The prevalence and risk factors associated with gastrointestinal parasites in dogs were conducted in Blida, North-Central Algeria. The study was carried out over 131 clinically healthy dogs, from March to June 2019, by coprological methods. Of the 131 collected dogs, 61.07% (n = 80) were found infected by gastrointestinal parasites. Sixty-four dogs were carriers of a single infection with the following parasites Ancylostoma spp (15.27%), Uncinaria spp (14.50%) Toxocara canis (4.58%), Trichuris vulpis (3.82%), Toxascaris leonina (2.29%), Taenia/Echinococcus spp. (2.29%), Mesocestoides spp (0.76

Cestodes (class Cestoda) include zoonotic parasites such as Echinococcus spp. and Taenia spp., which cause significant morbidity and mortality in endemic regions, particularly among pastoral and rural populations in low-, upper-, and middle-income countries. Their developmental plasticity reflects finely tuned regulatory mechanisms controlling gene expression throughout complex life cycles and infection stages. Despite expanding genomic resources, functional postgenomic studies remain scarce. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are critical regulators of gene expression, influencing diverse developmental and p

Among the cestodes, Echinococcus granulosus, Echinococcus multilocularis and Taenia solium represent the most dangerous parasites. Their larval stages cause the diseases cystic echinococcosis (CE), alveolar echinococcosis (AE) and cysticercosis, respectively, which exhibit considerable medical and veterinary health concerns with a profound economic impact. Others caused by other cestodes, such as species of the genera Mesocestoides and Hymenolepis, are relatively rare in humans. In this review, we will focus on E. granulosus and E. multilocularis metacestode laboratory models and will review t

Mice chronically infected with 3 metazoan and 1 protozoan parasite contain in their circulation levels of IgG1 which are increased over the levels in uninfected mice by at least 10x. In the case of infection with the larval cestode, Mesocestoides corti, the serum IgG1 concentration can reach greater than 50 mg/ml and, with a half-life of less than 2 days, the number of cells engaged in IgG1 production is approximately 2 x 10(8). The IgG1 hypergammaglobulinaemia is not seen in infected hypothymic nude mice. Biosynthetic labelling studies with organ and tissue cultures established that in two of

The IgG1 molecules in the sera of IgG1 hypergammaglobulinaemic mice chronically infected with the larval cestode, Mesocestoides corti, are a heterogeneous population. Although antibodies to M. corti are present, the question of whether a minority or majority of the serum IgG1 molecules has anti-parasite reactivity remains open. The splenic PFC response to an intravenous injection of SRBC in M. corti-infected mice does not consist of an unusually high proportion of IgG1 anti-SRBC PFC. Moreover, the adoptive anti-DNP PFC response of spleen cells from M. corti-infected mice to DNP-M. corti is not

Mice infected with the parasite Mesocestoides corti develop hypergammaglobulinemia, hepatomegaly, and splenomegaly. The immune response to M. corti infection is directed, in part, at molecules secreted by the organism. Two of these molecules have been shown to be hsp70 and hsp60 homologues. In this study it was found that incubation of splenocytes from infected animals with M. corti-secreted molecules or the isolated M. corti hsp70 results in the expansion of an unusual cell type with the morphology of large granular lymphocytes. The cell lines express Thy-1, CD4 (low), and CD45RB but lack TCR

Free-ranging grey wolves (Canis lupus), which are presently recolonizing Italy, can be parasitized by a diversity of helminths, but have rarely been subject to studies of their parasites. Therefore, this study aims to determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths of road-killed grey wolves from the Piedmont region of Italy. Forty-two wolves were collected and examined for the presence of helminths. We recorded 12 helminth species: nine Nematoda and three Cestoda. The nematodes were: Ancylostoma caninum (7.1%), Capillaria sp. (2.4%), Molineus sp. (2.4%), Pterygodermatites affinis (11.9

While research on the parasitic fauna of wildlife in Greece is currently limited, conducted studies have provided valuable insights into the prevalence of parasitic infections in wild carnivores, omnivores, and herbivores. This review consolidates the existing data on the endoparasites detected in wild animals in Greece, specifically focusing on those that pose established or potential zoonotic risks. Over the last 60 years, various parasite species such as Leishmania infantum, Cryptosporidium spp., Toxoplasma gondii, Sarcocystis spp., Toxocara canis, Ancylostoma caninum, Capillaria spp., Bayl

Although local prevalence of Echinococcus multilocularis may be high, this zoonotic parasite has an overall low prevalence in foxes and rodents in Sweden. To better understand opportunities for E. multilocularis transmission in the Swedish environment, the aim of this study was to investigate other taeniid cestodes and to relate observed patterns to E. multilocularis. Cestode parasites were examined in fox feces and rodents caught in different habitats from four regions of Sweden. Arvicola amphibius and Microtus agrestis were parasitized with Versteria mustelae, Hydatigera taeniaeformis s. l.,

Tapeworm infections are among the most relevant parasitic diseases in humans and animals. Tapeworms from the Genus Echinococcus are particularly important as they can cause cystic or alveolar echinococcosis. A molecular screening was performed on 279 fecal samples collected from carcasses of wild carnivores from Central Italy using PCR targeting diagnostic fragments of nad1, rrnS, and nad5 genes. Samples positive for either Taenia spp. or Echinococcus granulosus were sequenced to taxonomically identify the parasitic DNA. Of the 279 samples, 134 (48.0%) gave positive results in the multiplex PC

The aim of the investigation was to estimate the epizootic situation concerning infection by the cestode Echinococcus multilocularis Leuckart, 1863 in dogs (Canis lupus familiaris Linnaeus) from a Polish region where this parasite is highly prevalent in red foxes. Faecal samples (n = 148) were collected from rural dogs in Podkarpackie Province. Samples were examined through nested PCR (for E. multilocularis), multiplex PCR (E. multilocularis, species of Taenia Linnaeus, 1758) and PCR [E. granulosus (Batsch, 1786)]. Specific products were sequenced. Faeces were also examined coproscopically. In

According to a previous report, the degree of the host immune response highly correlates with severity of the disease in the murine model for neurocysticercosis. In wild-type mice, Mesocestoides corti infection induced a rapid and extensive accumulation of gamma delta T cells and macrophages in the brain. NK cells, dendritic cells, alpha beta T cells, and B cells were also recruited to the brain but at lower levels. In contrast, gamma delta T-cell-deficient mice exhibited decreased cellular infiltration and reduced central nervous system (CNS) pathology. To understand the mechanisms of leukocy

Larval cestodiasis is characterized by aberrant migration and proliferation of larval cestodes in body cavities or tissues and is a rarely reported entity in domestic dogs. Cestodes of the genera Mesocestoides and Spirometra are reported as causative agents, and can cause tetrathyridiosis and proliferative sparganosis, respectively. Reported herein is a case of abdominal larval cestodiasis in a companion dog from Florida, USA. During routine ovariohysterectomy, larval cestodes were noted throughout the peritoneum. Histologically, the larvae were characterized by asymmetric budding projections

The Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) is a strictly protected species of large carnivore in Poland. It inhabits forest complexes in north-eastern Poland and the Carpathian region in southern Poland. The status of the lynx within Poland requires special attention because its range decreased between 1980 and 2001 and has not yet recovered. One of the factors negatively affecting lynx populations is diseases, particularly parasites. The helminth fauna of the Eurasian lynx is not fully known in Poland. Previous coprological studies revealed that Polish lynx have been infected with seven species of nematod

Prevalence and risk factors of intestinal and lung parasites were investigated in 239 owned dogs and 81 owned cats from central Italy. In 36 dogs and 20 cats found infected by nematodes, pre and post-treatment faecal egg count (FEC) was also evaluated. About 31% of dogs and about 35% of cats resulted positive for at least one intestinal or lung parasitic species. Helminthic, intestinal and zoonotic infections resulted prevalent in examined animals. Examined dogs resulted infected by Toxocara canis (13.0%), Toxascaris leonina (1.7%), Trichuris vulpis (3.3%), Ancylostoma caninum (2.0%), Uncinari

The symptomatic phase of neurocysticercosis (NCC), a parasitic disease of the central nervous system (CNS) in humans, is characterized by inflammatory responses leading to neuropathology and, in some cases, death. In an animal model of NCC in which mice were intracranially inoculated with the parasite Mesocestoides corti, the infection in mice lacking the myeloid differentiation primary response gene 88 (MyD88(-/-)) resulted in decreased disease severity and improved survival compared with that in wild-type (WT) mice. The CNS of MyD88(-/-) mice was more quiescent, with decreased microgliosis a

The blood brain barrier (BBB) and the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCB) limit the influx of immune mediators and bloodstream compounds into the central nervous system (CNS). Upon injury or infection, the integrity of these barriers is compromised and leukocyte infiltration occurs. The BCB is located in the choroid plexuses (CPs) found within ventricles of the brain, and it is considered one of the main routes of cellular infiltration into the CNS into healthy individuals. Our group recently showed that in a murine model of neurocysticercosis (NCC), there is a moderate increase in infiltr
