Patient. A 68-year-old man was operated on for squamous cell carcinoma (T3N3M0) of the maxilla creating the hemimaxillary surgical defect on right side. The remaining arch was completely edentulous. There was remarkable limitation in the oral opening with reduced perimeter of the oral cavity due to radiation and surgical scar contracture. This article describes prosthetic rehabilitation by modifying the design of the obturator and achieving the retention with dental implant. Discussion. Severe limitation in the oral opening may occur in clinical situations following the postsurgical management

Bilateral maxillectomy is known to have serious esthetic and functional consequences. The retention and support of a maxillary obturator prosthesis in these patients is particularly challenging. Surgical placement of implants is also challenging because of the lack of available bone. Therefore, implant placement into remote sites such as zygoma has been advocated. Very few articles in the literature have discussed the use of pterygoid/pterygomaxillary implants in patients undergoing maxillectomy. This case report describes the maxillofacial rehabilitation of an elderly man who underwent a bila

Definitive radiotherapy is an effective treatment for early-stage lip cancer. The goal of radiotherapy is to irradiate the cancer site effectively while protecting healthy surrounding tissue from the adverse effects of radiation. To this end, radiotherapy prostheses have been widely and effectively used. A maxillofacial prosthodontist working in collaboration with a radiation oncologist can create a custom-made radiotherapy prosthesis that minimizes adverse effects. This report demonstrates the successful use of spacers in external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy in consideration of the pa

The patient, a 72-year-old edentulous man, had an extensive maxillofacial defect caused by treatment of the maxillary cartinoma. As his left maxillary and zygomatic bone, a portion of the soft palate, orbital cavity contents and soft tissues of the cheek had been excised, his face was ugly, and his speech and eating were extremely poor. For this patient, first of all, plastic surgeons reconstructed the cheek and palate using deltopectral flap. Secondly, dentists prepared a facial prosthesis and a set of complete dentures. Four months after prosthetic treatment, plastic surgeons corrected the l

BACKGROUND: Restoration of speech after surgical resection for oropharyngeal cancer traditionally includes maxillofacial prosthetic intervention. Relatively few publications with objective speech outcomes exist. The purpose of this study was to evaluate speech outcome relative to the size of the surgical defect, the type of speech prosthesis, and the height and position of the speech bulb in relation to the posterior pharyngeal wall in the nasopharynx.
METHODS: Fifty-five patients treated at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Dental Service who underwent ablative cancer therapy were e

Carbon ion radiotherapy, a form of charged particle radiotherapy that has been used to treat various inoperable and radio-resistant tumors, has been associated with less severe late effects than conventional radiotherapy. A 63-year-old woman with a soft palate defect received carbon ion radiotherapy (total dose: 64 Gray equivalents). Several late effects were observed, and osteoradionecrosis was observed not only on the tumor side but also on the other side and gradually expanded during maxillofacial prosthetic rehabilitation. While the definitive prosthesis improved her speech and eating abil

Maxillofacial subunit reconstruction using vascularized fibula free flap and endosseous implants is a complex and exciting topic. Use of this technique has profoundly improved patients' function, form, and quality of life. This article outlines the goals and requirements of reconstruction and patient selection. Current data are examined and issues related to flap selection, irradiation, primary versus secondary implant placement, timing and type of implants, use of virtual surgical planning, soft-tissue management, and prosthesis selection fabrication are discussed. Careful planning, communica

In the wide variety of maxillofacial deformities resulting from congenital malformation, trauma, or excision of malignant tissue, restoration of function and of facial form is achieved by the replacement of missing soft tissue, repositioning of displaced bone, bone grafting of osseous defects, and restoration of adequate contour. In these cases, the surgeon and prosthodontist must work hand in hand. Prostheses may be temporary or permanent, depending on the extent of deformity, the age of the patient, and the long-term needs. Prostheses can be made from various materials, including methyl meth

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Tumors of the soft palate and the adjacent tissues often create considerable soft palate defects that are challenging for the maxillofacial prosthodontist. Soft palate obturator prostheses can usually address functional and esthetic concerns; however, the effectiveness of the prosthetic rehabilitation in improving the patient's well-being and overall quality of life (QOL) has not been extensively researched.
PURPOSE: The purpose of the present research was to evaluate the function of the prosthesis, to review the interrelation between sociodemographic, medical, and treat

Recently, the number of survivors that had oral cancer has increased, but deterioration in the quality of life of patients concerning oral function and cosmetic appearance has become problematic. Prosthodontic dentures usefully treat jaw defects after maxillary resection for cancer, but advances in microsurgery have rendered the possibility to reconstruct maxillary defect and oral cavity using a microvascular flap. Here, we describe 2-stage treatment after 35 years postoperatively. We restored the maxillofacial function using microvascular flaps and partial denture. The patient was a 59-year-o

INTRODUCTION: Osteopetrosis is a rare genetic bone disease caused by a functional abnormality of the osteoclasts. Until now there is no codified management for the complications of this pathology and few cases cited in the literature.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: a 19-year-old adult followed in our maxillofacial surgery department in the IBN ROCHD University Hospital for chronic osteomyelitis complicating mandibular osteopetrosis with skin fistulas. Patient operated several times. The persistence of osteomyelitis prevents the installation of a dental prosthesis and the appearance of new fistulas wit

Surgical and prosthodontic restoration of the midfacial region following tumor resection has always posed a considerable challenge, as this area serves crucial functional and esthetic roles. Being diagnosed and subsequently treated for facial tumors can have an immense psychosocial impact on a patient, as the resulting defects are often disfiguring, and lead to an inability to masticate, swallow, and speak clearly. Provision of an immediate facial and dental prosthesis at the time of surgery can limit these side effects and help reduce mental duress on these patients and their families, as wel

AIM: To retrospectively evaluate the 1-year outcome of implant therapy involving various types of localised lateral alveolar ridge and/or sinus floor augmentation procedures performed before implant placement.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-seven patients were consecutively treated with oral implants on average 6.5 months after bone grafting. A total of 82 regions were augmented and 151 implants were inserted. All regions were augmented with autogenous bone harvested intraorally. Block grafts (13 regions, 16%), particulate grafts (25 regions, 30%), and a combination of block and particulate gra

Patients undergoing partial rhinectomy with limited size may have the major portion of the nasal structure preserved. However, the fibrosis or scar formation after the surgery may cause distortion of remaining tissues, followed by nasal airway obstruction. By physically expanding an affected nostril during the impression and using digital technology to design a custom flexible internal nasal dilator, embedded in the medical grade silicone during processing, a partial nasal prosthesis with airway-maintaining purpose can be fabricated to improve quality of life both esthetically and functionally

Maxillofacial reconstruction by prosthetic means is a valuable contribution that medicine offers to the public. Materials design and properties are the main problems faced by scientists in this field. Materials used for intraoral prostheses are not ideal, but they have been perfected to the point of practical use. Denture resins, gold, chromium-cobalt alloys, and porcelain are widely used and produce acceptable results in the oral cavity. In this review, the properties and performance of some polymeric materials used in maxillofacial prosthetics are discussed, and new trends in research and de

Patients with complete avulsion of the palate may require extensive surgical and prosthodontic rehabilitation. The prosthesis should replace not only missing teeth but also lost soft tissues and bone, including the hard palate, residual alveolar ridges, and in some situations, the soft palate. This clinical report describes the prosthetic rehabilitation, after appropriate surgical options had been exhausted, of a patient with bilateral traumatic avulsion of the maxilla.

The fibula osteocutaneous flap with osseointegrated implants was used for reconstruction of a total maxillectomy defect. We have achieved satisfactory reconstruction of three-dimensional facial structure, orbit support, and a functional prosthesis. Our procedure restored the patient's masticatory function of the maxilla and enabled good speech and a natural facial appearance. A very high quality of function was obtained without any complications, but long-term follow-up is necessary for maintenance of the implants.

Rehabilitation of maxillofacial defects is an arduous task that involves restoring the form and function of the resected part of the defect. Obturators are the preferred choice of treatment for patients after resection involving the maxilla. Rehabilitation aims to separate the oral and nasal cavity and maintain anatomy while also assisting the patient with mastication, maintaining occlusion, supporting the mandible and facial tissues, and reestablishing speech and esthetics. Following surgery, a prosthetic evaluation is performed in which magnets are attached to the prosthesis to restore funct
