Acuariid, capillariid and hymenolepidid parasites of the dasyurid marsupial Antechinus stuartii Macleay, 1841, from southeastern Australia.

Stammerinema suffodiax sp. n. is described from the dasyurid marsupial Antechinus stuartii. It differs from S. soricis, the only other member of the genus, in lacking lateral body spines, as well as in the spicules and characters of the anterior extremity. As well as redescribing Synhimantus australiensis (Johnston and Mawson, 1952) now collected from the stomach of A. stuartii, a new capillariid, Capillaria rickardi from the stomach and two cestodes Hymenolepis aklei sp. n. and H. bradleyi sp. n. are described from the same host.

Phylogenomics supports monophyly of marsupial crustaceans: a journey to direct development.

Peracarida (marsupial crustaceans) represent one of the most diverse and ecologically important crustacean groups, yet their evolutionary relationships have long been debated. Here, we present the most comprehensive phylogenomic analysis of Peracarida to date, incorporating the relict taxa Thermosbaenacea, Mictacea, Ingolfiellida, and Spelaeogriphacea in a phylogenomic framework. Our results robustly confirm peracarid monophyly and recover a well-supported clade uniting Mancoida (Isopoda, Tanaidaca, Cumacea, Spelaeogriphacea) and Mictacea. We propose for Mictacea to be classified as part of th

Changes in the Skin Microbiota in Two Bare-nosed Wombats (Vombatus ursinus) with Differing Recovery Trajectories following Treatment for Sarcoptic Mange.

We report tracking of bacterial skin microbiota for two bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus) following in situ treatment for sarcoptic mange. Sarcoptes scabiei, the etiologic agent, has dramatic effects on skin microbiota. Our case reports show differing disease trajectory and bacterial beta diversity between the two treated individuals.

Treatment of Sarcoptic Mange in Wombats With Topical Moxidectin.

Sarcoptic mange is a debilitating disease affecting free-living/wild bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus). The disease causes thickening of the skin, pruritus, alopecia and deep fissures in the skin of infected animals, and ultimately death if left untreated. In Australia, there are approvals from the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority to use moxidectin for treating sarcoptic mange in bare-nosed wombats; however, few published literatures document the success of treatment regimens. Two adult male bare-nosed wombats presented with dermatitis, erythema and crusting of the

Sarcoptic Mange in a Tasmanian Devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) and Bennett's Wallaby (Notamacropus rufogriseus).

Sarcoptes scabiei mites and skin lesions consistent with severe sarcoptic mange were identified in a Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) and Bennett's wallaby (Notamacropus rufogriseus) from Tasmania, Australia. The devil and wallaby both had severe hyperkeratotic skin lesions. All stages of mite development were identified in the devil, suggesting parasite reproduction on the host. The devil was also affected by devil facial tumor disease and several other parasites. This expands the global host range of species susceptible to this panzootic mange disease.

Fine-Scale Landscape Epidemiology: Sarcoptic Mange in Bare-Nosed Wombats (Vombatus ursinus).

Landscape epidemiology provides a valuable framework to interpret, predict, and manage spatiotemporal patterns of disease. Yet, owing to the difficulty of detecting pathogen occurrence in free-ranging wildlife, disentangling the factors driving disease dynamics remains a considerable challenge, particularly at fine spatial scales. Here, we investigated the fine-scale landscape epidemiology of sarcoptic mange-a visually apparent disease caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei-in bare-nosed wombats (Vombatus ursinus), by: (1) characterizing the distribution and density of wombats within the landsca

Small mammals from the Caatinga: A dataset for the Brazilian semiarid biome.

The Caatinga is an exclusively Brazilian biome, and is the largest and most biodiverse Seasonal Tropical Dry Forest in the world. Despite that, the mammalian fauna, especially small mammals, is the least studied of all Brazilian biomes. In order to fill gaps and provide detailed information on small mammals (Didelphimorphia, Rodentia) in the Caatinga biome, we compiled reliable records focusing on richness, composition and some biometric data. These records came from mammal collections, papers, theses, books, and unpublished data, prioritizing records with vouchers housed in scientific collect

Out on a limb: bandicoot limb co-variation suggests complex impacts of development and adaptation on marsupial forelimb evolution.

Marsupials display far less forelimb diversity than placentals, possibly because of the laborious forelimb-powered climb to the pouch performed by most marsupial neonates. This is thought to result in stronger morphological integration (i.e., higher co-variance) within the marsupial forelimb skeleton, and lower integration between marsupial fore- and hind limbs, compared to other mammals. Possible mechanisms for this constraint are a fundamental developmental change in marsupial limb patterning, or alternatively more immediate perinatal biomechanical and metabolic requirements. In the latter c

Mammalian development does not recapitulate suspected key transformations in the evolutionary detachment of the mammalian middle ear.

The ectotympanic, malleus and incus of the developing mammalian middle ear (ME) are initially attached to the dentary via Meckel's cartilage, betraying their origins from the primary jaw joint of land vertebrates. This recapitulation has prompted mostly unquantified suggestions that several suspected--but similarly unquantified--key evolutionary transformations leading to the mammalian ME are recapitulated in development, through negative allometry and posterior/medial displacement of ME bones relative to the jaw joint. Here we show, using µCT reconstructions, that neither allometric nor topol

Efferent connections of the main olfactory bulb in the opossum (Monodelphis domestica): a characterization of the olfactory entorhinal cortex in a marsupial.

Olfactory projections have been investigated for decades, but few reports using modern, sensitive neural tracers are available. In marsupials, only lesion-degeneration studies exist and they are restricted to the genera Didelphis and Trichosurus. Some of the territories described as olfactory-recipient such as the upper portion of the rhinal fissure and the vomeronasal amygdala are, however, controversial. Also, the characterization of the olfactory portion of the entorhinal cortex is far from clear in acallosal mammals. The present report investigates, using biotinylated dextran-amine, the ol

A case of bitten Bettongs.

Australia has a unique collection of native fauna, which is often threatened by physical harm or the destruction of its habitat and conservation of endangered species is a primary concern. Investigation of the recent deaths of Bettongs in Lincoln National Park, South Australia was undertaken by the Forensic Odontology Unit, Adelaide University to determine the likely perpetrator. Feral domestic cats were deemed to be responsible, as indicated by bitemarks on the radiotransmitter collars.

Secretion of electrolytes, protein and urea by the mandibular gland of the common wombat (Vombatus ursinus).

Saliva was collected from the mandibular glands of anaesthetized common wombats (Vombatus ursinus) to ascertain maximal flow rates, salivary composition and possible adaptations, particularly PO4(3-) secretion, to assist digestion. After temporary catheterization of the main duct through its oral opening, salivary secretion was evoked at flow rates ranging from 0.02 +/- 0.002 (+/- SEM) ml.min-1 (0.7 +/- 0.07 microliter.min-1.kg body weight-1) to 0.4 +/- 0.05 ml.min-1 (14 +/- 1.9 microliters.min-1.kg body weight-1) by ipsilateral intracarotid infusion of acetylcholine. Evidence from plasma progesterone concentrations for male-induced ovulation in the brush-tailed bettong, Bettongia penicillata.

Female brush-tailed bettongs, Bettongia penicillata, were housed with either an intact or vasectomized male or isolated from males in the peripartum period. Development of the quiescent corpus luteum formed at the post partum oestrus was initiated by removing the pouch young. Blood samples for analysis of plasma progesterone were collected from the females 2 days before removal of pouch young, daily for 5 or 6 days and then 2-3 times each week until 19 days after removal of pouch young. Plasma progesterone profiles were similar in pregnant and nonpregnant cycles. There was an early progesteron

Urogenital vasculature and local steroid concentrations in the uterine branch of the ovarian vein of the female tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii).

The urogenital vasculature of the tammar comprises 4 major paired arteries and veins: the ovarian, the cranial urogenital, the caudal urogenital and the internal pudendal artery and vein. The ovarian artery and vein and their uterine branches which supply the ovary, oviduct and uterus, ramify extensively. Each anterior urogenital artery and vein supplies the caudal regions of the ipsilateral uterus, lateral and median vagina and cranial parts of the urogenital sinus. The caudal urogenital arteries and veins supply the urogenital sinus and caudal regions of the bladder. The internal pudendal ar

Developmental process of the modern house shrew's molars: implications for the evolution of the tribosphenic molar in Mesozoic mammals.

Phylogenetically, the tribosphenic molars-prototypes of multi-cusped cheek teeth in marsupial and placental mammals-are derived from the single-cusped conical teeth of reptiles through the addition of cusps. Ontogenetically, mammalian molars are formed through the interface between the dental epithelium and mesenchyme (future enamel-dentin junction), becoming geometrically complex by adding epithelial signaling centers, called enamel knots, which determine future cusp positions. To reevaluate cusp homologies in Mesozoic mammals from an ontogenetic perspective, this study tracked molar developm

Comparative three-dimensional jaw muscle anatomy of marsupial carnivores (Dasyurus spp.) and the termite-eating numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus).

Among marsupials, the endangered numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus) is the only obligate myrmecophage with a diet comprised strictly of termites. Like many other specialised myrmecophagous mammals, numbats have a gracile and highly specialised skull morphology with an elongated rostrum and small braincase. Myrmecobiidae is one of four taxonomic families within the Australasian marsupial order Dasyuromorphia, and to date, the muscular anatomy of any member of this group is relatively poorly known. We utilised microdissection and contrast-enhanced microcomputed tomography scanning to provide the fir
