Autobiographical memory retrieval and appraisal in social anxiety disorder.

Individuals with social anxiety disorder (SADs; n = 41) and healthy controls (HCs; n = 40) were administered the Waterloo Images and Memories Interview, in which they described mental images that they tend to experience in both anxiety-provoking and non-anxiety-provoking social situations. Participants then recalled, in as much detail as possible, specific autobiographical memories of salient aversive and non-aversive social experiences that they believed led to the formation of these images. Audio-recorded memory narratives were transcribed and coded based on the procedure of the Autobiograph

Fear of memories: the nature of panic in posttraumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Although there is increasing evidence that panic attacks are common in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), little is known if posttraumatic panic is comparable to panic attacks observed in panic disorder (PD). OBJECTIVE: This study examined the cognitive responses to panic attacks in participants with PD and PTSD. METHOD: Participants with PD (n=22) and PTSD (n=18) were assessed on the Anxiety Disorder Interview Schedule for DSM-IV and subsequently administered the Agoraphobic Cognitions Questionnaire and a measure of fears related to trauma memories. RESULTS: Although partici

Functional imaging of emotional memory in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVES: Although in current diagnostic criteria there exists a distinction between bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, many patients manifest features of both disorders, and it is unclear which aspects, if any, confer diagnostic specificity. In the present study, we investigate whether there are differences in medial temporal lobe (MTL) activation in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. We also investigate associations between activation levels and symptom severity across the disorders. METHODS: Functional magnetic resonance imaging scans were conducted on 14 healthy controls, 14 patients

Cognitive memory control in borderline personality disorder patients.

BACKGROUND: It has been demonstrated that the mechanism of cognitive memory control in humans is sustained by the hippocampus and prefrontal cortices, which have been found to be structurally and functionally abnormal in borderline personality disorder (BPD). We investigated whether the memory control mechanism is affected in BPD. METHOD: Nineteen Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)-IV BPD patients and 19 matched healthy controls (HC) performed a specific think/no-think paradigm exploring the capacity of remembering and suppressing pair of words previously learned. Impairment of memory organization in patients with schizophrenia or schizotypal disorder.

Verbal learning and the organization of memory in patients with schizophrenia or schizotypal disorder were compared with normal subjects. Three indices of memory organization (semantic clustering, serial clustering, and subjective clustering) were calculated from participants' responses on the Japanese Verbal Learning Test. Schizophrenic and schizotypal patients showed similar decrements in semantic organization compared with normal subjects. Neither patient group showed any effect of learning on their use of semantic organization, although both groups recalled more items as the number of tria

Evidence that mnesic states govern normal and disordered memory.

Although it is recognized that retrieval may be state-dependent, only recently has a paradigm been identified that allows state-dependence in rats to be demonstrated reliably and at relevant doses of CNS agents. In humans, the effects of scopolamine constitute a valuable model of disordered memory. We used this paradigm to analyze the effects of scopolamine on different memory processes. Rats treated with either saline or 0.01-10 mg/kg doses of scopolamine learned to lever press for milk reward, and were then tested for retrieval while given the same or a different treatment. Saline-to-scopola

The long-term memory sign: A clinical marker of functional cognitive disorders.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the clinical utility of the long-term memory sign (LTMS), which is defined as self-reported long-term memory loss that is equal to or greater than self-reported short-term memory loss, and hypothesized to be a sign of functional cognitive disorders. METHOD: The LTMS was established using two standardized clinical interview prompts in 568 consecutive patients (MAGE = 64.25, SD = 13.03) referred for neuropsychological evaluation. Patients were categorized into five diagnostic groups: dementia (n = 140), mild neurocognitive disorder (n = 245), primary psychiatric d

Emerging roles for long noncoding RNAs in learning, memory and associated disorders.

While protein-coding genes have been widely studied in learning and memory, the role of the non-coding genome has only recently been investigated. With advances in high throughput sequencing technologies and functional profiling methods, multiple long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been functionally and mechanistically linked with neurobiological processes related with learning and memory, as well disorders that lead to memory impairment. However, these macromolecules are still a subject of controversy and intense scrutiny regarding the proper criteria for determining their functionality and th

Verbal learning and memory impairment in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies using the California Verbal Learning Test-Children's Version (CVLT-C) to examine effects of heavy prenatal alcohol exposure on verbal learning and memory have reported impaired information acquisition (i.e., encoding), rather than retrieval, as the primary mechanism underlying learning and memory impairment. We administered the CVLT-C to 2 independent cohorts to determine whether (i) effects on encoding are also seen at moderate exposure levels, using both categorical (diagnostic/exposure group) and continuous exposure measures; (ii) these deficits are specific or

Visual memory and sustained attention impairment in youths with autism spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: An uneven neurocognitive profile is a hallmark of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Studies focusing on the visual memory performance in ASD have shown controversial results. We investigated visual memory and sustained attention in youths with ASD and typically developing (TD) youths. METHOD: We recruited 143 pairs of youths with ASD (males 93.7%; mean age 13.1, s.d. 3.5 years) and age- and sex-matched TD youths. The ASD group consisted of 67 youths with autistic disorder (autism) and 76 with Asperger's disorder (AS) based on the DSM-IV criteria. They were assessed using the Cambrid

Role of visuo-spatial working memory in path integration disorders in neglect.

This paper investigates the relationship between memory deficits and navigational ability in neglect. In recent studies (Piccardi et al., 2008a, 2010; Bianchini et al., 2010), a dissociation was found in visuo-spatial memory for peripersonal/reaching space and visuo-spatial memory for navigational space, suggesting that the latter is processed by a specific system devoted to storing environmental information for navigational purposes (Piccardi et al., 2010). Specific deficits have also been described in neglect patients in navigational tasks requiring to memorize and retrieve a target location

[Memory disorders in epileptic patients. A study of pre-postsurgical follow-up].

In general terms, epileptic patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) show mnesic deficits. In the case of medically intractable epilepsy (around 20%) the neurosurgery intervention is a widely accepted treatment. The cognitive effects of surgery have been reported in last years; they emphasize the mnesic positive changes of contralateral area. In the same sense they have reported a negative change on mnesic modality in ipsilateral area. This paper present a study in which the mnesic deficits of twenty eight pharmaco resistant epileptic patients have been evaluated and followed up. These patie

Memory systems analyses of mnemonic disorders in aging and age-related diseases.

The effects upon memory of normal aging and two age-related neurodegenerative diseases, Alzheimer disease (AD) and Parkinson disease, are analyzed in terms of memory systems, specific neural networks that mediate specific mnemonic processes. An occipital memory system mediating implicit visual-perceptual memory appears to be unaffected by aging or AD. A frontal system that may mediate implicit conceptual memory is affected by AD but not by normal aging. Another frontal system that mediates aspects of working and strategic memory is affected by Parkinson disease and, to a lesser extent, by agin

Working memory in social anxiety disorder: better manipulation of emotional versus neutral material in working memory.

Individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) engage in post-event processing, a form of perseverative thinking. Given that deficits in working memory might underlie perseverative thinking, we examined working memory in SAD with a particular focus on the effects of stimulus valence. SAD (n = 31) and healthy control (n = 20) participants either maintained (forward trials) or reversed (backward trials) in working memory the order of four emotional or four neutral pictures, and we examined sorting costs, which reflect the extent to which performance deteriorated on the backward trials compared t

Similarities and differences in working memory and neurometabolism of obsessive-compulsive disorder and major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) both showed cognitive impairment, and the altered neurometabolic may associate with cognitive impairment. However, there are limited comparative working memory (WM) and neuroimaging studies on these two disorders. Therefore, we investigated the characteristics of WM and neurometabolic changes in patients with OCD and MDD. METHODS: A total of 64 unmedicated patients (32 OCD and 32 MDD), and 33 healthy controls (HC) were included to conduct WM assessment comprising Digit Span Test (DST), 2-back task and Stroop C

Memory mood congruency phenomenon in bipolar I disorder and major depression disorder patients.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate memory performance in tasks with and without affective content (to confirm the mood congruency phenomenon) in acutely admitted patients with bipolar I disorder (BD) and major depression disorder (MDD) and in healthy participants. Seventy-eight participants (24 BD, 29 MDD, and 25 healthy controls) were evaluated. Three word lists were used as the memory task with affective content (positive, negative and indifferent). Psychiatric symptoms were also evaluated with rating scales (Young Mania Rating Scale for mania and Hamilton Depression Rating S

Analyzing the effects of memory biases and mood disorders on social performance.

Realistic models of decision-making and social interactions, considering the nature of memory and biases, continue to be an area of immense interest. Emotion and mood are a couple of key factors that play a major role in decisions, nature of social interactions, size of the social network, and the level of engagement. Most of the prior work in this direction focused on a single trait, behavior, or bias. However, this work builds an integrated model that considers multiple traits such as loneliness, the drive to interact, the memory, and mood biases in an agent. The agent system comprises of ra

Relationship between cortical thickness and fluency in the memory disorders clinic population.

As brain networks break down in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, language and executive function frequently decline. We aimed to quantify the relationship between fluency (both categorical and phonemic) and cortical thickness using data from a large cohort of patients who were undergoing assessment at a memory disorders clinic. In addition, we defined the pattern of these relationships across the four major lobes of the brain. A total of 590 patients underwent extensive psychometric testing, including categorical (animal-naming) and phonemic (FAS) tests of fluency. All

Effectiveness of a working memory intervention program in children with language disorders.

The aim of this study was twofold: first, to obtain a neuropsychological characterization of children with language disorders, and second, to evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention program on working memory. We used a pretest-instruction-posttest design, carefully identifying a sample of 32 children with language disorders whom we then evaluated for short-term verbal and visuospatial memory, verbal and visuospatial working memory, attention, processing speed, and lexical-semantic skills. We then implemented an intervention program on working memory consisting of 72 sessions of 15 minute
