Case series: Computed tomography (CT) demonstrates lacrimal canal involvement in koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) with maxillary incisor dental disease.

Dental disease is common in wild and captive koalas. Effective treatments are limited and dental disease may not be recognised until it is quite severe. We describe the appearance of varying severities of dental disease on computed tomography (CT) images in a case series of six koalas. This case series demonstrates the use of CT to detect both mild and severe dental disease in koalas. The study also documents the normal CT appearance of the nasolacrimal duct in the koala. The only clinical abnormality in koalas with the mildest dental disease was ocular discharge. Computed tomography findings

Prevalence of mucosal abnormalities of the maxillary sinus and their relationship to dental disease in panoramic radiography: results from the Health 2000 Health Examination Survey.

BACKGROUND: Mucosal thickening and mucosal antral cyst (MAC) in the maxillary sinus are incidental findings in panoramic radiographs. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 5021 participants in a nationally representative Health 2000 Health Examination Survey using panoramic radiography. RESULTS: The prevalence of mucosal thickening was 12% and of MACs 7%, both being twice as frequent in men as in women. Mucosal thickening was most common in the 40- to 49-year age group, whereas MACs were most often seen in younger age groups. Pathologic dental findings and root canal treatments were signifi

Dissemination of wild-type and gC-, gE-and gI-deleted mutants of Aujeszky's disease virus in the maxillary nerve and trigeminal ganglion of pigs after intranasal inoculation.

Aujeszky's disease virus (ADV) is a well known neurotropic virus in pigs. In the present study the mechanism of spread of ADV along the maxillary nerve and the role of the viral envelope glycoproteins gC, gE and gI in this process was examined in pigs. The Ka parental strain of ADV and its gC-, gE- and gI-deleted mutants were inoculated intranasally in pigs, after which virus dissemination in the maxillary nerve and the trigeminal ganglion was monitored at time intervals by means of virus isolation. The parental strain was isolated from both the nasal mucosa and the trigeminal ganglion at 21 h

Eosinophil fungal rhinosinusitis caused by Fusarium infection secondary to odontogenic maxillary sinus disease: when collaboration between otolaryngologist and allergologist leads to the correct diagnosis and therapy.

Rhinitis and sinusitis usually coexist and are concurrent in most individuals; thus, the correct terminology is now "rhinosinusitis". On the basis of numerous causative factors, often co-existing in the same patient, the diagnosis of rhinosinusitis is also made by a wide variety of practitioners (allergologists, otolaryngologists, pulmonologists, primary care physicians, paediatricians, and many others). Approximately 5-15% of the population suffers from chronic rhinosinusitis, and in 10-12% of them, it is of dental origin. The treatment of odontogenic maxillary sinus disease is directed to th

Management of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) associated mucormycosis with palatal ulcer, dental pain and anterior maxillary teeth mobility- A clinical dilemma of Covid 19 pandemic in India.

Mucormycosis represents a group of life-threatening infections caused by fungi of the order mucorales of subphylum mucormycotina. Due to high vascularity, the maxilla rarely undergoes necrosis. Mucormycosis is an opportunistic fulminant fungal infection, which mainly infects immune-compromised patients. Due to the inhalation of fungal spores, the infection may begin in the nose and paranasal sinuses. Necrosis of hard and soft tissues is due to thrombosis of arteries, which is caused by the inhalation of fungal spores. We report a case of maxillary necrosis by mucormycosis in a COVID-19-recover

A case report of acute pyelonephritis secondary to maxillary sinusitis caused by implant displacement.

BACKGROUND: With the advancement of dental implant technology, implant placement in the maxillary posterior region has become a primary method for restoring missing teeth. However, due to factors such as significant maxillary sinus pneumatization and insufficient alveolar bone volume, implant displacement into the maxillary sinus occasionally occurs. Retained implants in the maxillary sinus may induce maxillary sinusitis and secondary systemic diseases such as pyelonephritis. The relevance of which has not yet been fully recognized and thoroughly studied. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old male

Sinus pathology and anatomy in relation to complications in lateral window sinus augmentation.

Antral pathoses and anatomical variations increase the risk of surgical complications during a lateral window sinus augmentation procedure. Therefore, an understanding of maxillary sinus diseases and anatomies is imperative. In the first part of this article, common sinus diseases will be reviewed, which include acute/chronic rhinosinusitis, mucoceles, pseudocysts, retention cysts, and odontogenic diseases of the maxillary sinus. In addition, a treatment strategy will be proposed toward the management of these antral diseases. In the second part, anatomical variations of the maxillary sinus, f

Chronic maxillary sinusitis masquerading as a maxillary sinus neoplasm: A case report.

Chronic inflammatory diseases of the maxillary sinus can present well-defined, expansile radiolucent features, necessitating differential diagnosis from true neoplasms. Pleomorphic adenoma, although rare, is one of the neoplasms included in the list of differential diagnoses, and it may occasionally arise in the maxillary sinus. However, inflammatory conditions such as mucoceles, postoperative maxillary cysts and chronic bacterial maxillary sinusitis can also cause thinning and expansion of the sinus walls due to prolonged obstruction. The present study describes a case of chronic maxillary si
