Barriers and facilitators to maternal, newborn, and child health service utilization among internally displaced populations in Somalia.

BACKGROUND: Internally displaced populations (IDPs) in Somalia face a disproportionate burden of poor maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) outcomes due to conflict, recurrent displacement, poverty, and weak health systems. Evidence on the barriers and facilitators influencing MNCH service utilization in these settings remains fragmented. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize the available evidence on barriers and facilitators affecting utilization of MNCH services among IDPs in Somalia, with a focus on antenatal care, skilled delivery, postnatal care, immunization, and care-seeking for childhood ill

Prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of tuberculosis in children and mothers: evidence for action for maternal, neonatal, and child health services.

Tuberculosis affected an estimated 8.8 million people and caused 1.4 million deaths globally in 2010, including a half-million women and at least 64 000 children. It also results in nearly 10 million cumulative orphans due to parental deaths. Moreover, it causes 6%-15% of all maternal mortality, which increases to 15%-34% if only indirect causes are considered. Increasingly, more women with tuberculosis are notified than men in settings with a high prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and maternal tuberculosis increases the vertical transmission of HIV. Tuberculosis prevention, di

The impact of health policies on immigrant women's experiences of maternal health services in the United Kingdom and Canada: A qualitative systematic review and meta-synthesis.

The perinatal period is a critical time for the health of women, during which delays or limited access to care can have serious consequences. For immigrant women, this period is marked by multiple barriers exacerbated by restrictive policies. With rising immigration to countries such as the UK and Canada, we examined immigrant women's experiences of maternal healthcare. We conducted a Boolean search across four databases (Medline, Embase, CINAHL, Global Health) from January 2000 to November 10, 2025. We identified thirty-three eligible studies, involving over 1000 migrant women of various immi

Measuring supply-side service disruption: a systematic review of the methods for measuring disruption in the context of maternal and newborn health services in low and middle-income settings.

OBJECTIVES: During the COVID-19 pandemic, most essential services experienced some level of disruption. Disruption in LMICs was more severe than in HICs. Early reports suggested that services for maternal and newborn health were disproportionately affected, raising concerns about health equity. Most disruption indicators measure demand-side disruption, or they conflate demand-side and supply-side disruption. There is currently no published guidance on measuring supply-side disruption. The primary objective of this review was to identify methods and approaches used to measure supply-side servic

Toward Improving Accessibility of Point-of-Care Diagnostic Services for Maternal and Child Health in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

Point-of-care (POC) testing can improve health care provision in settings with limited access to health care services. Access to POC diagnostic services has shown potential to alleviate some diagnostic challenges and delays associated with laboratory-based methods in low- and middle-income countries. Improving accessibility to POC testing (POCT) services during antenatal and perinatal care is among the global health priorities to improve maternal and child health. This review provides insights on the availability of POC testing designed for diagnosing HIV, syphilis, and malaria in pregnancy to

Midwife-led pandemic telemedicine services for maternal health and gender-based violence screening in Bangladesh: an implementation research case study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted maternal and newborn health services in Bangladesh, exacerbating the large gaps in service utilization that existed prior to the pandemic. As part of its response, Bangladesh initiated remote antenatal and postnatal care telemedicine services led by midwives in 36 sub-district hospitals across five of Bangladesh's 64 districts. Gender-based violence screening and referral were integrated into the service to address a reported rise in violence following the country's pandemic lockdown. METHODS: Mixed-methods implementation research was used to develo
