Thymomas and mediastinal lymphomas are the most common mediastinal neoplasms in cats. While mediastinal lymphoma occurs primarily in younger cats (approximately 2 to 4 years of age), thymomas are diagnosed almost exclusively in older cats. However, the following case shows that this is not necessarily always the case.A 3-year- and 11-month-old neutered male European Shorthair was presented with a preliminary report of exercise intolerance and restricted respiration. Both symptoms occurred primarily at high ambient temperatures. Radiographically, a mediastinal mass filled a significant part of

Bronchogenic cysts are commonly located in the middle mediastinal compartment as fluid-filled cysts and thymoma is one of the most common neoplasms in the anterior mediastinum in adult cases. For two cases of asymptomatic, incidentally discovered anterior mediastinal soft tissue mass in adults, we planned to perform complete thymectomy with minimally invasive techniques based on the guidelines of International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group. Their pathological finding revealed cystic lesions lined by ciliated epithelium and this supported the diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst rather than thymic

Myelolipoma is a benign nonepithelial neoplasm composed of mature marrow elements and fat cells. This rare neoplasm is usually discovered by pathologists incidentally at autopsy, and, with rare exceptions, usually occurs in the adrenal glands. One of these exceptional anatomic sites is the mediastinum, and only three cases of primary mediastinal myelolipomas have been documented in the English-language literature (1-3). We are presenting a primary myelolipoma involving the posterior mediastinum that was discovered on routine chest radiographs and successfully resected. Computed tomography (CT)

We report a mediastinal neuroblastoma in an octogenarian with paraneoplastic syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH). Neuroblastomas are very rare tumors in adults, with thoracic or mediastinal locations being especially uncommon. These neoplasms have been occasionally associated with the SIADH. Given the rarity of incidence and paucity of diagnostic and outcomes data, the significance of standard neuroblastoma prognostic characteristics is unclear, and no treatment paradigms exist for these patients. Further studies are needed to inform future clinical guidelines.

Smooth muscle tumors presenting as mediastinal soft tissue masses are rare and are often mistaken for other neoplasms. Benign tumors of the esophagus account for fewer than 1% of all esophageal tumors, the most common of which are leiomyomas. They are frequently located in the lower third of the esophagus. We report two cases of esophageal leiomyoma in the thoracic esophagus which were firstly presented as huge mediastinal mass with intermittent dysphagia and radiologically flecks of calcification.

Thymic epithelial neoplasms are rare tumors that constitute the majority of anterior mediastinal masses. They are classified as thymomas, thymic carcinomas, and thymic neuroendocrine neoplasms. Biopsy diagnosis is not common, and most tumors are surgically resected. Biopsy, including cytology, is indicated when a non-surgical entity is suspected or in cases of locally advanced disease. Smears of thymomas consist of round or spindle epithelial cells admixed with varying amounts of lymphocytes depending on the type of thymoma. Smears of thymic carcinoma and thymic neuroendocrine neoplasms are of

Mediastinal large B cell lymphomas are uncommon neoplasms that are thought to originate from thymic B cells. An unusual feature of these neoplasms is that they often lack surface immunoglobulin (Ig), a molecule ubiquitously expressed by most mature B cells. In the present study we have analyzed 12 cases of mediastinal large B cell lymphoma for the expression of the mb-1/CD79a polypeptide. This is a component, together with B29/CD79b, of a heterodimer that is associated with surface Ig on normal B cells. Our aim was to see whether loss of Ig in this type of lymphoma is associated with loss of t

A mediastinal squamous cell carcinoma and thyroid carcinoma were found in an aged horse. Clinical signs consisted of bilateral thyroid gland enlargement, chronic cough, and mild respiratory distress. The neoplasms were not treated. Squamous cell carcinoma is a common neoplasm in horses, but not in the cranial portion of the mediastinum. Thyroid carcinomas in horses are uncommon. This combination of neoplasms is rare and may have been associated with a defect in the immune system.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Accurate diagnosis of mediastinal tumors is of critical importance to establish appropriate therapy. However, these lesions are relatively uncommon and may be challenging to evaluate, particularly in small biopsy specimens. Thymomas and thymic carcinomas are the most common primary malignant tumors of the mediastinum, but the site can be affected by many other neoplasms that can pose significant difficulty in diagnosis. The objective of this article is to bring awareness to these rarer tumors and offer a diagnostic approach using ancillary techniques guided by clinica

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the ability of radiomics, applied to not-enhanced computed tomography (CT), to differentiate mediastinal masses as thymic neoplasms vs lymphomas.
METHODS: The present study was an observational retrospective trial. Inclusion criteria were pathology-proven thymic neoplasia or lymphoma with mediastinal localization, availability of CT. Exclusion criteria were age < 16 years and mediastinal lymphoma lesion < 4 cm. We selected 108 patients (M:F = 47:61, median age 48 years, range 17-79) and divided them into a training and a validation group. Radiomic features were

A child with mediastinal and supraclavicular ganglioneuroma, heterochromia iridis, and Horner's syndrome is described. The authors postulate that the thoracic neoplasm originated as a congenital neuroblastoma with metastasis to the supraclavicular lymph nodes and subsequent benign transformation, and that the ocular abnormalities resulted from sympathetic ganglion injury by the tumor in infancy. This seems to be the first published report of such ocular abnormalities associated with mediastinal ganglioneuroma.

Mediastinal metastases arising from a primary gastrointestinal neoplasm usually follow extensive subdiaphragmatic spread. However, we have reported the rare recurrence of rectal carcinoma in the mediastinum. In addition to emphasizing the systemic metastatic spread of rectal carcinoma, this case demonstrates the need to consider metastases arising from abdominal tumors as a cause of mediastinal masses.

INTRODUCTION: Synovial sarcomas commonly occur in the extremities of young adults. A primary occurrence in the mediastinum is very rare with only a few reported cases in the world literature. We report a case of mediastinal synovial sarcoma. This paper is about a 47-year-old male who presented with retrosternal chest pain and shortness of breath on exertion. Imaging showed an anterior mediastinal mass. Pathological examination of the resected mass showed a biphasic neoplasm with a spindle cell component admixed with gland-like elements. The tumor showed positive staining with cytokeratin, epit

Liposarcoma is the name given to a group of soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) with adipocytic differentiation. As a group, liposarcomas are the second most common STSs in adults. In 1951 Kozonis et al published that in the English language only four cases of liposarcomas originating in the mediastinum had been described. Primary mediastinal liposarcoma is an uncommon neoplasm of intrathoracic origin. We present the case of a 47-year-old woman diagnosed with a large mediastinal mass with intrapericardial invasion and massive pericardial effusion; biopsies showed a mediastinal liposarcoma.

A cranial mediastinal mass was observed radiographically in two 5-year-old adult male ferrets (Mustela putorius furo), both with histories of chronic episodic vomiting, dyspnea, and lethargy. Malignant lymphoma, a common neoplasm observed in ferrets, was considered the most likely diagnosis. Cardiomegaly and splenomegaly were also present. Histologically both mediastinal masses were composed of thymic epithelial cells and small lymphocytes, establishing a diagnosis of thymoma. Thymoma should now be included in the differential diagnosis of a cranial mediastinal mass in ferrets.

Leiomyosarcomas are uncommon mesenchymal neoplasms. Primary mediastinal leiomyosarcomas are even rarer with only a limited number of cases reported. Given the high potential for recurrence and metastasis, accurate and timely diagnosis become extremely crucial for treatment. Herein, we present a unique case of a 70-year-old asymptomatic male patient with a primary leiomyosarcoma originating from the azygos vein, which was misdiagnosed as a tracheal tumor preoperatively. This report highlights the critical importance of including leiomyosarcoma in the differential diagnosis of mediastinal masses

Lung cancer is the leading cause of deaths from malignant neoplasms worldwide, and a satisfactory biopsy that allows for histological and other analyses is critical for its diagnosis. Guidelines have recommended endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) as the reference standard for the staging of lung cancer. However, the relatively limited sample volume retrieved by needle aspiration might restrict the diagnostic capacity of EBUS-TBNA in other uncommon thoracic tumors. Transbronchial mediastinal cryobiopsy is a recently developed sampling strategy for media

Mediastinal germ cell tumours (teratomas, seminomas, and non-seminomatous malignant germ cell tumours) are a heterogeneous group of benign and malignant neoplasms. The standard treatment of mediastinal non-seminomatous malignant germ cell tumours is four cycles of chemotherapy followed by surgical resection of the residual mass. Small localized mediastinal seminomas may be treated with primary resection followed by radiotherapy. In patients with locally advanced disease, the preferred treatment is systemic chemotherapy followed by surgical resection of any residual disease. Thymomas can be loc

Two cases of intrathoracic neurogenic tumors are discussed. The benign neoplasms were located in the posterior mediastinum and caused no clinical symptoms. In both cases, complete resection of the lesion was achieved by video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). There were no intraoperative complications. Postoperatively, one patient presented with Claude Bernard-Horner syndrome, which resolved spontaneously after 1 week. Although the great majority of mediastinal neurogenic neoplasms are benign, resection is necessary to prevent malignant transformation and intraspinal extension.

Between September 1983 and December 1988, we observed 16 cases of hematologic neoplasia associated with mediastinal germ-cell tumors. Twenty-eight similar cases have been reported in the literature. A review of the clinical and cytogenetic details in these patients suggests that the hematologic neoplasia is not the result of cisplatin-based chemotherapy of the mediastinal germ-cell cancer. This syndrome was found only in patients with nonseminomatous mediastinal germ-cell tumors, particularly those with serologic or histologic evidence of yolk-sac elements. The two most common hematologic neop
