Visual Dysfunction after Repetitive Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in a Mouse Model and Ramifications on Behavioral Metrics.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality with a poorly understood pathophysiology. Animal models have been increasingly utilized to better understand mTBI and recent research has identified visual deficits in these models that correspond to human literature. While visual impairment is being further characterized within TBI, the implications of impaired vision on behavioral tasks commonly utilized in animal models has not been well described thus far. Visual deficits may well confound behavioral tests that are believed to be isolated to cognitive functionin

Visual perception and memory impairments in children at risk of nonverbal learning disabilities.

Visuospatial working memory (VSWM) and visual perception were examined in two groups aged 11-13, one with children displaying symptoms of nonverbal learning disability (NLD) (n = 18) and the other a control group without learning disabilities (n = 18). The two groups were matched for general verbal abilities, age, gender, and socioeconomic level. The children were presented with VSWM tests involving visual and spatial-simultaneous processes, and also with a classical visual illusion, a classical ambiguous figure, as well as visual perception tests specifically devised for the present study. High intraocular pressure produces learning and memory impairments in rats.

Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Previous MRI studies have revealed that POAG can be associated with alterations in hippocampal function. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate a relationship between chronic high intraocular pressure (IOP) and hippocampal changes in a rat model. We used behavioural tests to assess learning and memory ability, and additionally investigated the hippocampal expression of pathological amyloid beta (Aβ), phospho-tau, and related pathway proteins. Chronic high IOP impaired learning and memory in rats

Forebrain-Specific Loss of BMPRII in Mice Reduces Anxiety and Increases Object Exploration.

To investigate the role of Bone Morphogenic Protein Receptor Type II (BMPRII) in learning, memory, and exploratory behavior in mice, a tissue-specific knockout of BMPRII in the post-natal hippocampus and forebrain was generated. We found that BMPRII mutant mice had normal spatial learning and memory in the Morris water maze, but showed significantly reduced swimming speeds with increased floating behavior. Further analysis using the Porsolt Swim Test to investigate behavioral despair did not reveal any differences in immobility between mutants and controls. In the Elevated Plus Maze, BMPRII mu

Modern scores for traditional tests - Review of the diagnostic potential of scores derived from word list learning tests in mild cognitive impairment and early Alzheimer's Disease.

Episodic memory impairment is one of the early hallmarks in Alzheimer's Disease. In the clinical diagnosis and research, episodic memory impairment is typically assessed using word lists that are repeatedly presented to and recalled by the participant across several trials. Until recently, total learning scores, which consist of the total number of words that are recalled by participants, were almost exclusively used for diagnostic purposes. The present review aims at summarizing evidence on additional scores derived from the learning trials which have recently been investigated more frequentl

Temporal lobe thickness and verbal memory in first-degree relatives of individuals with schizophrenia.

Cortical thinning in frontal and temporal regions has been reported in individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia and, less consistently, among their unaffected first-degree relatives. Likewise, first-degree relatives demonstrate attenuated differences in neurocognitive performance relative to healthy controls, indicating that neurocognitive performance may be an important endophenotype of the disorder. Less is known about how cortical thickness relates to neurocognitive performance in these individuals. Given the robust nature of temporal structural abnormalities in schizophrenia, this study ai

Implicit strategy affects learning in children with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Learning and memory deficits are commonly reported in children with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure. Our recent work suggested that children with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure retained information as well as controls on a verbal learning test but not on a test of nonverbal learning and memory. To better understand the cause of this differential pattern of performance, the current study re-analyzed data from our previous study to determine if the presence of an implicit learning strategy may account, at least in part, for the finding of spared retention. METHODS: The current stud

Electromagnetic field protects against cognitive and synaptic plasticity impairment induced by electrical kindling in rats.

Kindling results in abnormal synaptic potentiation and significant impairment in learning and memory. Electromagnetic field (EMF) effects on learning and memory in kindled animals and its effects on hippocampal neural activity are largely unknown. In the current study, the effects of EMF on learning and memory, as well as hippocampal synaptic plasticity, in kindled rats were investigated. EMF (10 mT; 100 Hz) was applied to fully kindled animals one hour/day for a period of one week. The behavioral and electrophysiological studies were performed 24 h following the EMF application. The kindled r

Astrocyte activation contributes to exertional heatstroke-induced learning and memory impairment in mice.

Exertional heatstroke (EHS) is a life-threatening medical condition with a high mortality rate, characterized by dysfunction of the central nervous system, including memory impairment. Astrocytes have been reported to be closely related to learning and memory process. However, the role of astrocytes in EHS has not been elucidated. In this study, an EHS mouse model was established to recapitulate the physical state of human in severe environment of high temperature and humidity. EHS mice showed significant memory decline in novel location recognition and shuttle box tests. To investigate the un

Spider toxin (JSTX-3) inhibits the memory retrieval of passive avoidance tests.

The effect of a spider toxin (JSTX-3)--a specific blocker of quisqualate sensitive type of glutamate receptors--on learning and memory was studied in mice using passive avoidance tests (step-through and step-down tests) and the water maze test. JSTX-3 was injected into lateral ventricles of chronically cannulated mice at a dose of 22.2 pmol/brain, which did not produce any apparent behavioral changes. This chemical significantly impaired the retrieval of memory in the step-through test and showed a similar (though not statistically significant) tendency in the step-down test, but it had no eff

Does memory impairment exist in narcolepsy-cataplexy?

Approximately one-half of patients with the narcolepsy-cataplexy syndrome suffer from subjective memory problems, mainly involving recent events. Ten untreated narcoleptic patients (7 male, 3 female, aged 28-65 years) with such problems and 10 matched controls were given a battery of tests to study the complaint. Tests included the digit span, Knox cube, recurring figures (verbal and nonverbal), visual reproduction, paired associates learning and logical memory test, plus naming and fluency tests to control for language capabilities. No significant intergroup differences were found. It is conc

Probing sensorimotor memory through the human speech-audiomotor system.

Our knowledge of human sensorimotor learning and memory is predominantly based on the visuospatial workspace and limb movements. Humans also have a remarkable ability to produce and perceive speech sounds. We asked whether the human speech-auditory system could serve as a model to characterize the retention of sensorimotor memory in a workspace that is functionally independent of the visuospatial one. Using adaptation to altered auditory feedback, we investigated the durability of a newly acquired speech-acoustical memory (8- and 24-h delay), its sensitivity to the manner of acquisition (abrup
