Suicide and Medical Illness: A Latent Class Analysis of Coroner Records in Toronto.

OBJECTIVE: People with chronic illnesses are at elevated risk of suicide. Prior research has focused on risk with specific diagnoses and/or comparisons with living controls; the profiles of medically ill people who die by suicide remain largely unknown. This study aims to identify characteristics and subgroups among suicide decedents with medical illnesses. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of 5288 suicide deaths in Toronto, Canada (1998-2020) using coroner records. Bivariate and logistic regression compared decedents with and without reported medical illness across demograph

Alerts and Alarms-Can Electronic Medical Records Help Children and Adolescents Survive Sepsis?

Early recognition and treatment of paediatric sepsis has been shown to improve survival. Automated sepsis alerts embedded in electronic medical records (EMRs) offer real-time identification of high-risk patients and may improve timeliness of sepsis care, with possible limitations including overdiagnosis, overtreatment and alert fatigue. It is currently unclear whether automated alerts improve clinical outcomes in paediatric sepsis. We conducted a systematic review and narrative synthesis of studies evaluating clinical outcomes (mortality, PICU admission rate, length of stay), process measures

Assessment of the use of electronic medical records system and barriers in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Currently the use of electronic medical records (EMR) systems emerged globally especially OpenMRS to significantly improve healthcare delivery. However, challenges persist in achieving full EMR adoption, particularly in developing countries. In Rwanda, OpenMRS system was introduced in 2013 as a strategy to align digital health to the country’s information and communication technologies (ICT)-for-development agenda. Reports from healthcare providers indicate varying EMR adoption levels in health facilities in Rwanda. This study aims to assess the current usage of EMR and identify im

Hurricane-Resilient Electronic Medical Records: A Distributed Architecture for Small Island Developing States.

Hurricane Dorian (2019, GLIDE TC-2019-000099-BHS) permanently destroyed decades of patient records in Grand Bahama, The Bahamas, exposing critical vulnerabilities in centralized health care information systems. This study proposes a distributed electronic medical record (EMR) architecture to maintain patient data availability during and after catastrophic hurricanes in small island states. The architecture connects The Bahamas' approximately 75 community health facilities through regional replication hubs, each maintaining a full local database replica with bidirectional synchronization, enabl

One Step Closer to Conversational Medical Records: ChatGPT Parses Psoriasis Treatments from EMRs.

Background: Large Language Models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, are increasingly applied in medicine for summarization, clinical decision support, and diagnostic assistance, including recent work in dermatology. Previous AI and NLP models in dermatology have mainly focused on lesion classification, diagnostic support, and patient education, while extracting structured treatment information from unstructured dermatology records remains underexplored. We evaluated ChatGPT-4o's ability to identify psoriasis treatments from free-text documentation, compared with expert annotations. Methods: In total, 9

Alcohol-related encounter surveillance using emergency medical service records in Massachusetts, 2013-2023.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol is one of the most used substances in the United States. It can be hard to accurately assess alcohol use through self-report or medical records because it is a widespread mainstream legal substance. Identifying alcohol-related encounters in emergency medical services (EMS) records provides additional data on alcohol use. METHODS: We used the Massachusetts Ambulance Trip Record Information System (MATRIS) to develop a definition for alcohol-related encounters (AREs) in EMS encounters based on alcohol-related words and symptoms. An additional definition flagged AREs related

Comparison of machine learning models for mucopolysaccharidosis early diagnosis using UAE medical records.

Rare diseases, such as Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS), present significant challenges to the healthcare system. Some of the most critical challenges are the delay and the lack of accurate disease diagnosis. Early diagnosis of MPS is crucial, as it has the potential to significantly improve patients' response to treatment, thereby reducing the risk of complications or death. This study evaluates the performance of different machine learning (ML) models for MPS diagnosis using electronic health records (EHR) from the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA). The retrospective cohort comprises 115 r

Factors Influencing Facial Paralysis Recovery: A Retrospective Cohort Study Using Electronic Medical Records.

This study aims to report on treatment outcomes and related factors in Bell's palsy patients by analyzing Electronic Medical Records (EMR) data. To assess the impact on the duration until improvement in House-Brackmann grading post-onset, we conducted an analysis of inpatient records for Bell's palsy patients admitted to a traditional Korean medicine hospital from 2018 to 2022. A total of 1049 subjects were included in the analysis. Contributing factors to a duration of more than 14 days until improvement in HB Grade included age 40 or above, male gender, an initial period of more than 7 days

Antimicrobial usage surveys using electronic medical records in cattle practice in Gifu Prefecture.

As the majority of antimicrobial treatments for cattle in Japan are prescribed by veterinarians, medical record information can be useful in clarifying the amount and purpose of antimicrobial use. In this study, we examined their amount and purpose in cattle practices in Gifu Prefecture. In cattle, approximately 85% of the antimicrobials are used for the treatment of gastrointestinal (50.4%) and respiratory diseases (34.4%). The main antimicrobials were sulfonamides (27.1 kg, 49.2%), followed by amphenicols (11.9 kg, 21.7%). As for second-line antimicrobials for veterinary treatment, fluoroqui

BACKGROUND: Delirium is frequently unrecognized due to the absence of regular screening. In addition to validated bedside tools, the computer-assisted instrument based on clinical notes from electronic medical records may be useful. AIMS: To assess the psychometric properties of a Chinese-chart-based keyword instrument for semiautomatically screening delirium using Natural language processing (NLP) based on clinical notes from electronic medical records. Stimulant-related incident surveillance using emergency medical service records in Massachusetts, 2013-2020.

BACKGROUND: As stimulant use increases across the United States, emergency medical services (EMS) are crucial touchpoints in the health care system. To better measure the prevalence of stimulant use, misuse, and EMS incidents related to stimulant intoxication, definitions for stimulant-related incidents (SRIs) are needed. METHODS: We used the Massachusetts Ambulance Trip Record Information System (MATRIS) from 2013 to 2020 to develop definitions of stimulant-related incidents. EMS runs reported to MATRIS were categorized based on stimulant-related words and symptoms. The three tiers were "any

Linked claims and medical records for cancer case management : evaluation of mammography abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: Failure to obtain the requisite follow-up of patients with abnormal mammograms may delay cancer diagnosis and impact outcome. Up to 20% of women do not receive timely recommended follow-up. The current study tested the accuracy of the linkage of payer claims and clinical data to identify the appropriate treatment for patients with abnormal mammograms. METHODS: Electronic medical records in a staff model practice that was affiliated with a single health payer were scanned to identify the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS(R)) code for all mammograms.
