OBJECTIVE: To quantify the impact of long-standing vaccination programmes on notified cases in the Netherlands.
DESIGN: Estimates based on model projections of historical morbidity data.
METHOD: We collected and digitised previously unavailable monthly case notifications of diphtheria, poliomyelitis, mumps and rubella in the Netherlands over the period 1919-2015. Poisson regression models accounting for seasonality, multi-year cycles, secular trends and auto-correlation were fit to pre-vaccination periods. Cases averted were calculated as the difference between observed and expected cases ba

A dynamic deterministic simulation model was developed to determine the cost-effectiveness of different mass dog vaccination strategies against rabies in a dog population representative of a typical village on Flores Island. Cost-effectiveness was measured as public cost per averted dog-rabies case. Simulations started with the introduction of one infectious dog into a susceptible dog population of 399 dogs and subsequently ran for a period of 10 years. The base scenario represented a situation without any control intervention. Evaluated vaccination strategies were as follows: annual vaccinati

This hospital based surveillance study evaluates the effects of the rotavirus mass vaccination program, which was initiated in Austria in August 2007. Since then, incidence rates of rotavirus hospitalizations in children <15 years of age have decreased by 70% and 64% in 2010 and 2011 compared to the pre-vaccination era (2001-2005). Incidence rates were highest in children <90 days of age, highlighting the importance of the early start of active rotavirus immunization. In children between 2 and 3.5 years in 2011, who were in the second and third year after vaccination in the universal mass vacc

BACKGROUND: In India, children who are traveling during mass immunization campaigns for polio represent a substantial component of the total target population. These children are not easily accessible to health workers and may thus not receive vaccine. Vaccination activities at mass transit sites (such as major intersections, bus depots and train stations), can increase the proportion of children vaccinated but the effectiveness of these activities, and factors associated with their success, have not been rigorously evaluated.
METHODS: We assessed data from polio vaccination activities in Jyo

Administrative coverage data are commonly used to assess coverage of mass vaccination campaigns. These estimates are obtained by dividing the number of doses administered by the number of children of eligible age, usually at the health district level. This study used data from a cluster survey conducted in each of the 53 Burkina Faso health districts immediately after 1999 the National Immunization Days to assess whether administrative estimates correlated with those obtained through survey and whether the former identified districts that achieved suboptimal coverage as measured by cluster sur

During the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, local public health agencies were responsible for vaccinating a wide variety of communities. Dakota County Public Health (Dakota County, Minnesota) implemented a program that offered COVID-19 vaccines in a variety of settings, such as county public health buildings, community sites, in-home, mass vaccination clinics, and a mobile clinic unit. The purpose of this analysis is to compare the demographics of vaccinations administered at Dakota County COVID-19 vaccination clinics based on clinic site. More than half (52.5%) of vaccinations administered at mobile

INTRODUCTION: Despite some improvement in provision of safe drinking water, proper sanitation and hygiene promotion, cholera still remains a major public health problem in Malawi with outbreaks occurring almost every year since 1998. In response to 2014/2015 cholera outbreak, ministry of health and partners made a decision to assess the feasibility and acceptability of conducting a mass oral cholera vaccine (OCV) as an additional public health measure. This paper highlights the burden of the 2014/15 cholera outbreak, successes and challenges of OCV campaign conducted in March and April 2015.

BACKGROUND: During 2005-2012, surveillance in Maela refugee camp, Thailand, identified four cholera outbreaks, with rates up to 10.7 cases per 1000 refugees. In 2013, the Thailand Ministry of Public Health sponsored a two-dose oral cholera vaccine (OCV) campaign for the approximately 46,000 refugees living in Maela.
METHODS: We enumerated the target population (refugees living in Maela who are ≥1 year old and not pregnant) in a census three months before the campaign and issued barcoded OCV cards to each individual. We conducted the campaign using a fixed-post strategy during two eight-day ro

INTRODUCTION: Systemic safety surveillance is an essential component of vaccination programmes to elucidate the full safety profile of a vaccine and to detect previously unrecognized adverse reactions that might be related to new vaccines. This article summarizes the spontaneous adverse drug reactions (ADR) from approximately 12 million administered doses of the pandemic MF59-adjuvanted H1N1v vaccine (Focetria®, Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics) from the mass vaccination programmes in Europe.
METHODS: All ADR reports from October 2009 to March 2010 were included in the analyses and classifie

During the fourth quarter of 1997, a vaccination campaign using the meningococcal C polysaccharide vaccine was carried out in 14 autonomous regions of Spain. The remaining three regions did not participate. In the last quarter of the year 2000, a mass vaccination campaign using the meningococcal C conjugated vaccine was carried out in all regions. In the year 2001 the incidence decreased in all regions, although the decrease was greater in regions that did not vaccinate in 1997. In contrast, case fatality rates did not decrease. During 2001, the incidence rate of meningococcal C disease was st

INTRODUCTION: Brazil has been at the core of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the second-highest death toll worldwide. A mass vaccination campaign was initiated on May 16th, 2021, in Botucatu, Brazil, where two doses of ChadOx1-nCoV19 were offered 12 weeks apart to all 18-60- year-olds. This context offers a unique opportunity to study the vaccine safety during a mass campaign.
METHODS: The first and second doses of the vaccine were administered in May and August 2021, respectively. Emergency room (ER) and hospitalization records were obtained from the Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicin

Yellow fever vaccine, a live attenuated vaccine, is primarily administered to pregnant women during outbreaks. A qualitative study was conducted in pregnant women on the perception of yellow fever mass vaccination. In total, interviews with 20 women-13 semi-structured interviews and one focus group discussion with seven participants-were analyzed. This study showed that conflicting information about vaccine safety led to concern about miscarriage. Furthermore, it was believed that vaccination during gestation would concurrently immunize the fetus by transplacental antibody transfer. Consultati

Endemic and epidemic group A meningococcal meningitis remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa, despite the availability of the safe and inexpensive group A meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine, which is protective at all ages when administered as directed. Despite optimal therapy, meningococcal meningitis has a 10% fatality rate and at least 15% central nervous system damage. WHO's policy of epidemic containment prevents, at best, about 50% of cases and ignores endemic meningitis, which is estimated at 50,000 cases per year. The effectiveness of group A, C, W135,

The Cuban vaccine, first in the world with proven efficacy against group B-caused disease, is based on outer membrane proteins from B meningococci capable of inducing long-lasting and high-titered bactericidal antibodies in humans. This bactericidal activity has a wide spectrum against all pathogenic group B Neisseria meningitidis tested. A randomized, double-blind controlled trial of the vaccine efficacy was performed during 1987-1989 with 106,000 10-14 years old students from 197 boarding schools in seven provinces. The efficacy obtained was 83% (chi 2, p less than 0.002; Fischer exact, p le

BACKGROUND: From smallpox to poliomyelitis, halting contagion transmission through simultaneous mass vaccination is ubiquitous and often perceived as the only possible solution. But implementing mass vaccination campaigns in large populations within a short period poses many challenges. For example, in Arequipa, Peru, sweeping mass vaccination campaigns conducted yearly over a single weekend have failed to achieve the required 'herd immunity' to halt canine rabies transmission. Contrary to the global paradigm of a simultaneous campaign, the 2022 Arequipa rabies campaign was implemented at the

The risk of meningococcal transmission is increased with crowding and prolonged close proximity between people. There have been numerous invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) outbreaks associated with mass gatherings and other overcrowded situations, including cramped accommodation, such as student and military housing, and refugee camps. In these conditions, IMD outbreaks predominantly affect adolescents and young adults. In this narrative review, we examine the situation in India, where the burden of IMD-related complications is significant but the reported background incidence of IMD is low.
