The role of the maxillary sinus on the voice.

The objective of the study was to determine the effect of the maxillary sinus on the voice. The prospective study was conducted at an academic secondary referral center. A prospective chart review of 43 patients (17 males, 26 females) who conducted a voice recording and survey before and 3 months after middle meatal antrostomy whose lesion was confined to the maxillary sinus. Subjective voice changes were surveyed using a questionnaire. After phonation [∧m ma: the Korean pronunciation of 'mother'], [Nu Na: the Korean pronunciation of 'sister'], we analyzed the nasal consonant [m] of [∧m ma] an

[Diseases of the maxillary sinus: an overview].

Because of the intimate relationship between the maxillary teeth and the maxillary sinus, it is no surprise that odontogenic infections, odontogenic cysts and tumours which have their origin in the mucosa and the bone of the maxilla may extend into the maxillary sinus and, occasionally, into the nasal cavity. Diseases of the maxillary sinus can also extend into the oral cavity and can cause symptoms that mimic those of odontogenic diseases. Important diseases of the maxillary sinus are maxillary sinusitis, oroantral communications, antroliths, cysts and neoplasms.

Juvenile angiofibroma of the maxillary sinus.

Juvenile angiofibromas are benign fibro-vascular tumours of the nasopharynx that develop in prepubertal and adolescent males. Typical symptoms are longstanding unilateral nasal obstruction occasionally followed by epistaxes and frequent severe intraoperative haemorrhage of the discovered mass. We report the case of a 14-year-old boy histologically diagnosed with a juvenile angiofibroma in spite of the atypical localisation of the polyploid mass of the left maxillary sinus.

Cholesterol granuloma of the maxillary sinus.

INTRODUCTION: Cholesterol granuloma (CG) can be found in several areas of the body. Maxillary sinus localization is considered rare. CASE REPORT: A 37-year-old male presented with acute febrile sinusitis. Nasal endoscopy showed a nasal polyp at the middle meatus. Computed Tomography (CT scan) of the sinus showed complete opacity of the right maxillary sinus without calcification and partial opacification of frontal and ethmoidal sinuses. Functional endoscopic sinus approach was performed. Marsupialization of the cyst which a brownish fluid, which evoked the diagnosis of cholesterol granuloma.

Intraosseous anastomosis in the maxillary sinus.

AIM: During sinus-lift surgery, certain intra-osseous vessels may be accidentally cut and this cause bleeding complications in approximately 20% of osteotomies. Therefore, understanding vascular details of the maxilla is very important for the surgeon. Here, we have given an anatomical overview of maxillary sinus vascularization through anatomical dissection. We have analyzed the distribution, localization and distance from the alveolar ridge of intraosseous branches of the maxillary artery found during sinus lift surgery. METHODS: Fifty-six maxillary bone doors were made bilaterally in twent

Heterotopic ossification in the maxillary sinus.

We report a case of heterotopic ossification of the maxillary sinus in a 30-year-old female who was treated surgically in our department. Heterotopic ossification (HO) refers to the formation of mature lamellar bone in nonosseous tissues. We present the radiographic and computed tomographic appearance, and discuss the surgical treatment, histopathologic results, and differential diagnosis. To the best of our knowledge, no other case of HO of the maxillary sinus has been reported yet.

Ameloblastic carcinoma of the maxillary sinus.

Ameloblastic carcinoma is a very rare malignant odontogenic neoplasm of the mandible and maxilla, accounting for some 66 reported cases. The case of a 68-year-old man who presented a fistula with orosinus communication of 14-year duration that, after anti-aggregant therapy, began bleeding is reported. The initial microscopic evaluation of the biopsy and radiographic findings were consistent with benign peripheral ameloblastoma without cellular atypia and extensive fields of acantomatous pattern, but immunohistochemical investigation found strong positivity for Bcl-2, cytokeratins CAM 5 and 6,

Extramedullary plasmacytoma in the maxillary sinus.

Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare malignant plasma cell tumour. We report an extremely aggressive case of extramedullary plasmacytoma of the right maxillary sinus, which had metastasised to the brain and rib. A 56-year-old man presented with recurrent epistaxis and acute anaemia. Nasendoscopy revealed a medialised medial wall of the right maxilla and a mass occupying the whole nasopharynx. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a right maxillary tumour with extension to the ipsilateral nasal cavity, nasopharynx, right sphenoid and ethmoidal sinuses. There was an extra-axial brain metastasis.

Organizing hematoma of the maxillary sinus.

OBJECTIVE: The study aims to elucidate the clinical features and surgical results of OHMS (organizing hematoma of the maxillary sinus). STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We performed a chart review of 20 patients undergoing surgery for maxillary sinus lesions and pathologically diagnosed with OHMS between January 1990 and December 2005. RESULTS: The most common complaint was frequent epistaxis (70%). Paranasal CT scans showed unilateral expansile maxillary opacification, heterogeneous enhancement, bony destruction (25%), and focal calcification (15%). Treatment consisted of a sublabial approach comb

Ameloblastic fibroma of the maxillary sinus.

Ameloblastic fibroma is a rare true mixed tumor of odontogenic origin with both mesenchymal and ectodermal components. It usually arises from the mandibular dentition and presents in the second decade of life. It is a benign slow growing tumor that is less infiltrative than an ameloblastoma but tends to expand bone. It infrequently involves the maxilla and hence the management of these tumors in that region is controversial. The goal of therapy is to avoid cosmetic deformity without compromising on tumor eradication. We present the tenth reported case of this type of tumor in the maxilla, and

Primary neuroblastoma of the maxillary sinus.

Although neuroblastoma is the most common of extracranial solid tumors of childhood and infancy, we report the first case of an isolated neuroblastoma of a paranasal sinus. A 15-year-old girl with a right maxillary sinus mass was asymptomatic except for persistent epiphora. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans showed that the mass extended into the nasal cavity, encroached on the lamina papyracea, and obstructed the nasofrontal duct. An extensive workup revealed no evidence of systemic disease. The patient underwent right craniofacial resection. Immunohistochemistry and ele

Cholesterol granuloma of the maxillary sinus.

Cholesterol granuloma is usually associated with chronic middle ear disease and is common in the mastoid antrum and air cells of the temporal bone. It has also been reported in other parts of the skull, such as the frontal and maxillary sinuses and orbit. Cholesterol granuloma is rare in the paranasal sinuses. We report a new case of cholesterol granuloma in the maxillary sinus of a 38-year-old man who underwent surgical excision. We also review the literature and discuss the mechanism of development for this lesion. The resected specimen showed fragments of respiratory mucosa with cholesterol

Dermoid cyst of the maxillary sinus.

Dermoid cysts are rare developmental teratomatous lesions composed of ectodermally derived stratified squamous epithelium and mesodermally derived skin adnexal structures. As part of the teratomatous lesion group, dermoid cysts are related to teratoid cysts, true teratomas, and epignathi. Although several theories have been postulated, the pathogenesis of dermoid cysts, and teratomatous lesions in general, is unclear. Most commonly affecting sites within the head and neck, dermoid cysts may be found in the frontotemporal/lateral brow area, central nasal area, oral cavity, lateral neck, and oth

Infantile schwannoma of the maxillary sinus.

A rare case of a 5-year-old female with schwannoma of the maxillary sinus is presented. She had complained of painless swelling of the left cheek and hard palate for a duration of one year. Preoperatively, a CT scan strongly suggested it to be a maxillary cyst with an erupted tooth rather than neoplasm. The tumour was completely removed after embolization of the left internal maxillary artery. The tumour was composed of spindle cells in a palisading pattern and intercellular collagenous fibres. Mitotic figures and atypical nuclei were not observed. Immunohistochemically, the majority of the ce

Postoperative mucoceles of the maxillary sinus.

Apparently, the incidence of postoperative maxillary sinus mucoceles is greater in Japan than in the Western world. Between 1967 and 1976 at the Tokyo Medical and Dental University Hospital, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, 132 patients had the diagnosis of mucoceles of the maxillary sinus. Of these patients, 131 (99%) had histories of previous maxillary sinus surgery. A number of etiologic mechanisms are probably involved in producing these mucoceles.
