Loss of appetite is pervasive among patients with advanced cancer. Cancer patients cite it as one of their most troubling symptoms. To date, however, palliative options remain limited. Megestrol acetate and dexamethasone provide only modest relief. Novel agents such as thalidomide, adenosine triphosphate, and other cytokine inhibitors merit further investigation.

Low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) is a kind of uterine malignancy. Total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was the main treatment. Anastrozole (Arimidex-Zeneca) and letrozole (Femara-Novartis) are the first selective, oral, non-steroidal aromatase inhibitors. They are licensed for the treatment of advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women where tamoxifen or other anti-oestrogen therapy has failed. The manufacturers of both drugs claim that their products are more effective, less toxic and better tolerated than the progestogen megestrol acetate, the standard therapy in this clinical situation. The anti-proliferative effect of progestins was studied in human transformed cell lines from the uterine cervix (C-4I, C33A and Me-180).
