Exploring the Therapeutic Potential of Medicinal Plants in the Context of Gastrointestinal Health: A Review.

Medicinal plants represent promising sources for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders because of their abundance in bioactive compounds with therapeutic properties. Throughout history, various plant species have been used to alleviate digestive ailments, and studies have revealed the presence of metabolites with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antiparasitic, antidiarrheal, antioxidant, and anticancer activities. The secondary metabolites responsible for these properties include alkaloids, terpenoids, and phenolic compounds, with the latter, particularly flavonoids, being th

Exploring the Diversity, Root Colonization, and Morphology of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi in Lamiaceae.

This study aimed to explore the diversity, root morphology, and colonization of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) associated with eight medicinal plants of the Lamiaceae family. Rhizospheric soil and root samples were collected from eight species of Lamiaceae plants for AMF analysis. The results indicate that root colonization was not directly related to the number of AMF spores in the rhizosphere. However, a significant correlation was found between the percentage of root colonization and the number of AMF species present in the individual plants. The highest percentage of colonization (86.6

A Two-Week Treatment with Plant Extracts Changes Gut Microbiota, Caecum Metabolome, and Markers of Lipid Metabolism in ob/ob Mice.

SCOPE: Targeting gut microbiota dysbiosis by prebiotics is effective, though side effects such as abdominal bloating and flatulence may arise following high prebiotic consumption over weeks. The aim is therefore to optimize the current protocol for prebiotic use. METHODS AND RESULTS: To examine the prebiotic properties of plant extracts, two independent studies are conducted in ob/ob mice, over two weeks. In the first study, Porphyra umbilicalis and Melissa officinalis L. extracts are evaluated; in the second study, a high vs low dose of an Emblica officinalis Gaertn extract is assessed. Thes

Region-specific effects of STW 5 (Iberogast) and its components in gastric fundus, corpus and antrum.

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a disorder that involves impaired gastric accommodation, antral hypomotility, and upper abdominal pain. The herbal drug STW 5 (Iberogast) is used to successfully treat FD patients. Here, we report in vitro data revealing the mode of action of STW 5 and its individual herbal extracts on gastric motility. STW 5 evoked a relaxation of the proximal stomach but increased antral motility. Both effects are myogenic. The extracts of Angelica root, chamomile flower and liquorice root mimicked the inhibitory effects in the proximal stomach whereas the extracts of greater cel

Integrating Microbiological Indicators and Shotgun Metagenomics for the Assessment of the Rhizosphere Microbiome of Medicinal Plants.

Medicinal plants are rich sources of bioactive secondary metabolites, yet their long-term effects on the rhizosphere (RS) microbial communities remain poorly understood, particularly with respect to microbial selection and functional potential. This study evaluated the number of selected groups of microorganisms culturable in vitro in the RS and bulk soil (BS) within 10-year monocultures of 11 medicinal plant species, and as a targeted case study, we performed shotgun metagenomic profiling for Allium ursinum. The abundance of microorganisms differed markedly among plant species, indicating spe

A Chemically Characterized Polyherbal Extract Selectively Attenuates Chronic Unpredictable Stress-Induced Redox-Sensitive, Inflammatory, and Metabolic Alterations in Female Rats.

Chronic stress contributes to metabolic and mental disorders, with accumulating evidence suggesting differences in stress responses between females and males. Although Centaurium erythraea, Valeriana officinalis, Melissa officinalis, and Humulus lupulus possess well-documented antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroactive properties, the biological activity of their combined extract remains largely unexplored. Here, a chemically characterized polyherbal extract was evaluated for in vitro biosafety and its effects on chronic unpredictable stress-induced behavioral, metabolic, and molecular al

Assessing the virucidal activity of essential oils against feline calicivirus, a non-enveloped virus used as surrogate of norovirus.

Norovirus (NoV) causes serious gastrointestinal disease worldwide and is regarded as an important foodborne pathogen. Due the difficulties of in vitro cultivation for human NoV, alternative caliciviruses (i.e., feline calicivirus, FCV, or murine NoV) have long been used as surrogates for in vitro assessment of the efficacy of antivirals. Essential oils (EOs) are natural compounds that have displayed antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. We report in vitro the virucidal efficacy of four EOs, Melissa officinalis L. EO (MEO), Thymus vulgaris L. EO (TEO), Rosmarinus officinalis L. EO (REO), an

Comparative bioactivity screening and chitosan nanoparticle formulation of pharmacy-grade medicinal tea extracts used for common cold.

Medicinal teas are widely used for the symptomatic relief of common cold; however, comparative data on standardized pharmacy-grade products remain limited. In this study, 40 aqueous and ethanolic extracts prepared from 20 pharmacy-grade herbal drugs used for common cold were evaluated for their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Antimicrobial effects were determined by the microdilution method against bacterial and fungal strains, while antioxidant capacity was assessed using DPPH, FRAP, CUPRAC, ABTS, and TPC assays. Ethanolic extracts showed higher antioxidant activity than aqueous ext
