[An unusual case of panarteritis nodosa associated with chronic mercury poisoning (author's transl)].

In a 50-year-old woman, working as a dental assistant for more than ten years, chronic mercury poisoning developed insidiously, apparently from careless handling of mercury-amalgam. The main signs consisted of mental and neurological changes such as erethism, tremor and mercurial psellism. Peripheral arterial circulatory disorders occurred in the course of the disease, as well as abdominal colic and a polyneuropathy, which provided the first clues to panarteritis nodosa subsequently confirmed histologically.

Selenoprotein P as the major transporter for mercury in serum from methylmercury-poisoned rats.

Selenium (Se) has been found to promote weight gain, decrease hepatic damage, but redistribute mercury (Hg) in brains and livers in methylmercury (MeHg)-poisoned rats. The aims of the present work were to examine the effects of Se on the levels of Hg in serum and the role of serum selenoproteins in binding with Hg in MeHg-poisoned rats. The concentration of Se, Hg and MeHg were studied using ICP-MS and CVAFS. The Hg- and Se-binding selenoproteins were separated and quantified using affinity chromatography with post-column isotope dilution analysis using both enriched 78Se and 199Hg. It was fou

Mercury poisoning in women and infants inhabiting the Gangetic plains of Bihar: risk assessment.

Mercury is a persistent, bio-accumulative, and hazardous contaminant. When released into the environment, it accumulates in water sediments, converting it to poisonous methylmercury that enters the food chain. The present study was carried out in habitations from the 11 districts of Bihar (India). In the study, n = 224 lactating women and their infants n = 172 infants participated. After obtaining the written informed consent, their breast milk, urine, and blood were collected for mercury estimation. The breastmilk content was measured in n = 181 subjects, in which 74% women had their breastmi

A Diagnostic and Management Challenge in Severe Fatal Mercury Poisoning Secondary to Homeopathic Medications.

We present a case of a patient known to have rheumatoid arthritis with severe nephrotic syndrome very likely due to chronic mercury poisoning. She was known to have rheumatoid arthritis for 10 years. Mercury poisoning was attributed to homeopathic Ayurvedic medicine which she took for arthritic pain. It is highly likely that the Ayurvedic medications contained high concentrations of mercury. The patient presented with worsening breathlessness on exertion and global pitting oedema. Initial investigations suggested a nephrotic syndrome of unknown aetiology. The patient's kidney function worsened

Minamata disease revisited: an update on the acute and chronic manifestations of methyl mercury poisoning.

The first well-documented outbreak of acute methyl mercury (MeHg) poisoning by consumption of contaminated fish occurred in Minamata, Japan, in 1953. The clinical picture was officially recognized and called Minamata disease (MD) in 1956. However, 50 years later there are still arguments about the definition of MD in terms of clinical symptoms and extent of lesions. We provide a historical review of this epidemic and an update of the problem of MeHg toxicity. Since MeHg dispersed from Minamata to the Shiranui Sea, residents living around the sea were exposed to low-dose MeHg through fish consu

Beyond acrodynia: infantile mercury vapor poisoning presenting with refractory hypoglycemia and persistent neurological damage.

Infantile elemental mercury poisoning is clinically rare and poses a severe long-term health threat. This report describes a rare case of non-accidental infantile elemental mercury poisoning, in which the infant was continuously exposed to mercury vapor for 20 days starting from postnatal day 15. The infant initially presented with feeding difficulties and respiratory symptoms, which rapidly progressed to respiratory distress and seizure-like episodes at 5 months of age; laboratory tests revealed severe hypoglycemia and metabolic acidosis. Despite 5 days of intravenous glucose infusion and com

Membranous nephropathy due to chronic mercury poisoning from traditional Indian medicines: report of five cases.

Mercury contained in traditional medicines can cause chronic poisoning, which can cause membranous nephropathy (MN). We report five cases of nephrotic syndrome caused by MN with evidence of chronic mercury poisoning due to consumption of traditional Indian medicines such as Siddha and Ayurveda, which to our knowledge are the first such reports. All patients were seronegative for antibodies against phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R). Two patients, who had severe nephrotic syndrome, had received Siddha medicine for prolonged period and oral chelation with dimercaptopropane-1-sulfonic acid was suc

Neurologic features of chronic minamata disease (organic mercury poisoning) and incidence of complications with aging.

To elucidate the neurologic features of chronic Minamata disease, and the incidence of complications with aging, we studied 80 patients with documented Minamata disease (organic mercury poisoning) from 1986 to 1994 (mean age: 63 years). Of the cardinal neurologic findings, sensory impairment was seen with highest frequency in 98.8% of patients limited to the extremities in 86.3%. Impairment of lower extremity coordination was observed in 60%, constriction of the visual field in 51.9%, and retrocochlear hearing loss in 41%. To assess age-related complications, patients were separated into three

A new mass screening method for methylmercury poisoning using mercury-volatilizing bacteria from Minamata Bay.

A simplified mass screening method for methylmercury exposure was developed using methylmercury-volatilizing bacteria from Minamata Bay. Some bacteria can transform methylmercury into mercury vapor. Most mercury in the hair is methylmercury, which is readily extracted with HCl solution. Black spots are formed on X-ray film due to the reduction of Ag(+) emulsion with mercury vapor produced by methylmercury-volatilizing bacteria. By exploiting these characteristics, a screening method was developed, whereby the fur of rats injected with methylmercury chloride formed clear black spots on X-ray fi

Mercury poisoning in a fisherman working on a pelagic fishing vessel due to excessive tuna consumption.

OBJECTIVE: To report the case of a fisherman who developed chronic mercury poisoning due to excessive consumption of tuna while working on a pelagic fishing vessel. CASE REPORT: A 48-year-old male deep-sea fisherman developed paresthesia and pain in both legs while working at sea. He continued working for over 4 months on a pelagic fishing vessel but was eventually unable to function normally as his condition deteriorated. Upon arrival on land, he received specialist treatment, including imaging studies, for 2 months; however, the cause of the symptoms was not identified. An examination of hi

Elevated mercury bound to serum proteins in methylmercury poisoned rats after selenium treatment.

Methylmercury is a toxic pollutant and is generated by microbial methylation of elemental or inorganic mercury in the environment. Previous study found decreased hepatic MDA levels and urinary mercury levels in methylmercury poisoned rats after sodium selenite treatment. This study further found increased mercury levels in serum samples from methylmercury poisoned rats after selenium treatment. By using size exclusion chromatography coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, three Hg- binding protein fractions and two Se-binding protein fractions were identified with the molecula

Differential diagnosis between organic and inorganic mercury poisoning in human cases--the pathologic point of view.

Differences in pathology were found between acute and chronic exposure to methylmercury, mercury vapor, and inorganic mercury. Characteristic pathologic changes produced by organic mercury in the brain have previously been described in patients with Minamata disease. The brains of patients who presented with acute onset of symptoms and died within 2-mo showed loss of neurons with reactive proliferation of glial cells, microcavitation, vascular congestion, petechial hemorrhage, and edema in the cerebral cortices, predominantly in the calcarine, pre- and postcentral, and transverse temporal cort

Spontaneous exfoliation of teeth following severe elemental mercury poisoning: case report and histological investigation for mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Although the spontaneous exfoliation of teeth and breakdown of oral tissues from severe mercury intoxication have been noted for over a century, there are no published reports investigating the mechanisms of these phenomena. Severe mercury poisoning is rare in modern times, but it does occur. We present a case report and a histopathologic investigation into the mechanism of the associated tooth loss. METHODS: An exfoliated tooth and periodontal and gingival tissues were obtained from a 15-month-old patient who had been severely intoxicated with elemental mercury over a period of m
