.
METHODS: Rats were exposed to smoke from tobacco, marijuana, or cannabinoid-depleted ma

Although it is widely accepted that delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta9-THC) is the primary psychoactive constituent of marijuana, questions persist as to whether other components contribute to marijuana's pharmacological activity. The present experiments assessed the cannabinoid activity of marijuana smoke exposure in mice and tested the hypothesis that delta9-THC mediates these effects through a CB1 receptor mechanism of action. First, the effects of delta9-THC on analgesia, hypothermia, and catalepsy were compared with those of a marijuana extract with equated delta9-THC content after eithe

OBJECTIVE: The study objective was to determine whether donor substance abuse (opioid overdose death, opioid use, cigarette or marijuana smoking) impacts lung acceptance and recipient outcomes.
METHODS: Donor offers to a single center from 2013 to 2019 were reviewed to determine if lung acceptance rates and recipient outcomes were affected by donor substance abuse.
RESULTS: There were 3515 donor offers over the study period. A total of 154 offers (4.4%) were opioid use and 117 (3.3%) were opioid overdose deaths. A total of 1744 donors (65.0%) smoked cigarettes and 69 donors (2.6%) smoked mar

Previous data suggest that regular tobacco smoking may lead to nonspecific airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) independent of airway obstruction, possibly because of effects on bronchial inflammation or mucosal permeability. Little is known concerning the effects on AHR of other widely smoked substances besides tobacco such as marijuana or cocaine. The smoke of both marijuana and cocaine contains respiratory irritants that elicit cough and produce abnormalities in airway dynamics and bronchial mucosal histopathology in habitual smokers. Therefore, regular smoking of one or both of these illicit s
