Expression of an embryonic fibronectin splicing variant in human masseter muscle.

Fibronectin is an extracellular matrix protein that is a key constituent of all skeletal muscles. Its deposition increases in a number of pathological conditions, including some muscular dystrophies in which a progressive increase in lower-face height is often noted. It has been shown in other organ systems that increased deposition of fibronectin is associated with changes in the expression of differentially spliced isoforms of the molecule. This investigation documents the expression of mRNA coding for fibronectin and its splicing variants, EIIIA and EIIIB, in biopsies of masseter muscle fro

Masseter muscle spasm in children: implications of continuing the triggering anesthetic.

This retrospective study was undertaken to examine the management and outcome of children who developed isolated masseter muscle spasm (MMS) after the administration of intravenous succinylcholine during anesthetic induction. The inhalation anesthetics used for induction were continued in all of these cases. The medical records of 68 patients (male/female ratio, 1.7:1), identified from approximately 42,000 anesthetics given during the period 1980-1989, were reviewed. Fifty-seven children (2.3-12 yr old) were diagnosed as having isolated MMS, i.e., MMS without spasm of other muscles; 11 experie

Evaluation of masseter muscle thickness of mouth breathing patients using ultrasonography.

BACKGROUND: Chronic mouth breathing negatively affects the growth of the craniofacial complex and creates problems on the dental structures and adjacent skeletal muscle structures. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the possible effects of this situation on the muscles in the chewing system by evaluating the masseter muscle thickness in mouth-breathing individuals by ultrasonography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 50 patients (26 males and 24 females) between the ages of 18-65 years were included in the study and constituted the mouth breathing group, while a total of 50 patients (

The human masseter muscle revisited: First description of its coronoid part.

INTRODUCTION: The masseter muscle is considered to be bilayered, consisting of a superficial and a deep part. However, a few historical texts mention the possible existence of a third layer as well, but they are extremely inconsistent as to its position. Here we performed an anatomical study to clarify the presence and morphological characteristics of a distinct third layer of the masseter muscle. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We dissected 12 formaldehyde-fixed human cadaver heads, analysed CTs of 16 fresh cadavers, evaluated MR data from one living subject and examined histological sections using m

Masseter and temporalis muscle electromyography findings after lower third molar extraction.

BACKGROUND: The main clinical application of electromyography is to detect abnormalities in muscle function, to assess muscle activity for purposes of recruitment, and in the biomechanics of movement. OBJECTIVES: To analyze electromyography (EMG) findings for masticatory muscles during chewing following surgical extraction of lower third molars, and to determine any correlation between pain, inflammation, trismus, and the EMG data registered. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective study included 31 patients. Surface EMG was used to study masseter and temporalis muscle function before lower t

Transcriptome analysis of trigeminal ganglia following masseter muscle inflammation in rats.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain in masticatory muscles is a major medical problem. Although mechanisms underlying persistent pain in masticatory muscles are not fully understood, sensitization of nociceptive primary afferents following muscle inflammation or injury contributes to muscle hyperalgesia. It is well known that craniofacial muscle injury or inflammation induces regulation of multiple genes in trigeminal ganglia, which is associated with muscle hyperalgesia. However, overall transcriptional profiles within trigeminal ganglia following masseter inflammation have not yet been determined. In t

Masseter length determines muscle spindle reflex excitability during jaw-closing movements.

INTRODUCTION: The masticatory muscles are considered to be important determinants of facial form, but little is known of the muscle spindle reflex characteristics and their relationship, if any, to face height. The aim of this study was to determine whether spindle reflexes, evoked by mechanical stimulation of an incisor and recorded on the masseter muscle, correlated with different facial patterns. METHODS: Twenty-eight adult volunteers (16 women; ages, 19-38 years) underwent 2-N tap stimuli to their maxillary left central incisor during simulated mastication. Reflexes were recorded during l

Botulinum Toxin-Induced Parotitis: A Postoperative Complication Following Masseter Muscle Injection.

Botulinum toxin (BTX) injection is a common treatment for bruxism, but there is no literature on potential salivary gland complications. This paper presents a case of acute parotitis in a 60-year-old female following BTX injections to the masseter muscle. This case highlights the possible salivary gland complications after injection of BTX into the masticatory muscles. An electronic search of PubMed and Embase databases was conducted to create a literature review in order to delve into the etiology behind the presented case and suggest potential preventive measures to avoid salivary gland comp

Surgical Resolution of Bilateral Hypertrophy of Masseter Muscle Through Intraoral Approach.

Masseter muscle hypertrophy is an untypical anomaly with no definite cause and its diagnosis is easily completed through physical examination and imaging examinations. In some cases, patient may report signs and symptoms of well-localizated pain. However, it is generally asymptomatic and patient's chief complaint is about esthetic because of facial asymmetry. In this case, surgery is carefully indicated. The aim of this article is to report a case of a male patient with no painful and functional complaints but an important unease over his facial asymmetry. Patient underwent surgery involving b

Caffeine- or halothane-induced contractures of masseter muscle are similar to those of vastus muscle in normal humans.

BACKGROUND: Skinned fibers from normal human masseter muscle have greater caffeine and calcium sensitivity than skinned fibers from vastus muscle. We examined sensitivity to caffeine and halothane in fresh, cut muscle bundles (non-skinned) from human masseter muscle. METHODS: Masseter bundles (caffeine, n=25, halothane, n=19) excised from 10 humans under general anesthesia had tension measured in 37 degrees C baths during the addition of caffeine (0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 32 mM) or 3% halothane. Results were compared to those of our previous studies (1989, 1997, 25 patients) of vastus bundles (caffei

Temporal and masseter muscle evaluation by MRI provides information on muscle mass and quality in acromegaly patients.

PURPOSE: The impact of GH/IGF-1 levels on skeletal muscle in acromegaly is still controversial. Temporal (TMT) and masseter muscle (MMT) thickness has been recently demonstrated as a reliable measure of muscle mass. We aimed to investigate the relationship between TMT, MMT and clinical/biochemical characteristics in patients with acromegaly. METHODS: Single center retrospective longitudinal study including 69 patients with at least one available brain/sella turcica MRI and matched clinical data. TMT, MMT, and muscle fatty infiltration (modified Goutallier score) were evaluated in all patients

Proliferative Fasciitis/Myositis Involving the Facial Muscles Including the Masseter Muscle: A Rare Cause of Trismus.

BACKGROUND Proliferative fasciitis/myositis is a benign disease that can be treated conservatively. However, some patients are mistakenly treated surgically because of a misdiagnosis of the condition as a malignant tumor. CASE REPORT A 50-year-old Japanese man developed swelling in his left cheek 12 days before admission; he developed a fever and trismus 3 days later. He was admitted to our hospital because of worsening of his condition despite treatment with sitafloxacin for 5 days and needle-aspiration drainage. On admission, he had a fever of 38.1°C, swelling in his left cheek spreading to

Bruxism and Stress: Ultrasonographic Masseter Muscle Assessment and Salivary Melatonin-Cortisol Dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Bruxism is a parafunctional activity characterised by teeth grinding or clenching, often associated with stress and neurophysiological factors. Its aetiology is multifactorial, with recent studies emphasising neurotransmitters and hormonal imbalances, particularly melatonin and cortisol. This study assesses masseter muscle thickness using ultrasonography and examines the relationship between salivary melatonin and cortisol levels in bruxism. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the ultrasonographic characteristics of the masseter muscle in individuals with bruxism and investiga
