Octopamine signaling from clock neurons plays dual roles in Drosophila long-term memory.

Circadian clock genes are best known for regulating circadian rhythms, but they also play crucial roles in memory processes. This suggests that memory is modulated by neural networks containing clock neurons, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In Drosophila melanogaster, approximately 240 clock neurons are grouped into at least eight distinct clusters. Among them, the dorsal-lateral neurons (LNds) are required for maintaining long-term memory (LTM). In contrast, the neuropeptide Pigment-dispersing factor (Pdf), expressed in both small and large ventral-lateral neurons (s-LNvs a

Who is at risk of long-term subjective memory impairment after electroconvulsive therapy?

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment for depression with potential transient cognitive side effects. However, subjective memory impairment can extend over a long period after ECT. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess potential risk factors for long-term subjective memory impairment 6 months after ECT and to explore if the associations are mediated by depressive symptoms. METHODS: This registry-based study used the Swedish National Quality Register for ECT and other national registers. Long-term subjective memory worsening was defined as a minimum 2-step wor

Long-term verbal memory deficit and associated hippocampal alterations in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

Chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is a genetic disease associated with an increased risk for schizophrenia and a specific cognitive profile. In this paper, we challenge the current view of spared verbal memory in 22q11.2DS by investigating verbal memory consolidation processes over an extended time span to further qualify the neuropsychological profile. Our hypotheses are based on brain anomalies of the medial temporal lobes consistently reported in this syndrome.Eighty-four participants (45 with 22q11.2DS), aged 8-24 years old, completed a verbal episodic memory task to investi

Long-term administration of excess zinc impairs learning and memory in aged mice.

Zinc (Zn) is an essential element, but excess amounts are known to cause neurotoxic effects. The risk of excessive Zn intake is increased by supplementing food intake with dietary supplements. Ageing affects many cellular processes that predispose individuals to neurodegeneration. Indeed, the prevalence of senile dementia such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and vascular-type dementia increases with age. As such, we investigated the effects of long-term exposure to excess Zn on learning and memory in aged mice. ICR-JCL female mice (aged 26 weeks) were administered 0, 200, or 500 p

Visual recognition memory, manifested as long-term habituation, requires synaptic plasticity in V1.

Familiarity with stimuli that bring neither reward nor punishment, manifested through behavioral habituation, enables organisms to detect novelty and devote cognition to important elements of the environment. Here we describe in mice a form of long-term behavioral habituation to visual grating stimuli that is selective for stimulus orientation. Orientation-selective habituation (OSH) can be observed both in exploratory behavior in an open arena and in a stereotyped motor response to visual stimuli in head-restrained mice. We found that the latter behavioral response, termed a 'vidget', require

Long-term memory effects of an incremental blood pressure intervention in a mortal cohort.

In the present study, we examine long-term population-level effects on episodic memory of an intervention over 15 years that reduces systolic blood pressure in individuals with hypertension. A limitation with previous research on the potential risk reduction of such interventions is that they do not properly account for the reduction of mortality rates. Hence, one can only speculate whether the effect is due to changes in memory or changes in mortality. Therefore, we extend previous research by providing both an etiological and a prognostic effect estimate. To do this, we propose a Bayesian se

A coordinated and enhanced brain network supports the persistence of long-term cocaine memory.

The persistence of drug memories accounts for the high risk of drug relapse, which is a major challenge in the treatment of substance use disorders. However, the neurobiological underpinnings, especially the dynamic changes of brain networks underlying long-term drug memories, remain unclear. Here we utilized cocaine conditioned place preference (CPP) in rats combined with c-Fos mapping in multiple brain regions and network analysis to assess dynamic patterns of neural activity and functional memory networks following the recall of short-term and long-term cocaine memory. Furthermore, we emplo

Rescue of Long-Term Spatial Memory by 7,8-Dihydroxyflavone in Mice with Reduced Oligodendrogenesis.

Oligodendrogenesis is the process by which new oligodendrocytes are produced in the CNS. Oligodendrocytes form myelin, which has a vital role in neural signal transmission and integration. Here we tested mice with reduced adult oligodendrogenesis in the Morris water maze, a test of spatial learning. These mice were found to have impaired long-term (28 d) spatial memory. However, when 7,8-dihydroxyflavone (7,8-DHF) was administered immediately after each training session, their long-term spatial memory impairment was rescued. An increase in the number of newly formed oligodendrocytes in the cor

On the participation of adenosinergic receptors in the reconsolidation of spatial long-term memory in male rats.

To date, there is insufficient evidence to explain the role of adenosinergic receptors in the reconsolidation of long-term spatial memory. In this work, the role of the adenosinergic receptor family (A1, A2A, A2B, and A3) in this process has been elucidated. It was demonstrated that when infused bilaterally into the hippocampal CA1 region immediately after an early nonreinforced test session performed 24 h posttraining in the Morris water maze task, adenosine can cause anterograde amnesia for recent and late long-term spatial memory. This effect on spatial memory reconsolidation was blocked by

The involvement of long-term serial-order memory in reading development: A longitudinal study.

Recent findings suggest that Hebb repetition learning-a paradigmatic example of long-term serial-order learning-is impaired in adults with dyslexia. The current study further investigated the link between serial-order learning and reading using a longitudinal developmental design. With this aim, verbal and visual Hebb repetition learning performance and reading skills were assessed in 96 Dutch-speaking children who we followed from first through second grade of primary school. We observed a positive association between order learning capacities and reading ability as well as weaker Hebb learni

Making memories: the development of long-term visual knowledge in children with visual agnosia.

There are few reports about the effects of perinatal acquired brain lesions on the development of visual perception. These studies demonstrate nonseverely impaired visual-spatial abilities and preserved visual memory. Longitudinal data analyzing the effects of compromised perceptions on long-term visual knowledge in agnosics are limited to lesions having occurred in adulthood. The study of children with focal lesions of the visual pathways provides a unique opportunity to assess the development of visual memory when perceptual input is degraded. We assessed visual recognition and visual memory

Phospholipase A₂: the key to reversing long-term memory impairment in a gastropod model of aging.

Memory failure associated with changes in neuronal circuit functions rather than cell death is a common feature of normal aging in diverse animal species. The (neuro)biological foundations of this phenomenon are not well understood although oxidative stress, particularly in the guise of lipid peroxidation, is suspected to play a key role. Using an invertebrate model system of age-associated memory impairment that supports direct correlation between behavioral deficits and changes in the underlying neural substrate, we show that inhibition of phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)) abolishes both long-term

Mechanisms of amnesia induced by impairment of long-term memory reconsolidation in edible snail.

Involvement of neurotransmitter receptors and translation and transcription processes in reconsolidation of conditioned food aversion memory was investigated in experiments on edible snails. Injections of neurotransmitter receptor antagonists and protein synthesis inhibitors before the reminder session were found to induce amnesia that was characterized by the possibility of memory recovery in repeated training and under the effect of mnemotropic agent D-cycloserine (early stage of amnesia) or by resistance to the mentioned actions (late stage). It has been shown that amnesia induction by memo

Long-term sequelae of critical illness: memories and health-related quality of life.

Impaired health-related quality of life after critical illness has been demonstrated in a number of studies. It is not clear exactly how or why critical illness and intensive care lead to impaired health status, but understanding this association is an important step to improving long-term outcomes of the critically ill. There is growing evidence that neuro-psychological symptoms play a significant role in this impairment and that management of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) may influence these symptoms. This commentary examines a recent study and places this study in the context of

Long-term potentiation in bone--a role for glutamate in strain-induced cellular memory?

BACKGROUND: The adaptive response of bone cells to mechanical strain is a primary determinant of skeletal architecture and bone mass. In vivo mechanical loading induces new bone formation and increases bone mineral density whereas disuse, immobilisation and weightlessness induce bone loss. The potency of mechanical strain is such that a single brief period of loading at physiological strain magnitude is able to induce a long-lasting osteogenic response that lasts for days. Although the process of mechanotransduction in bone is incompletely understood, observations that responses to mechanical

Impaired short- and long-term memory in Ts65Dn mice, a model for Down syndrome.

Ts65Dn (TS), control littermates (CO) and Swiss (SW) male mice were tested in the elevated plus-maze and in the Morris water maze (MWM) for memory evaluation. In the plus-maze, each mouse was placed at the end of an open arm and initial freezing and the time to enter into an enclosed arm (transfer latency) were measured. SW mice decreased both measures over repeated trials, whereas no decrease of freezing was observed in CO mice, thus suggesting increased emotionality in this group. Compared to CO mice, TS mice showed less initial freezing, shorter transfer latencies, and spent less time in en

To separate the influence of inattentiveness from memory, we examined savings scores on material previously learned in 53 children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), 63 with a reading disability (RD), 63 with both ADHD and RD combined, and 112 controls. Children with reading disabilities were impaired in their ability to remember previously-learned material unless it was repeated over four trials, whereas children with only ADHD performed as well as the controls for material presented only once. Chronic psychosocial stress accelerates impairment of long-term memory and late-phase long-term potentiation in an at-risk model of Alzheimer's disease.

Although it is generally agreed that Aβ contributes to the pathogenesis of AD, its precise role in AD and the reason for the varying intensity and time of onset of the disease have not been elucidated. In addition to genetic factors, environmental issues such as stress may also play a critical role in the etiology of AD. This study examined the effect of chronic psychosocial stress in an at-risk (treatment with a subpathogenic dose of Aβ; "subAβ") rat model of AD on long-term memory by three techniques: memory tests in the radial arm water maze, electrophysiological recordings of synaptic plas
