Avelumab (Bavencio®) is a fully human IgG1 monoclonal antibody that is directed against programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1). Avelumab functions as an immune checkpoint inhibitor and has recently been approved in the USA, the EU and Japan for the treatment of metastatic Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC). It is thus the first therapeutic agent specifically approved for use in this indication, and is approved for use independent of line of treatment. Approval for avelumab in metastatic MCC was based on the two-part, single-arm, phase II trial, JAVELIN Merkel 200. In Part A of the study, confirmed ob

BACKGROUND: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare cutaneous malignancy of neuroendocrine origin, with about 30 cases of brain metastasis (BM) reported in the literature. Historically, the treatment of neurometastatic MCC has largely included chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The aim was to investigate predictors of overall survival (OS) in neurometastatic MCC.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, we surveyed institutional databases and conducted a systematic review of the literature to identify cases reporting on management of distant MCC BM. A pooled survival analysis was performed on the inst

Merkel cell carcinoma is a rare aggressive primary cutaneous neuroendocrine tumor. It is associated mostly with malignant skin lesions. Rare cases in the literature described its association with benign skin adnexal lesions. We present here an additional case of Merkel cell carcinoma arising from an epidermal cyst located in the left arm of a 57-year-old male. The tumor was composed of lobules of monotonous round cells with dusty chromatin. It was positive for cytokeratin 20 and neuroendocrine markers. Patient was treated with surgical resection and radiation to the axilla. He is well and free

Merkel cell carcinoma is an aggressive skin malignancy. Primary Merkel cell carcinomas are treated by wide radical excision with or without adjuvant radiotherapy, while benefits of adjuvant chemotherapy remain doubtful. There are only several cases of gastrointestinal metastases of Merkel cell carcinoma reported so far. We report a case of recurrent Merkel cell carcinoma with metastases to the stomach and the small intestines after wide excision of primary Merkel cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive cutaneous malignancy with a high mortality rate. Diagnosis is often delayed.
OBJECTIVES: To characterize the dermoscopic features of MCC.
METHODS: Clinical and dermoscopic images of 12 biopsy-proven MCCs were analysed in a retrospective manner, with existing dermoscopic criteria being scored independently by three dermatologists.
RESULTS: The four most frequent clinical features were cherry red colour, shiny surface, sharp circumscription and nodular morphology. Significant dermoscopic features included linear irregular and polymorpho

Background. Merkel cell carcinoma of the head and neck is a rare and aggressive malignant tumour. Both the dermatological and surgical colleagues should be aware of this entity as lesions usually present on sun exposed areas of the skin such as the head and neck. Main Observation and Treatment. A 69-year-old male originally presented to the maxillofacial surgery department with a growing lesion on the left eyebrow. Histological analysis confirmed Merkel cell carcinoma and consequently surgical excision was carried out. A follow-up PET/CT scan 2 years later demonstrated a hotspot in the left pa

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare, aggressive cutaneous malignancy of the elderly and immunocompromised patients. It is occasionally found coexisting with other diseases, such as squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, actinic keratosis, miscellaneous adnexal tumors, and rarely Bowen disease. A 75-year-old woman presented with a 6-month history of an irregularly shaped erythematous patch on the left mandibular angle. Three months later, a 1.5×1.0 cm sized painless and rapidly growing erythematous nodule developed on the patch. Microscopically, the patch lesion was consistent with th

Primary Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a neuroendocrine tumor that typically affects older whites. It usually originates in the dermis, but in rare instances it has arisen in other primary sites, including the oral mucosa and the parotid gland. Explanations for the presence of MCC in these atypical locations have included theories of malignant transformation and neuroendocrine migration. We describe the case of a 35-year-old white woman who had an MCC in the parotid gland and no evidence of any other primary cutaneous lesion. A left superficial parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation was

BACKGROUND: Merkel Cell Carcinoma (MCC) is a rare neurendocrine tumor of cutaneous origin.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A 79-year-old woman was seen with a neck lump and a lesion in the left nasal vestibule. Biopsy of the lesion revealed a primary neurendocrine MCC of the skin of the nasal vestibule with metastases to the cervical lymph nodes. The patient decided against any further active treatment. Follow-up of patient for 30 months showed spontaneous regression of the lesions without any active treatment.
CONCLUSIONS: Although spontaneous resolution of MCC has been described for other head neck s

Merkel cell carcinoma is an aggressive neuroendocrine tumor historically thought to arise from neural crest-derived cutaneous neuroendocrine cells. Recent evidence supports an epidermal origin. We present a case of Merkel cell carcinoma arising on the upper arm of a 94-year-old woman that had multiple morphologic patterns: small cells typical of Merkel cell carcinoma, malignant cells with squamous differentiation and malignant poorly differentiated spindle cells. Subsequent metastatic disease in regional lymph nodes showed only the small cells and the malignant spindle cells. To our knowledge,

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive neuroendocrine tumor of the skin for which causative factors remain largely unknown. The site-specific risks of multiple primary cancers associated with MCC, which may provide insight into etiologic influences, have not been quantified in large population-based studies. We estimated the long-term risk of subsequent primary tumors after a first primary MCC (1,306 patients) and the risk of second primary MCC following other first primary cancers (2,048,739 patients) within 11 population-based cancer registries which report to the National Cancer Insti

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) has been shown to have a higher incidence in many etiologically distinct immunosuppressed populations. We report a case of aggressive MCC diagnosed in a man with autoimmune hepatitis who was treated with immunosuppressive therapy for more than 30 years.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an infrequent, highly malignant, primary skin tumor derived from neuroendocrine cells. Most MCCs occur in elderly individuals, on sun-exposed areas of the body, with the head and neck being the most common sites. We present 7 patients (2 male and 5 female, age 45-80 years) suffering from MCC and treated between 1993 and 2000. All tumors were located on the head and neck and varied from 0.9 to 2.3 cm in size. Five of the patients had stage II disease, 1 patient had stage Ia disease and 1 patient had stage III disease. Six of the patients had positive regional lymp

Merkel cell carcinoma (trabecular cell carcinoma) is a rare, distinct, primitive, neuroendocrine malignancy of the skin, usually affecting elderly patients. It develops from Merkel cells and nearly one out of every 10 Merkel cell carcinomas occurs in the eyelids and periocular region. The tumor manifests itself clinically as a bulging lesion near the lid margin, painless, reddish colored with teleangiectatic blood vessels on the surface. Histologically, the tumor can mimic malignant lymphoma, undifferentiated melanoma, sebaceous carcinoma or cutaneous metastases of pulmonary microcytoma. Immun

Merkel cell carcinoma is a primary cutaneous neuroendocrine carcinoma occurring commonly in the head and neck of middle-aged and elderly patients. While not very rare, this disease has never been reported in Taiwan. We report the clinical and pathologic features of three patients with Merkel cell carcinoma. The patients included one male (aged 56) and two females (aged 70, 80). The primary sites of the tumors were the hand in one patient and the head and neck in two. Two patients had regional lymph node metastasis. Case 1 had concurrent chronic arsenicalism with multiple Bowen's disease and sq

Four mixed Merkel cell and squamous cell carcinomas of the skin are described. The patients ranged in age from 74 to 90 years and demonstrated or had a history of previous ultraviolet or infrared damage to the skin, manifested by basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, actinic keratoses, solar elastosis, and erythema ab igne. Light microscopic examination of all 4 cases revealed invasive neoplasms consisting of 2 distinct but admixed cell types. The predominant cell type was consistent with Merkel cell carcinoma and was characterized by scant cytoplasm, a small dark polygonal nucleus wi

Chalcones, as flavonoid precursors, are known to have biological importance and vast pharmacological effects. These bioactive molecules have been used in traditional medicine for many years for treatment of various diseases, particularly because of their antitumor activity. The aim of this study was to assess antiproliferative activity of selected hydroxychalcones against six cancer cell lines, derived from various human organs and with varying degrees of aggressiveness and resistance to cytostatics (5637, A-431, UM-SCC-17A, SK-MEL-3, MCC13, A172) in comparison to two noncancerous cell lines (
