Behçet's disease (BD) has well-defined pulmonary complications, but cardiopulmonary exercise testing and the strength of the respiratory muscles have not been studied in detail. We aimed to investigate the pulmonary functions tests, inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength and endurance, cardiopulmonary exercise test response, and the relationship of these parameters in patients with BD. Forty BD patients and 20 healthy control subjects were recruited for this study. Mean age was 32.95 +/- 7.66 years for the BD group and 33.85 +/- 6.63 years for the control group with no statistically signif

BACKGROUND: Durability, defined as the progressive deterioration in performance (eg, speed or power output) during prolonged exercise, remains underexplored in trail running particularly under race-like conditions. The underlying physiological mechanisms contributing to this deterioration are increasingly described as resilience. This study investigated neuromuscular, ventilatory, and pacing responses during a simulated trail running race in well-trained athletes.
METHODS: Sixteen trained male trail runners (V˙O2peak: 65.3 [7.4] mL·kg-1·min-1 at an altitude of 1850 m) completed 6 laps of a 3.

We studied 53 patients with proximal myopathy to determine at what level of muscle weakness hypercapnic respiratory failure is likely, and which tests of pulmonary function or respiratory muscle strength would best suggest this development. Respiratory muscle strength was determined from maximal static efforts and in half the patients, both inspiratory and expiratory muscle strengths were less than 50% of normal. In the 37 patients without lung disease respiratory muscle weakness was accompanied by significant decreases in vital capacity, total lung capacity, and maximum voluntary ventilation;

There are divergent views about the harm that pectus excavatum and related chest deformities does to the respiratory and heart function. The indications for surgery and the optimal age for surgical intervention are debatable. In this study 37 operated and 38 nonoperated cases of about the same severity have been followed for more than ten years and examined after the age of 18 years. The examination included socio-economic, cosmetic and cardio-pulmonary function aspects. It could be shown that from the psychological aspect there were no significant differences between the operated and the non-

Our objective was to study long-term respiratory outcomes of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) treated in the perinatal period. This was a cohort study with 26 adolescent survivors and age- and gender-matched controls. Medical histories were retrieved from hospital charts and questionnaires. Pulmonary function testing included measurement of maximum inspiratory and expiratory pressures (MIPS and MEPS) and maximum voluntary ventilation (MVV). Unpaired two-tailed t-test and nonlinear regression were used for statistical analysis. Significant differences were found in forced expiratory volume

Metabolic and hemodynamic responses to exercise were evaluated in 10 patients with chronic congestive heart failure. We utilized an exercise protocol in which the work rate was increased continuously and oxygen uptake (VO2) kinetics were characterized by linear, first-order dynamics. VO2 at peak exercise (VO2max) was depressed at 12.8 +/- 2.3 ml/min/kg and the anaerobic threshold occurred at 63 +/- 10% of the VO2max. A significant correlation was observed between the VO2 at the anaerobic threshold and the resting cardiac index (r = .74, p less than .05). Ventilation-perfusion relationships imp

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of hyperventilation and breath-holding on hormonal activity and the acid-base balance in men. Three different experimental procedures were carried out with 11 trained subjects aged 24.5 years. In experiment I, all subjects performed hyperventilation for 3 min maintaining a paced ventilation of 47 l X min-1. In experiment II, they performed a threefold maximal voluntary breath-holding, separated by 1-min periods of normal breathing. Experiment III consisted of a combination of hyperventilation immediately followed by maximal voluntary bre

Benzodiazepines are known to cause muscle hypotonia, but their effects on respiratory muscle function, particularly on diaphragm, have not yet been studied. Our aim was to look for any effect of lorazepam on respiratory muscle function in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Nine stable COPD patients (mean +/- SD forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) 0.91 +/- 0.31 l) were included in the study. The following measurements were performed before and 1 hour after lorazepam administration (doses: 1.5 to 2 mg) by sublingual route: forced vital capacity (FVC), FEV1, max

Of 34 symptomatic adult asthmatic patients (23 men) aged 51 +/- 13 years (mean +/- 1 SD) with moderately severe airways obstruction who underwent maximal exercise testing at room temperature (22 degrees C) and humidity (44 percent RH) using a bicycle ergometer, we identified seven male patients aged 56 +/- 9 years in whom forced expired volume in one second (FEV1) increased greater than or equal to 20 percent over the baseline pre-exercise value (exercise-induced bronchodilation). At maximal exercise, these patients achieved an O2 consumption of 1.4 +/- 0.4 L/min and a minute ventilation of 56

Twenty-five patients who required mechanical ventilatory support (MVS) after major surgery or severe burns were studied to determine whether airway occlusion pressure (P(0.1)) is a clinically useful indicator to predict the success or failure of the weaning trial. A total of 33 weaning trials were attempted on these patients. Of the 33 trials, 24 were followed by successful weaning and 9 by failure. Although the success group, when compared with the failure group, had a lower respiratory rate ( P << 0.001), a lower minute ventilation ( P << 0.001), a higher maximal voluntary ventilation to min

Optimal timing of pulmonary valve replacement (PVR) for pulmonary regurgitation is a debated topic. It is logical that maximal aerobic capacity (VO2peak) would decline when a PVR is needed, but a diminished VO2peak is not always present before PVR, and previous studies show no improvement in VO2peak after PVR. This study aimed to evaluate changes in resting spirometry from pre- to post-PVR sternotomy, to determine the limiting factors of VO2peak before and after PVR, and to determine whether changes in resting lung function after PVR may explain the lack of improvement in VO2peak after surgery

Patients with mitochondrial myopathies (MM) usually suffer from exercise intolerance due to their impaired oxidative capacity and physical deconditioning. We evaluated the effects of a 12-week supervised randomized rehabilitation program involving endurance training in patients with MM. Twenty MM patients were assigned to a training or control group. For three nonconsecutive days each week, patients combined cycle exercise at 70% of their peak work rate with three upper-body weight-lifting exercises performed at 50% of maximum capacity. Training increased maximal oxygen uptake (28.5%), work ou

Preoperative and postoperative pulmonary function were compared by spirometry in one hundred and eleven cases, from 1980 to 1989, with pectus excavatum deformity. The patients consisted of 85 males and 26 females, aged 5-41 years. In the preoperative examination, mean values for % vital capacity (%VC), % 1 sec. timed vital capacity (FEV1.0%), % residual volume (%RV), % maximal voluntary ventilation (%MVV) were within normal limits. %VC had a tendency to decrease with increase in the degree of depression of the anterior chest wall. Postoperatively, %VC was significantly dropped, although no sig

Because of the oscillatory pattern of upper airway resistance and breathing during sleep in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), we hypothesized that OSA patients have an underlying instability of ventilatory drive to inspiratory muscles. To assess the stability of ventilatory drive in OSA patients and controls, we used the pseudorandom binary stimulation (PRBS) test and examined the closed- and open-loop responses to hyperoxic hypercapnia. The closed-loop response is produced by interactions of dynamic gain in controller, plant, and ventilatory feedback. The open-loop response reflect

UNLABELLED: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a progressive neuromuscular disorder characterized by respiratory decline. While nusinersen improves motor function, its long-term respiratory effects in milder SMA types (2 and 3) remain unclear. This study evaluates pulmonary outcomes following 3 years of treatment. We retrospectively reviewed genetically confirmed SMA 2 and 3 pediatric patients treated with nusinersen (2017-2022). Data included demographics, non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and mechanical insufflation-exsufflation (MIE) use, body mass index (BMI), feeding method, scoliosis, and res
