Solitary fibrous tumor of the masticator space - Report of a rare case.

The solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a potentially malignant spindle cell neoplasm of the mesenchymal origin that was originally described as a thoracic lesion originating from the pleural tissue. Recently, numerous extrapleural sites of origin have been described, also affecting the head and neck region. SFTs are benign in most cases, but 10%-15% of extrapleural SFTs show malignant behavior in the form of recurrent or metastatic disease. We present the case of a 25-year-old female who presented with an asymptomatic left-sided facial swelling of over three years. She had a diffuse swelling in t

Antimicrobial Effects of Mastic Extract Against Oral and Periodontal Pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Various antimicrobial agents are widely used in the therapy of oral inflammatory diseases. However, their side effects and the appearance of drug resistance justify research on natural antimicrobial agents to target oral pathogens that are safe for the host. In the present study, antimicrobial properties of mastic extract on commensal and pathogenic oral bacteria, as well as its possible cytotoxic effect toward cells of epithelial and mesenchymal origin, were evaluated and compared with the common antimicrobial agents hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX). Influence of two masticating conditions on assessment of movement path stability.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to clarify whether differences in masticating conditions affected masticatory path stabilities of healthy subjects and TMD patients. METHODS: Twenty healthy female subjects as the healthy group, and 20 female Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) patients as the TMD group, were selected. Incisal point movement of during mastication of both masticating condition 1 (mc1; crispy bread chewed until swallowing on the free side) and masticating condition 2 (mc2; softened chewing-gum chewed for 20s on the habitual side) were recorded by MKG. As for mc1, out of all

[Effect of unilateral mastication on the remodeling of the glenoid fossae in Wistar rats].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of unilateral mastication on glenoid fossae by means of animal experiment. METHODS: An animal model of unilateral mastication was established by extracting right mandibular molars of Wistar rats. The rats were sacrificed in different period to examine the location changes of glenoid fossae through sagittal and horizontal plane. RESULTS: The anterior points of glenoid fossae in non-masticatory side of experimental groups were more anterior than those in masticatory sides. The anterior points of the glenoid fossae of non-masticatory sides in experimental gr

Ultrasonographic assessment of the effects of unilateral mastication on the temporal and masseter muscles.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Unilateral mastication is a complex problem affecting the masticatory muscles. Quantitative evaluation of the contraction efficiency of the muscles to determine what effect unilateral mastication has on them is lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to investigate the differences in masseter and anterior temporal muscle thickness and elastography values between the masticatory and nonmasticatory sides in patients with unilateral mastication habits using ultrasonographic evaluation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-five individuals with unilateral masticati

Bilateral Masticator Space Metastasis of Breast Cancer Mimicking Abscess.

Metastasis to the masticator space and mandible is very rare. The most common origin in women is breast cancer. Cystic metastases may radiologically mimic abscess. Definitive diagnosis can be made histopathologically. The prognosis of these patients is very poor and early diagnosis is important. Therefore, metastasis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of oral lesions.

Could mastication modify the shape of the orbit? A scannographic study in humans.

PURPOSE: Since prehistory, changes of the facial skeleton have been related to the modification of diet. More recent studies have shown changes in the morphology of the mandible and maxilla due to variations of strain during mastication. The temporal muscle (TM) is a strong masticatory muscle, with its insertions extending through the temporal fossa. Our objective is to observe the relations between the TM and the lateral orbital wall (LOW) which could indicate an influence of mastication on the shape of the LOW. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study using 100 CT scans. The length of th

Necrotizing fasciitis of the masticator space with osteomyelitis of the mandible in an edentulous patient.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly progressive necrosis of the subcutaneous tissue and fascia, caused by bacterial infection. Usually presenting in the extremities, trunk, or perineum, it is uncommon in the craniofacial or cervical area. Cervicofacial NF is a potentially fatal infection, which should be managed with early detection and intervention. Most cases have a primary odontogenic source of infection, especially when the masticator space is involved. We report a case of masticator space NF that developed without odontogenic origin in a 78-year old female who was treated with prompt

The effect of unilateral lingual nerve injury on the kinematics of mastication in pigs.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the effect of unilateral lingual sensory loss on the spatial and temporal dynamics of jaw movements during pig chewing. DESIGN: X-ray Reconstruction of Moving Morphology (XROMM) was used to reconstruct the 3-dimensional jaw movements of 6 pigs during chewing before and after complete unilateral lingual nerve transection. The effect of the transection were evaluated at the temporal and spatial level using Multiple Analysis of Variance. Temporal variables include gape cycle and phase durations, and the corresponding relative phase durations. Spatial variables inc

Association between Mastication, the Hippocampus, and the HPA Axis: A Comprehensive Review.

Mastication is mainly involved in food intake and nutrient digestion with the aid of teeth. Mastication is also important for preserving and promoting general health, including hippocampus-dependent cognition. Both animal and human studies indicate that mastication influences hippocampal functions through the end product of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, glucocorticoid (GC). Epidemiologic studies suggest that masticatory dysfunction in aged individuals, such as that resulting from tooth loss and periodontitis, acting as a source of chronic stress, activates the HPA axis, leadin

Fractures of the posterolateral maxillary sinus: a masticator space blowout injury?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Segmental, depressed fractures of the posterolateral maxillary sinus may occur as a result of trauma to the masticator space, previously described in association with mandibular fractures. The authors hypothesize that the fracture is due to a transient increase in pressure in the masticator space (blow out) and therefore should be seen in association with other regional fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Injuries of the masticator space were retrospectively identified by searching the imaging database from January 2014 to November 2014 for keywords that would identify r

Cysticercosis involving muscle of mastication: a review and report of two cases.

Cysticercosis is a parasitic infection caused by the larval stages of the parasitic cestode, Taenia solium. It is a common disease in developing countries where it is also endemic. The central nervous system (CNS) is the most important primary site of infection and the disease can present with solitary or multiple space occupying lesions. Cases of cysticercosis presenting as isolated muscle mass (pseudotumours) without involvement of the CNS have also been recently described in the literature. We present two cases who presented to us with pain, swelling, and tenderness involving the temporalis

Juvenile pleomorphic adenoma of masticator space: The first case report.

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA), also called benign mixed tumor, is the most common tumor of the salivary glands. About 90% of these tumors occur in the parotid gland and 10% in the minor salivary glands. Juvenile PAs are uncommon and about 5-10% of minor salivary gland PA affects patients aged 20 years and under. The most common sites of PA of the minor salivary glands are the palate followed by lips and cheek. Other rare reported sites include the throat, floor of the mouth, tongue, tonsil, pharynx, retromolar area and nasal cavity. The masticator space is a deep facial space with a complex anatomi

A case of soft tissue myoepithelial tumor arising in masticator space.

Soft tissue myoepithelial tumors of the head and neck region are very rare, and only one case of soft tissue myoepithelial tumor occurring in the masticator space has been reported in the world literature. A case of soft tissue myoepithelial tumor with benign histomorphology, but with an invasive growth pattern, occurred in the masticator space of a 46-year- old male patient. Magnetic resonance imaging of paranasal sinus/nasopharynx revealed a well-defined, lobulated heterogeneous mass with high signal intensity and dense calcification in the masticator space between the left mandible ramus an

Disseminated septicaemic melioidosis: an unusual presentation of masticator space infection.

Melioidosis is an infectious disease caused by a saprophytic bacterium, Burkholderia pseudomallei. It is endemic to Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. The spectrum of melioidosis in humans varies from sub-clinical to overwhelming protean manifestations resembling other acute and chronic bacterial infections. Disseminated septicaemia melioidosis presenting as a masticator space infection is reported here. This is germane to those treating diabetic patients with deep neck infections living in, or having visited, areas endemic for B. pseudomallei.

Bilateral lung abscess associated with a severe masticator space infection.

The clinician should be constantly aware of the danger of aspiration in cases of prolonged sepsis with profuse suppuration. In such cases, it might be wiser to establish dependent extraoral drainage, rather than relying solely on intraoral means. The chances of aspirating septic material and the resultant occurrence of pulmonary abscesses will be lessened.
