Mesenchymal Nonmeningothelial Tumors of the CNS: Evolving Molecular Landscape and Implications for Neuroradiologists.

The World Health Organization Classification of Tumors of the Central Nervous System, 5th edition (WHO CNS5) significantly revised the terminology and diagnostic criteria of "mesenchymal nonmeningothelial" tumors of CNS to better align with the classification of these soft tissue tumors outside the CNS. The CNS chapter only covers the entities with distinct histologic or molecular characteristics that occur exclusively or primarily in the CNS. These tumors usually arise from the meninges and are rarely intraparenchymal in origin, mainly in the supratentorial compartment. These tumors are group

Mesenchymal tumor-induced Fanconi syndrome: A novel classification of Fanconi syndrome.

RATIONALE: Fanconi syndrome (FS) caused by mesenchymal tumors is rarely reported, and these tumors are usually small and difficult to detect. However, if found and removed, the FS can be cured. PATIENT CONCERNS: Five patients were included in this study, and their clinical features, treatments, and prognoses of tumor-induced FS were reviewed and summarized. DIAGNOSES: Mesenchymal tumor-induced FS was diagnosed based on laboratory, imaging, and pathological examinations. INTERVENTIONS: We performed tumor resection surgery and administered a symptomatic treatment regimen that included neutral

Ectomesenchymal Chondromyxoid Tumor of the Anterior Tongue: A Case Image.

Ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumor (ECT) is a rare soft tissue tumor with peculiar histogenesis, exhibiting a predilection for the dorsum of the tongue. Molecular evidence suggests that it may originate from the migration of ectomesenchymal pluripotent cells from the neural crest to the tongue, where these cells may eventually proliferate and undergo myxoid and chondroid differentiation. This article illustrates a case of a 16-year-old female patient who presented with a nodule on the dorsum of her tongue, which had been present for four years. Surgical excision was performed, and histopathol

Germ cell, mesenchymal, and thymic tumors of the mediastinum.

Germ cell, mesenchymal, and thymic tumors of the mediastinum are an uncommon and heterogeneous group of neoplasms. Together they account for less than 25% of mediastinal tumors in childhood. The majority of these tumors are found in the anterior and superior mediastinum, but germ cell tumors and mesenchymal tumors may be located in all compartments. They share a broad range of histological subtypes and clinical behavior, tendency to be large in size, and a requirement for complete surgical excision as the major requirement for successful therapy.

Paratesticular rhabdomyosarcomas and leiomyosarcomas: a clinicopathological review.

One case of embryonal paratesticular sarcoma and 2 cases of leiomyosarcomas are reported. The 13-year-old boy with embryonal sarcoma is well after an orchiectomy and high ligation of the spermatic cord followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. A 66-year-old man has been doing well after orchiectomy and hemiscrotectomy for a paratesticular leiomyosarcoma. The third patient had a highly pleomorphic leiomyosarcoma and died 2 months postoperatively. The clinical and histological diagnosis of paratesticular rhabdomyosarcomas and leiomyosarcomas is reviewed and the various therapeutic approaches to

A mixed mesenchymal sarcoma in the soft palate of a dog: light and electron microscopic findings.

Soft tissue tumors containing a mixture of neoplastic fibrous tissue, cartilage, and bone have previously been classified as extraskeletal osteosarcomas in the dog. These tumors are often poorly differentiated, contain multiple neoplastic cell types, and might be more appropriately called mixed mesenchymal sarcomas. The present neoplasm caused clinical signs of stridorous respiration and dysphagia in a four and one-half year old dog. Four neoplastic cell types were demonstrated by light and electron microscopy.

[Resection of a Desmoid Tumor Originated from Greater Omentum with No History of Open Surgery].

Here we report a case of a 41-year-old male patient who underwent resection of a desmoid tumor originating from the greater omentum with no history of open surgery. An elastic hard mass was palpated in the left upper abdomen, but there were no abnormalities on serum chemical tests, including tumor markers. Computed tomography showed a parenchymal tumor located near the descending colon. Integrated positron-emission tomography and computed tomography revealed moderate accumulation of tracer in the tumor. An intra-abdominal malignant mesenchymoma was suspected and surgery was performed. The tumo

[Ossification of pulmonary tissue].

Two cases of pulmonary ossification found in postmortems were described. The first case, a 67-year-old stop-smoker with systemic hypertension died of a ruptured atherosclerotic aneurysm of the abdominal aorta. A well-defined subpleural mass (52 mm in max. dimension) was composed of monotonous mature trabecular osseous tissue with two focuses of cartilage up to 500 microns. There was no evidence of occluded blood supply and chronic passive congestion in the pulmonary parenchyma. A diagnosis of mesenchymoma (osteohamartoma) with the predominance of osseous tissue was made. The second case, a 72-

[A case of renal angiomyolipoma with bone formation].

A case of renal angiomyolipoma with bone formation is reported. A 61-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with one month history of fever. About 15 cm in diameter mass was palpated in her right lower abdomen. Plain abdominal roentgenography, ultrasonography and computed tomography showed marked calcification in the cephalic portion of the right kidney, tumors surrounding right kidney and another tumor in the right lower abdomen. All these tumors and the kidney constituted a big mass continuously, and no fatty component was demonstrated. Total excision of the mass including the kidney wa

Immunohistochemistry of soft tissue tumors: progress and prospects.

The immunohistochemical definition of soft tissue tumors has only begun (table 1). A number of antigens described here play a role in diagnostic pathology, and a few have been shown to be specific markers for certain types of cell differentiation. The detection of a wide variety of antigens in soft tissue sarcomas may initially prove confusing in some areas. For example, when specific markers are used, multidirectional differentiation in a tumor may be found more frequently than it is now, making more sarcomas actually "mesenchymomas." In such situations, certain types of differentiation may i

[Translocation-associated uterine mesenchymal tumors: The new without forgetting the old. An integrated diagnostic approach].

This review focuses on uterine mesenchymal tumors that are defined on a molecular level by a single and unique genetic alteration, that is somehow necessary and sufficient to allow tumor growth and progression. Although diverse from a clinical, morphological and immunohistochemical point of view, the different entities we are going to talk about share both a simple genomic profile with a low number of chromosomal alterations observed by CGH Array (few deletions, gains or amplifications...) and a low mutational burden observed by sequencing technics. Some of these entities are already well know

Ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumour of the posterior tongue.

Ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumor (ECMT) is a rare benign neoplasm arising in the tongue. With only 45 cases reported in the literature, there are several unique features defining this lesion. Firstly, almost all patients present with an asymptomatic slow growing mass on the anterior dorsum of the tongue. At the microscopic level, it is recognizable as a well-circumscribed unencapsulated proliferation of uniform round to fusiform cells embedded in a chondromyxoid matrix. Lastly, the immunohistochemistry profile is characterised by positivity for glial fibrillary acidic protein and frequent p

Tumor-induced osteomalacia.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia, also known as oncogenic osteomalacia, is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome in which vitamin D resistant osteomalacia occurs due to the presence of a tumor. The following case report describes a young woman who seeks a second opinion from a rheumatologist and is found to have oncogenic osteomalacia. Not often discussed in the rheumatology literature, oncogenic osteomalacia is a rare and interesting disease entity in which diagnosis is often more challenging than treatment.

Clinical and histopathological features of colonic stromal tumor in a child.

Neoplasms of the colonic submucosa are rare in children. Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are undifferentiated tumors, usually diagnosed by immunohistochemistry. We report a 4-year-old girl with a submucosal GIST of the ascending colon, which was detected by computed tomography. Diagnosis after ileocecal resection was established by histology. In addition, sections were examined immunohistochemically, using antibodies against vimentin, desmin, alpha-smooth muscle actin, S100, neuron-specific enolase, c-kit, and CD34. Hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections showed interlacing fascicles wi

Primary actinomycosis mimicking urachal carcinoma.

We report a case of urachal actinomycosis that presented with a progressively enlarging infraumbilical mass associated with umbilical discharge. Computed tomography revealed an extraperitoneal mass involving the dome of the bladder. The possible diagnosis included a malignant urachal neoplasm or chronic inflammatory mass. Partial cystectomy and excision of the mass was performed. The pathologic examination revealed actinomycosis. The patient was treated with a 6-month course of antibiotics. No recurrence was noted 1 year postoperatively.
