"Cycles of Clockwork Precision": Hormonal Contraception and Natural Menstruation.

When the birth control pill was introduced at the beginning of the 1960s, it was primarily used to regulate women's menstrual cycles. Medical historians have argued that such a naturalised menstrual cycle did not exist until hormonal products were used to regulate it. Menstrual irregularities had been the go-to indication for hormonal products, long before hormones were specifically produced for contraceptive purposes. This paper traces the concurrent development of the notion of a "natural cycle" and respective marketing strategies to promote Sequilar, the first sequential birth control pill

Mood Swing during Menstruation: Confounding Factors and Drug Use.

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a physiologic process in women where mood swing is one of the symptoms influencing the psycho-emotional, physical, and behavioral reactions exhibited by women during menstruation. This study elucidates the effect of mood swing, confounding factors and healthcare-seeking behaviors of women in an educational environment. METHODS: Exactly 328 women who were within reproductive ages 16 and 35 years participated in this study. A survey method was adopted; validated and standardized questionnaires were administered to confidentially assess the effect of mo

Correlation between glycemic control and menstruation in diabetic adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if a correlation exists between the degree of glycemic control in insulin-dependent diabetic adolescents and menstrual regulation. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review of charts of diabetic girls aged 10-18 was performed. Office visits were scheduled every three to six months, at which time pubertal development, menstrual function, growth and diabetic control, including hemoglobin (Hgb) A1C, and complications were assessed. Forty-six patients were eligible for data analysis. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including chi 2 and Student t tests, were applied. RES

Young women's attitudes toward continuous use of oral contraceptives: the effect of priming positive attitudes toward menstruation on women's willingness to suppress menstruation.

The present study investigated American women's attitudes toward menstrual suppression and the effect of priming attitudes toward menstruation on women's willingness to suppress menstruation. One hundred college women randomly were assigned to either a positive priming group or a negative priming group. The positive priming group first completed the menstrual joy questionnaire (MJQ) followed by a willingness to suppress menstruation (WSM) questionnaire, the beliefs and attitudes toward menstruation (BATM) questionnaire, the menstrual distress questionnaire (MDQ), and a demographic questionnair

Induction of menstruation in mice reveals the regulation of menstrual shedding.

During menstruation, an inner layer of the endometrium is selectively shed, while an outer, progenitor-containing layer is preserved to support repeated regeneration. Progress in understanding this compartmentalization has been hindered by the lack of suitable animal models, as mice and rats do not menstruate. Here, we present transgenic mouse models that recapitulate the key anatomical, functional, and transcriptional features of human menstruation through targeted chemogenetic activation of premenstrual differentiation. Using single-cell spatial transcriptomics, we define a new paradigm for

S100A8 and S100A9 are associated with endometrial shedding during menstruation.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their major source, endometrial stromal cells (ESCs), play important roles in menstruation. However, other mechanisms in endometrial shedding may be unexplored. This study focused on four proteins: S100A8 and S100A9 (alarmins) are binding partners and induce MMPs, MMP-3 cycle-dependently plays a key role in the proteolytic cascade, and CD147, which has S100A9 as its ligand, induces MMPs. Immunostaining for these proteins was performed on 118 resected specimens. The percentage and location of each positive reaction in ESCs were measured and compared using Im

Catamenial Pneumothorax: A Rare Diagnosis Among Menstruating Women.

Catamenial Pneumothorax is a rare condition often associated with endometriosis in menstruating women. Due to the rarity of this condition, its etiology is not well studied and, thus, effective treatment regimens have not been well established. We present a case of a 21-year-old female with no significant past medical history who developed recurrent episodes of spontaneous pneumothorax, chronologically associated with her menstrual cycle. This pattern is known as the sine qua non criteria and is one of the only established criteria in current literature for diagnosing catamenial pneumothorax.

Acute and Preventive Management of Migraine during Menstruation and Menopause.

Migraine course is influenced by female reproductive milestones, including menstruation and perimenopause; menstrual migraine (MM) represents a distinct clinical entity. Increased susceptibility to migraine during menstruation and in perimenopause is probably due to fluctuations in estrogen levels. The present review provides suggestions for the treatment of MM and perimenopausal migraine. MM is characterized by long, severe, and poorly treatable headaches, for which the use of long-acting triptans and/or combined treatment with triptans and common analgesics is advisable. Short-term prophylax

Metabolic assessment of menstruating and nonmenstruating normal weight adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Resumption of menses (ROM) is a key indicator of recovery in AN, but patients may remain amenorrheic despite weight restoration. The objective of this study is to better understand the mechanism of amenorrhea in patients with eating disorders. METHOD: A retrospective chart review was conducted of 382 normal weight adolescents with a history of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or eating disorder not otherwise specified, who had been referred for indirect calorimetry tests. Resting energy expenditure (REE) was compared between amenorrheic (n = 60) and regularly menstruating females

Women in war: operational issues of menstruation and unintended pregnancy.

With rapid and frequent deployments around the world, the current high level of military operations demands combat readiness of every military member. In the U.S. Armed Forces, women represent 15% of active duty troops and 17% of reserve and Guard troops and are a critical component for mission accomplishment. The operational issues of menstruation and unintended pregnancy, unique to this population, can decrease a female member's military readiness and affect her ability to deploy. Strategies to mitigate and even eliminate these concerns include the optional use of hormonal medications to ind

Extended and continuous use of hormonal contraceptives to reduce menstruation.

During the use of long-cycle regimens of monophasic oral contraceptives, the total number of bleeding and cycle-dependent complaints is considerably lower than during conventional treatment with oral contraceptives. Despite an initially higher rate of irregular bleeding, the majority of women prefer the long-cycle treatment since it may improve quality of life. As this regimen provides an enhanced ovarian suppression, it may prevent pregnancies, especially in noncompliant women or patients who are concomitantly treated with drugs that may impair the efficacy of oral contraceptives. Why do women menstruate? Historical and evolutionary review.

Theories regarding the significance of menstruation from the time of Aristotle to the present are reviewed, followed by a brief description of the evolutionary changes in the uterus. A specific duct for the transport of ova first appears in jawed fishes. Its important role in the evolution of internal fertilisation and the protection and nourishment of the embryo is followed through the vertebrate orders, amphibia, reptiles and mammals. The problems associated with the presence of a gamete or zygote of different genetic make up inside the maternal tract is stressed, and the mechanisms to overc
