BACKGROUND: Ameloblastic fibrosarcoma (AFS) is a rare odontogenic neoplasm of the jaw that usually arises de novo or through a malignant change in the mesenchymal component of a preexisting or recurrent benign fibroma. The majority of AFS cases reported in the literature arise in the mandible.
CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old male presented with an asymptomatic left maxillary mass that on imaging was found to be effacing most of his maxillary sinus. He underwent a left maxillectomy with free-flap reconstruction and adjuvant radiotherapy to the tumor bed.
CONCLUSION: Wide local excision remains the

Introduction Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a rare benign neoplasm in the nasopharynx. The tumor tends to be locally aggressive and is typically seen in adolescent boys. Extranasopharyngeal angiofibromas have been reported sporadically in the literature. They most commonly originate from the maxillary sinus. Objectives A 26-year-old woman was referred to our clinic with intermittent epistaxis from the right nasal passage for the previous 2 months. Maxillofacial magnetic resonance imaging showed a lobular, contoured mass originating from the right inferior turbinate and hanging in the

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare and aggressive form of mature B cell neoplasms almost exclusively identified in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The small number of HIV-negative PBL cases reported in the literature to date is composed of single case reports and small case series which characteristically are present involving the oral cavity mucosa or gingiva. We present a 72-year-old HIV-negative Australian patient without any cause of immunodeficiency, with an isolated left maxillary sinus PBL.

Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma is an extremely rare malignancy of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity. It is of unknown etiology, and occurs more commonly in the elderly men, with a routinely shown aggressive behavior and poor prognosis for survival. Radiographically, it looks like severe osteomyelitis. Histopathologic study is essential to confirm diagnosis, and the undifferentiated histologic appearance often necessitates immunohistochemical studies for differentiation from other high-grade neoplasms. We present an 83-year-old man complaining of pain and unilateral swelling on the l

Ewing's sarcoma (ES) is a malignant, small-round-cell neoplasm that normally affects the long bones of the limbs or the pelvis. Primary orbital ES of the skull has been considered extremely rare. We describe the case of a 19-year-old female patient with primary ES originating from the inferior orbital rime and, shortly after tumor resection, local recurrence to the maxillary sinus.

Neurilemmoma has been defined as a benign, encapsulated neoplasm that arises in the nerve fiber. It originates from the proliferation of Schwann cells in the perineurium causing displacement and compression of the adjacent nerve. This neoplasm is composed primarily of Schwann cells in a poorly collagenized stroma. It can occur in any age group. Neurilemmoma occurs all over the body including the head and neck region. In the head and neck region, 25%-40% of schwannoma cases have been reported. Occurrences of intraoral schwannomas are rare with reported prevalence being 1%. In the present articl

Ameloblastoma is characterized histologically by evidence of ameloblastic differentiation and molecularly by MAPK pathway alterations, most frequently BRAFV600E mutation and RAS mutations, as well as by SMO mutations. This mutational profile is present across all histologic variants, including those occasionally lacking overt histologic evidence of ameloblastic differentiation, such as desmoplastic ameloblastoma and granular cell ameloblastoma. Recently, we have come across 4 cases of maxillary ameloblastoma demonstrating peculiar histologic features not accounted for by recognized histologic

Mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MECs) are a common neoplasm of the minor salivary glands. However, nasopharyngeal MECs are an extremely rare entity. We describe herein our experience in the resection of a nasopharyngeal MEC using the maxillary swing approach (MSA). A 42-year-old man was referred to our institute complaining of a feeling of fullness in his left ear. The tumor was found to localized in the nasopharynx. The ragiological findings showed a solid, 30 x 27 x 26mm tumor lying on the lateral wall of the nasopharynx. The histological examination revealed MEC. The tumor was removed with maxil

Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/PNET) family of tumors is an uncommon group of malignant neoplasms that may present in both skeletal and extraskeletal sites. PNET outside the central nervous system is called peripheral PNET (pPNET) developing from migrating embryonal cells of the neural crest. Very few cases of pPNET of the maxilla are reported in English literature. These tumors may be difficult to diagnose due to their primitive morphology. These tumors occur predominantly in infancy or early childhood. The occurrence of extraskeletal ES/PNET in the maxillary sinus in an

Odontogenic myxoma is a benign, rare neoplasm of mesenchymal origin comprising of 3%-6% of all odontogenic tumors. Odontogenic myxoma occurs more commonly in the second and third decade and is more commonly seen in mandible compared with maxilla but behaves more aggressively in maxilla as it spreads through the maxillary antrum. It is usually associated with a painless swelling without any symptoms. The radiographic features are similar to other odontogenic tumors, and hence, it leads to diagnostic dilemma. Therefore, thorough knowledge regarding clinical, radiographical, and histopathological

Epithelioid sarcoma (ES) is a rare histological type of soft tissue sarcoma presenting as a subcutaneous or deep dermal mass in the distal extremities of young adults. Recently, a more aggressive, so called 'proximal-type' ES has been described. The literature is limited on the clinical features and management of ES originating in the head and neck area. We here report a case of 16-year-old female who initially presented with progressive swelling and pain in the left cheek. On physical and radiographic examination, a malignant neoplasm was found in the left maxillary sinus with bony invasion.

Multiple myeloma is a malignant neoplasm of plasma cells characterized by proliferation of a single clone of abnormal immunoglobulin-secreting plasma cells. Since the amount of hemopoietic bone marrow is decreased in the maxilla, oral manifestations of multiple myeloma are less common in the maxilla than in the mandible. We report the case of 33-year-old Japanese man who presented with a mass in the right maxillary alveolar region. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance images showed a soft tissue mass in the right maxilla eroding the anterior and lateral walls of the maxillary sinus and e

Introduction Squamous cell carcinoma arising at the maxillary sinus is a rare neoplasm, characterized by an aggressive growth pattern and glooming prognosis. The proximity of the maxillary sinus with complex anatomical structures such as the eye, skull base, infratemporal fossa, pterygomaxillary fossa, nasal cavities, and ethmoid sinuses makes the surgical treatment of tumors infiltrating into these structures very challenging. The study's objective was to investigate the prognostic factors of survival and maxillary sinus SCC treatment outcomes. Methods We did a retrospective analysis of patie

BACKGROUND: In AIDS patients who present with an oral neoplasm, Kaposi sarcoma is the tumor most frequently encountered, comprising 50% to 80% of all tumor occurrences. However, oral Kaposi sarcoma associated with erosion of underlying bone is a relatively rare finding. This report and review of the literature documents a case of AIDS-related oral Kaposi sarcoma exhibiting severe bilateral erosion of the maxillary alveolar ridges.
METHODS: An HIV-seropositive male with extensive maxillary Kaposi sarcoma and associated bilateral alveolar bone erosion presented for dental evaluation subsequent

The present study consists of a clinical and histopathological analysis of those cases which were diagnosed as multiple primary malignant neoplasms of the oral-maxillofacial region and the other organs. 9 patients of those multiple primary malignant neoplasms out of 261 patients of malignant neoplasms in the oral-maxillofacial region, who visited in out department from 1975 to 1986, were detected. 3.4% of the incidence rate was calculated. All the cases were male, and these included each 1 case of triple and quadruple. 7 cases were detected prior in the oral-maxillofacial region to the other o

On the basis of 324 cases of maxillary tumours, the authors review the classification of these neoplasms. The most frequent tumours are benign epithelial odontogenic tumours, which represent 55% of all tumours. The most common of these tumours is the ameloblastoma, followed by the odontomas. Most of the tumours of non-dental origin are benign (72% of this group). Amongst the malignant tumours, osteosarcomas are much more common than chondrosarcomas. The authors also discuss the various types of cyst and their respective relative frequency.

Osteoma represents the most common benign neoplasm of the nose and paranasal sinuses. The etiology of osteomas is uncertain and the majority occur in the frontal. ethmoid, and maxillary sinuses in that order. We present a 14-year-old male with a large frontoethmoid osteoma that required frontal sinus cranialization and pericranial bone graft reconstruction following removal. The osteoma recurred 6 months postoperatively and was excised. Treatment alternatives and a review of the literature are presented.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary sinuses may present a wide spectrum of anatomical variations and pathological lesions whose recognition is mandatory for the clinician, especially prior to any surgical intervention in the area, such as in cases of sinus floor elevation. The goal of this study was the evaluation, mapping and prevalence of sinus anatomical variants and pathoses in Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scans of dental patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 660 CBCT examinations of adult patients involving both sinuses were obtained (between 2017 and 2023) and analyzed. The following anatomic varia
