Overexploitation has led to a rise in pathogenic bacteria within aquaculture, increasing reliance on antibiotics, and developing microorganism resistance. This situation underscores the need to explore alternatives with a reduced ecological impact. Metabolites derived from essential oils have demonstrated antimicrobial properties that can inhibit or diminish the activity of various microorganisms. In this study, the antimicrobial efficacy of cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), and thyme (Thymus vulgaris) essential oils against pathogenic bacteria (Aeromonas, Ps

Pediculosis is a widespread condition reported in schoolchildren. Treatment most commonly involves the physical removal of nits using fine-toothcombs and the chemical treatment of adult lice and eggs with topical preparations. The active constituents of these preparations frequently exert their effects through inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE, EC 3.1.1.7). Increasing resistance to many preparations has led to the search for more effective treatments. Tea Tree oil, otherwise known as Melaleuca oil, has been added to several preparations as an alternative treatment of head lice infestati

The insecticidal potency of some essential oils suggests that they may find an application in the control of house dust mites, but current in vitro assays for mites do not appear to give consistent results. A simple, novel, mite chamber assay was therefore developed to carry out testing. Different species of insects are susceptible to different essential oil components, so we compared the relative acaricidal and pediculicidal activity of three essential oils: tea tree, lavender and lemon, because the activity of their constituents on lice ranges from highly active to virtually inactive. The demand for ornamental fish has led to a steep rise in aquaculture for the hobbyist trade, promoting the emergence, persistence and spread of various infectious diseases. Complete control of disease outbreaks with antibiotics and chemical-based medicines is rare, but plant compounds may herald potential alternatives effective against a range of pathogens. Melafix® and Pimafix® are formulated with the essential oils cajuput (Melaleuca cajuputi) and West Indian bay (Pimenta racemosa) and are marketed against bacterial and fungal infections, respectively. Previous experiments showed high effic

OBJECTIVE: Periodontitis is a type of prevalent chronic inflammatory disorder resulting in a failure in the function of tissues supporting the tooth, like gingiva, alveolar bone, and periodontal ligament. Although antibiotic therapy is a common therapy for periodontitis cases, this approach can cause some adverse effects in these patients. Thus, finding an effective curative option with low side effects is still a puzzle.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This narrative review was conducted on the effects of herbal and nano-based herbal medicine against periodontitis by searching different databases suc

To replace animal testing and improve the prediction of skin sensitization, significant attention has been directed to the use of alternative methods. The direct peptide reactivity assay (DPRA), the regulatory agencies' approved alternative in chemico method, has been applied for understanding the sensitization capacity of activated ascaridole. Ascaridole, the oxidative metabolite of α-terpinene, is considered to be one of the components responsible for the contact allergy associated with essential oils derived from Chenopodium and Melaleuca species. The recently developed high-throughput scre

The excessive utilization of antibiotics gives rise to the development of bacterial resistance, the deterioration of animal immune functions, the increase in mortality rates, and the undermining of human immunity. Therefore, there is an urgent necessity to explore new antimicrobial agents or alternatives to tackle bacterial resistance. We investigated tea tree oil (TTO), a pure natural plant essential oil extracted from Melaleuca leaves, which exerted efficient antibacterial activities. However, the poor solubility and high volatility of TTO limited the clinical application. Therefore, tea tre

Interdisciplinary studies on cultural heritage artworks provide efficient solutions to control fungal growth and the negative effects of biodeterioration. In this study, we aimed to identify the population of filamentous fungi colonizing an engraving by the Dutch painter Rembrandt, whose conservation status was compromised and showed visible stains of biodeterioration. Microbiological techniques, such as cultivation-dependent approaches and molecular biology, have been used to identify fungal populations. In addition, the anaerobic atmosphere technique and eco-friendly antifungal agents, such

The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria has stimulated the search for plant-derived antimicrobials with alternative modes of action. This study investigated whether chemically distinct essential oils (EOs) differ in their antibacterial effects and their ability to modulate bacterial efflux-associated processes in clinically relevant MDR pathogens. The chemical compositions of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), lemon (Citrus limon), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), and Eucalyptus radiata EOs, as well as their blend, were characterized by gas chromatography-ma

This review examines strategies to enhance the antifungal properties of commercial soft lining materials (SLMs) through modification with plant-derived oils, extracts, and powders. These natural bioactive compounds act via multiple mechanisms, including disruption of fungal cell membranes, inhibition of biofilm formation, and interference with Candida albicans metabolism, the pathogen causing denture-associated candidiasis. Their incorporation into SLM provides localized antifungal activity at the denture-mucosa interface. The review highlights Aloe vera (aloe), Azadirachta indica (neem), Ocim

Pediculosis is a prevalent ectoparasite infestation caused by lice. The head louse (Pediculus humanus capitis) and body louse (Pediculus humanus humanus) are obligatory parasites whose only known hosts are humans. Pediculosis is probably the most common ectoparasitic infestation, affecting up to 80% of the population in several countries, and particularly prevalent in the infant population worldwide. Several treatment options, including shampoos and creams containing insecticides, have been introduced for the treatment of pediculosis. Recently, the use of synthetic chemicals to control human l

The rising resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to benzalkonium chloride (BAC) represents a major challenge in infection control. This study developed a benzalkonium chloride-essential oil nanoemulsion (BAC-EO-NE) using Litsea cubeba and Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) oils to overcome BAC resistance through terpene-mediated synergism. GC-MS profiling identified citronellal (17.3%), citronellol (13.8%), and 1,8-cineole (44.5%) as dominant membrane-active constituents. The optimized nanoemulsion displayed nanoscale droplet size (132.2 nm), narrow PDI (0.162), and stable zeta potential (-13.5
