Memory for the position of stationary objects: disentangling foveal bias and memory averaging.

The perceived and remembered position of stationary target objects is subject to a large number of distortions. Objects are localized toward the fovea, and when an additional object (distractor) is presented, a tendency to average target and distractor position was observed. These distortions in visual short-term memory have been referred to as foveal bias and memory averaging, respectively. Because most studies on memory averaging did not monitor eye fixation, foveal bias and memory averaging may have been confounded. That is, observers may have fixated the distractor. To disentangle these fa

Social evaluative stress enhances central detail memory, reduces false memory, and results in intrusive memories that last for days.

Few studies have quantified what an individual remembers about a laboratory-controlled stressor. Here, we aimed to replicate previous work by using a modified version of the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) to quantify participant memory for a stressful experience. We also aimed to extend this work by quantifying false and intrusive memories that ensued. One hundred and seven participants were exposed to the TSST (stress) or the friendly TSST (f-TSST; no stress). The TSST required participants to deliver a ten-minute speech in front of two laboratory panel members as part of a mock job intervie

Immunological memory to vaccines.

The extraordinary success of vaccines saving lives and improving human health is predicated on immune memory. Within the armamentarium of adaptive immunity, a holistic view of the different components contributing to immune protection is important for understanding the myriad benefits of vaccines. This review presents the current understanding of vaccine-generated memory, integrating layers of immunity including B cells, CD8+ T cells, CD4+ T cells, and antibody responses, with emphasis on human vaccine data. Functions and durability of distinct memory types are considered, including those of t

Cephalopod learning and memory.

Cephalopod molluscs are renowned for their unique central nervous system - a donut-shaped brain organised around the oesophagus. This brain supports sophisticated learning and memory abilities. Between the 1950s and 1980s, these cognitive abilities were extensively studied in octopus (Figure 1A) - a now leading model for the study of memory and its neural substrates (approximately 200 papers during this period). The focus on octopus learning and memory was mainly due to their curious nature and the fact that they adapt to laboratory-controlled conditions, making them easy to test and maintain

Anomalies of Autobiographical Memory.

OBJECTIVES: In this paper, I review three 'anomalies' or disorders in autobiographical memory: neurological retrograde amnesia (RA), spontaneous confabulation, and psychogenic amnesia. METHODS: Existing theories are reviewed, their limitations considered, some of my own empirical findings briefly described, and possible interpretations proposed and interspersed with illustrative case-reports. RESULTS: In RA, there may be an important retrieval component to the deficit, and factors at encoding may give rise to the relative preservation of early memories (and the reminiscence bump) which manif

Neuromodulation for restoring memory.

Disorders of learning and memory have a large social and economic impact in today's society. Unfortunately, existing medical treatments have shown limited clinical efficacy or potential for modification of the disease course. Deep brain stimulation is a successful treatment for movement disorders and has shown promise in a variety of other diseases including psychiatric disorders. The authors review the potential of neuromodulation for the treatment of disorders of learning and memory. They briefly discuss learning circuitry and its involvement in Alzheimer disease and traumatic brain injury.

Natural Killer Cell Memory.

Natural killer (NK) cells have historically been considered short-lived cytolytic cells that can rapidly respond against pathogens and tumors in an antigen-independent manner and then undergo cell death. Recently, however, NK cells have been shown to possess traits of adaptive immunity and can acquire immunological memory in a manner similar to that of T and B cells. In this review, we discuss evidence of NK cell memory and the mechanisms involved in the generation and survival of these innate lymphocytes.

Searching for repressed memory.

This chapter summarizes the work of my research group on adults who report either repressed, recovered, or continuous memories of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) or who report no history of CSA. Adapting paradigms from cognitive psychology, we tested hypotheses inspired by both the "repressed memory" and "false memory" perspectives on recovered memories of CSA. We found some evidence for the false memory perspective, but no evidence for the repressed memory perspective. However, our work also suggests a third perspective on recovered memories that does not require the concept of repression. Some

Immediate peri-operative memory.

BACKGROUND: Information about anterograde and retrograde amnesias in the immediate peri-operative period is scarce. During this period, assessment of memory for real-life events is also rare. We hypothesized that there would be both anterograde and retrograde amnesias and memory for peri-operative events would be better than for verbal memory. METHODS: We studied 40 patients who underwent general anesthesia and surgery and 19 control volunteers who were matched to the patients but did not have surgery. Patients completed the state anxiety part of the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory

Emotional memory is perceptual.

In two experiments it was investigated which aspects of memory are influenced by emotion. Using a framework proposed by Roediger (American Psychologist 45 (1990) 1043-1056), two dimensions relevant for memory were distinguished the implicit-explicit distinction, and the perceptual versus conceptual distinction. In week 1, subjects viewed a series of slides accompanied with a spoken story in either of the two versions, a neutral version, or a version with an emotional mid-phase. In week 2, memory performance for the slides and story was assessed unexpectedly. A free recall test revealed superio

Remote memory in epilepsy.

PURPOSE: There is now a considerable amount of research relating to memory functioning in epilepsy. The majority of studies have focused on the retention of new information, and few reports have measured memory for past events. This study aims to redress this and measure the efficiency of remote memory in epilepsy. METHODS: A remote memory questionnaire was prepared and administered to three groups of patients with epilepsy and a control group without epilepsy. The questionnaire assessed knowledge of public events that occurred between 1980 and 1991, inclusive. The epilepsy groups comprised 3

[Memory: clinico-pathologic data].

Synaptic modifications are probably the basis of the memory processes that take place in the central nervous system. They have been studied in Aplysia or in hippocampal slices. How these minute alterations of the synaptic strength are integrated in larger neural systems is still poorly understood. In man, hippocampal lesions, when bilateral, cause a deficit in anterograde episodic memory. The loss of previously acquired memories (retrograde amnesia) is limited. Procedural memory is spared. Young patients with hippocampal lesions remain able to learn how to read or to write (abilities that belo

Florence Nightingale's memory loss.

Alzheimer's disease presents in many guises from the frankly florid to the benign decline in memory and functioning. Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) is well known to the public as the face behind the nursing profession. What has not been well studied is her cognitive decline in old age. Evidence is presented to support the diagnosis of late onset Alzheimer's disease, perhaps from a familial basis, this being the major contributor to her death. Her last years were with dignity and can be an inspiration to our patients who are newly diagnosed and their carers. Her case serves to remind us of th

[Aging of memory mechanisms].

Human amnesia cases (after surgical removal of the hippocampi or brain anoxia) have clearly established the critical role of the hippocampal formation in anterograde amnesia. Other parts of the brain may also contribute to anterograde amnesia (mammillary bodies, medial thalamus). In neurodegenerative diseases (and specially in Alzheimer's disease) amnesia is often the prominent symptom, but the brain lesions are not restricted to the hippocampal formation. In Alzheimer's disease they involve also the cerebral cortex and several subcortical nuclei. Physiological brain aging is also associated w

Odor memory: taking stock.

This review discusses the state of knowledge in odor memory within the framework of mainstream memory research. Experimental findings are structured around prevailing theoretical distinctions in the study of memory proper, including semantic-episodic memory and implicit-explicit memory. Unaided odor-identification performance is found to be approximately 40%-50% of the total stimulus set presented to Ss, although performance approaches the limit of memorial discrimination if Ss are given label training with feedback. Odor identification is conceptualized as a task with 3 major components and w

Freebase cocaine and memory.

Despite the seriousness of acute medical and psychological consequences of cocaine abuse, little knowledge exists about the chronic effects of the drug. Investigation of a sample of abstinent freebase (crack) abusers in the Bahamas provides the first research evidence that prolonged cocaine abuse may result in persistent short-term memory disturbances.

Brain mechanisms and memory.

When mental operations share input and output mechanisms, it is necessary to resort to neuropsychological evidence to determine whether they belong to the same or different systems. That multiple memory systems exist is suggested by dissociation between memory performances by normal people, and proven by dissociations in memory performances induced by focal brain damage. The pathological forgetting of the amnesic syndrome is limited to memory for events ("episodic memory") and appears to be due to the patient's inability in escape from control of his present internal and external environment i

Clinical tests of memory.

This study compared the performance of groups Alzheimer, Korsakoff, and depressed patients and a group of healthy controls at various clinical tests of memory, and wide differences were found in the discriminatory power of the different tests. In addition, the patterns of performance of the Alzheimer and Korsakoff groups differed, and to some extent this was understandable in terms of what is known about the nature of organic amnesia. Depressed patients showed relatively mild impairments, which were not correlated with the severity of their depression.

Neurohypophyseal principles and memory.

The neurohypophyseal hormones vasopressin and oxytocin modulate memory processes. Vasopressin facilitates, while oxytocin attenuates memory consolidation and retrieval. These influences are located in different regions of the molecules. Thus, the neurohypophyseal hormones act as precursor molecules for neuropeptides involved in memory processes. The covalent ring structures of both vasopressin and oxytocin mainly affect consolidation; the linear parts, retrieval processes; while nearly the whole oxytocin or vasotocin molecule is needed for attenuation of consolidation and retrieval. A unilateral memory defect.

Several authors have suggested that arousal is an important component of learning. If the neglect syndrome is a unilateral defect of alerting (arousal) as recent studies have suggested, then patients with this syndrome should have a unilateral learning defect. To test these hypotheses, eight patients with unilateral neglect were given consonant trigrams randomly to either ear, and the patients were asked to identify the auditory stimuli either immediately or after an 18 second delay during which time the patients were asked to count. All eight demonstrated that the number of errors between the
