[A surgical case of giant mediastinal teratoma].

A 35-year-old female was admitted with a large abnormal shadow in the left lung field on a chest X-ray. She was examined by chest tomogram, chest CT, MRI and bronchofiberscope. The CT and MRI showed a large tumor mass pressing the left lung and calcified deposits in the central part of the tumor. Bronchofiberscopic findings showed a stenosis of the left main bronchus. The clinical diagnosis was mature teratoma arising from anterior medistinum. She underwent a median sternotomy and the tumor was removed. The size of the resected specimen, filled with sebaceous material, hair and teeth, etc., wa

A case of multiple synchronous localized fibrous tumor of the pleura.

We report a patient with two synchronous distinct masses in the same hemithorax both of which got the diagnosis of benign localized fibrous tumor of the pleura. The plain chest X-ray was rather obscured due to a large left-sided pleural effusion, but her subsequent computerized chest tomography revealed a heterogeneous hypodense soft tissue mass, which was pleural in origin, sitting on the diaphragm bathed in fluid. At thoracotomy, we detected two distinct masses in the left hemithorax, both arising from the visceral pleura via their vascular pedicles.

Reconstruction of Chest Wall by Cryopreserved Sternal Allograft after Resection of Aneurysmal Bone Cyst of Sternum.

A 20-year-old female was referred to our hospital due to deformity and bulging in anterior aspect of chest wall in sternal area. Chest X-ray and CT scan confirmed a large mass with destruction of sternum. Pathologic diagnosis after incisional biopsy was compatible with aneurysmal bone cyst. We resected sternum completely and reconstructed large anterior defect by a cryopreserved sternal allograft. In follow-up of patient there was no unstability of chest wall with good cosmetic result.

Mediastinal Liposarcoma With Anterior and Posterior Mediastinal Involvement: A Thoracic Oncovascular Case Report.

A 64-year-old patient presented with shortness of breath and chest pressure. The initial examination was unremarkable, and a chest X-ray revealed a large mediastinal mass. Computed tomography (CT) scan demonstrated a lobulated mediastinal mass involving the great vessels and mass effect on the trachea, esophagus, and heart. A CT-guided biopsy showed a monotonous, evenly spaced population of mature, normal-appearing adipocytes consistent with a well-differentiated lipoma-like liposarcoma/atypical lipomatous tumor. The patient underwent a median sternotomy with en bloc tumor resection without ad

Breast cancer presenting as a mass in the axilla: a report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer presenting initially as enlarged axillary lymph node is very unusual. OBJECTIVE: To highlight the less frequent clinical presentation of breast cancer as persistent isolated, unilateral axillary lymphadenopathy. METHODS: A report of two patients who presented with persistent axillary lymphadenopathy. Case one was a 65-year old woman who presented with an eight-month history of a painless mass in the right axilla. Clinical breast examination was normal. A mammogram was performed. The sub-clinical mass was excised using wire-guided localization providing a specimen fo

Pulmonary sarcoma complicated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1).

We report here a case of primary pulmonary sarcoma complicated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). A 60-year-old man was urgently admitted to Tokai University Hospital, Japan, due to severe right chest pain. Skin inspection showed subcutaneous tumor lesions and café-au-lait spots, and therefore a diagnosis of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) was made. Chest X-ray showed marked fluid accumulation in the right pleural cavity, and he was diagnosed as having empyema by thoracic drainage. Chest X-ray showed a large round mass lesion (80 mm in diameter) in the right lower lung field. Percutaneous nee

[Mediastinal cystic lymphangioma; report of a case].

A cystic lymphangioma is a rare mediastinal benign tumor. A 38-year-old male was referred to our hospital because of an mediastinal mass incidentally detected on chest X-ray. The mass had enlarged rapidly during the course of 1 year. Computed tomography (CT) of the chest showed a 7 cm well defined cystic tumor in the left anterior mediastinum. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a mass with heterogeneous high signal intensity on enhanced T2-weighted images. The cystic tumor, localized in the mediastinal adipose tissue, was completely resected by a thoracoscopic procedure. A pathologi

[Schwannoma of the recurrent laryngeal nerve; report of a case].

A 57-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital because of an abnormal shadow on her chest X-ray film and a palpable left neck mass. She had a mild cough. Computed tomography (CT) scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the chest demonstrated a well-circumscribed, huge mass (approximately 14 cm in diameter) in the left anterior mediastinum. On June 12th, 2000, the mass was resected. During surgery, the tumor seemed to arise from the left recurrent laryngeal nerve. The pathological examination revealed the tumor as a schwannoma. Recurrent laryngeal nerve schwannoma is extremely rare.

[Thymolipoma in association with myasthenia gravis; report of a case].

An 18-year-old man was admitted with easy fatigue and muscle weakness. A diagnosis of myasthenia gravis was made. Chest X-ray showed no mediastinal abnormality, however, chest computed tomography (CT) showed a soft tissue mass in the thymus. The patient underwent extended thymectomy and small tumor (2 x 2 x 2 cm) was resected. On histological examination the tumor proved to be a thymolipoma composed of mature adipose elements containing cords and nests of thymic tissue. Symptoms of myasthenia gravis were dramatically improved after the operation. This case is the 12th in the world literature i

Cystic mediastinal mass.

CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old woman with no other medical history presented with 1-month history of fever, weight loss and dyspnoea. On examination she had elevated jugular venous pressure and tachycardia. Her chest X-ray posterioranterior view (figure 1A) showed a rounded mass in the right cardiophrenic angle obscuring the right atrial margin, producing a 'silhouette' sign. Echocardiography showed a large cystic mass with thickened pericardium, lateral to the right atrium, causing right atrial compression (figure 1B). CT image of the chest showed a cystic lesion compressing the right atriu

Thoracic extramedullary hematopoiesis associated with hereditary spherocytosis.

A 54-year-old man was diagnosed with hereditary spherocytosis. An X-ray of the chest disclosed bilateral round masses in the upper and lower posterior mediastinum. CT showed homogeneous round masses of soft tissue density in the posterior mediastinum. A needle biopsy of the mass showed hyperplastic erythroid bone marrow. Fatty metamorphosis of the masses was observed in CT 2 years after splenectomy but showed no change in size.

A ring calcified benign thymoma in a patient with asbestos exposure.

The differential diagnosis of a mediastinal mass with ring calcification on chest X-ray includes thymoma, dermoid tumour, teratoma, neurogenic tumours and lymphadenopathy. Cross-sectional imaging via CT can aid diagnosis. This case may also demonstrate an association between asbestos exposure and thymoma calcification.

[Three cases of localized pleural tuberculosis which looked exacerbated during antituberculous chemotherapy].

We reported three cases whose pleural tumorous shadows enlarged during the intensive chemotherapy for tuberculosis. The patients were 39 year-old female, 63 year-old female, and 22 year-old male. Their chest X-ray films on admission showed pleural effusion or infiltration, but no tumorous shadows. Eight to 16 weeks after starting the antituberculous therapy with INH, RFP and SM, new tumorous shadows appeared in the right chest wall (case 1, 3) or the left chest wall (case 2). The mass extracted from case 1 contained granuloma with caseous necrosis. The tumorous shadows on chest X-ray films in

[A case of pulmonary inflammatory pseudotumor accompanied with increased serum immunoglobulin G levels and autoimmune pancreatitis].

A 77-year-old man with increased serum immunoglobulin G levels and autoimmune pancreatitis was found to have a chest X-ray abnormality. The chest X-ray and CT films showed a mass shadow in the right lower lobe and lymphadenopathy. Since transbronchial tumor biopsy did not obtain diagnostic material, CT-guided cutting needle biopsy was performed. The microscopic findings showed plasma cells and lymphocytes infiltrating the pleura and alveolar interstitium. A diagnosis of inflammatory pseudotumor was suspected, but it was difficult to exclude malignancy. Therefore, wedge resection of the right l

Ultra-portable chest X-ray systems and AI-assisted interpretation tools for tuberculosis screening in India: A narrative review of emerging technologies and operational considerations.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health challenge in India, which continues to account for the highest global TB burden. Findings from the National TB Prevalence Survey highlighted a substantial proportion of asymptomatic and subclinical TB cases, emphasizing the limitations of symptom-based screening approaches and the need for more sensitive and accessible screening strategies. Recent advances in ultra-portable chest X-ray systems and artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted chest radiograph interpretation tools have created new opportunities for decentralized and point-of-care TB scree
