Metallic nanoparticles in diabetes mellitus: Mechanistic insights and therapeutic perspectives.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that affects millions worldwide and continues to rise in prevalence. While conventional therapies such as insulin and oral hypoglycemic drugs provide glycemic control, they often fail to address underlying mechanisms like oxidative stress, inflammation, and β-cell dysfunction that drive disease progression. Metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) have emerged as promising multifunctional agents owing to their tunable physicochemical properties, high surface reactivity, and ability to be functionalized for targeted applications. Recent studies demonstrate

Elementary Steps of Catalytic Reactions Occurring on Metallic Alloy Nanoparticles.

Catalytic reactions running in an adsorbed overlayer on metallic alloy nanoparticles are of high interest in the context of applications in the chemical industry. The understanding of the corresponding kinetics is, however, still limited. One of the reasons of this state of the art is the interplay between adsorption and adsorbate-influenced segregation of metal atoms inside alloy nanoparticles. I scrutinize this interplay by using a generic field model of segregation and the mean-field approximation in order to describe adsorption, desorption, and elementary catalytic reactions. Under steady-

The Impact of Metal Nanoparticles on Female Reproductive System: Risks and Opportunities.

Humans have always been exposed to tiny particles via dust storms, volcanic ash, and other natural processes, and our bodily systems are well adapted to protect us from these potentially harmful external agents. However, technological advancement has dramatically increased the production of nanometer-sized particles or nanoparticles (NPs), and many epidemiological studies have confirmed a correlation between NP exposure and the onset of cardiovascular diseases and various cancers. Among the adverse effects on human health, in recent years, potential hazards of nanomaterials on female reproduct

Metal oxide nanoparticles for the decontamination of toxic chemical and biological compounds.

For several years, the international context is deeply affected by the use of chemical and biological weapons. The use of CBRN (Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear) threat agents from military stockpiles or biological civilian industry demonstrate the critical need to improve capabilities of decontamination for civilians and military. Physical decontamination systems that operate only by adsorption and displacement such as Fuller's Earth, have the drawback of not neutralizing hazardous agents, giving place to cross contaminations. Consequently, the development of a formulation based on me

Characterization and properties of metallic iron nanoparticles: spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and kinetics.

There are reports that nano-sized zero-valent iron (Fe0) exhibits greater reactivity than micro-sized particles of Fe0, and it has been suggested that the higher reactivity of nano-Fe0 may impart advantages for groundwater remediation or other environmental applications. However, most of these reports are preliminary in that they leave a hostof potentiallysignificant(and often challenging) material or process variables either uncontrolled or unresolved. In an effort to better understand the reactivity of nano-Fe0, we have used a variety of complementary techniques to characterize two widely st

Top-down fabrication of porous metal silicate nanoparticles from chemobrionic chemical gardens.

Porous inorganic nanoparticles are pivotal across the chemical, biomedical, and energy sectors. However, conventional synthesis methods typically rely on expensive organic templates and energy-intensive, high-temperature calcination steps. Although chemobrionic systems offer a sustainable route toward self-assembled architectures, their top-down processing into functional nanomaterials remains largely unexplored. Here, we present a facile and template-free strategy to synthesize functional metal-silicate nanoparticles by disintegrating alkaline-earth, transition, and rare-earth chemical garden

Polymers on Metal Nanoparticles: Emerging Chemistry, Self-Assembly, and Their Biomedical Applications.

Advances in ligand design and nanoscale surface engineering have transformed metal nanoparticles (NPs) into highly programmable platforms with tunable optical, plasmonic, and therapeutic properties. This review provides a perspective on polymer-ligand functionalization, charting how macromolecular-level binding chemistry translates into multiscale structure-property relationships and ultimately governs material function. We first examine strategies for incorporating diverse ligand chemistries, through both covalent and noncovalent interactions, into polymer architectures with controlled multiv

Facile Fabrication of Multifunctional Metal-Phenolic Network Nanoparticles for Bacterial Keratitis Treatment.

The management of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) keratitis remains highly challenging due to escalating antibiotic resistance and the severe, vision-threatening damage driven by uncontrolled inflammation. In this work, EGCG-Zn-VAN nanoparticles (NPs) were engineered as a multifunctional metal-phenolic network (MPN)-based platform to overcome these limitations through three integrated mechanisms: enhanced ocular retention, infection microenvironment-responsive antibiotic release, and synergistic anti-inflammatory activity. The carrier, formed by coordination-driven self-asse

Green Synthesis of Metal Nanoparticles Using Cinnamomum-Based Extracts and Their Applications.

INTRODUCTION: Nanotechnology is the science that deals with matter on the nanoscale, with sizes ranging from 1 to 100 nm. It involves designing, synthesising, characterising and applying these nanoscale materials. Nanoparticles (NPs) are known for their high surface-area to volume-ratio, surface charge density, low melting point, and distinguishably good optical/electrical properties. NPs exhibit an excellent drug delivery system, an effective contrast agent for vascular imaging, and effective antimicrobial activity. The biological synthesis of NPs is a simple, cost-effective, and environmenta

Biochar and metal-tolerant bacteria in alleviating ZnO nanoparticles toxicity in barley.

The constant use of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in agriculture could increase their concentration in soil, and cause a threat to sustainable crop production. The present study was designed to determine the role of spore-forming and metal-tolerant bacteria, and biochar in alleviating the toxic effects of a high dose of ZnO NPs (2000 mg kg-1) spiked to the soil (Haplic Chernozem) on barley (Hordeum sativum L). The mobile compounds of Zn in soil and their accumulation in H. sativum tissues were increased significantly. The addition of biochar (2.5% of total soil) and bacteria (1010 CFU kg-

The potential anti-infective applications of metal oxide nanoparticles: A systematic review.

Microbial infections present a major global healthcare challenge, in large part because of the development of microbial resistance to the currently approved antimicrobial drugs. This demands the development of new antimicrobial agents. Metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) are a class of materials that have been widely explored for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. They are reported to have wide-ranging antimicrobial activities and to be potent against bacteria, viruses, and protozoans. The use of MONPs reduces the possibility of resistance developing because they have multiple mechanisms of ac

Generation of Zerovalent Metal Core Nanoparticles Using n-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminosilanetriol.

In this work, a facile one-pot reaction for the formation of metal nanoparticles in a water solution through the use of n-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminosilanetriol is presented. This compound can be used to effectively reduce and complex metal salts into metal core nanoparticles coated with the compound. By controlling the concentrations of salt and silane one is able to control reaction rates, particle size, and nanoparticle coating. The effects of these changes were characterized through transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis spectrometry (UV-Vis), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy (NM

Facile phase transfer of large, water-soluble metal nanoparticles to nonpolar solvents.

The facile phase-transfer of large, water-soluble metal nanoparticles to nonpolar solvent is reported here. Thiol-terminated polystyrene (PS-SH) is ligand-exchanged onto water-soluble metal nanoparticles in single-phase acetone/water mixtures, generating a precipitate. The solvent is then removed and the particles are redissolved in nonpolar solvent. This approach is demonstrated for nanoparticles of different metal (Au and Ag), size (3 to >100 nm), shape (spheres, rods, and wires, etc.), and leaving ligand (citrate, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, poly(vinylpyrrolidone), and 4-dimethylaminopy

Metal-free and MRI visible theranostic lyotropic liquid crystal nitroxide-based nanoparticles.

The development of improved, low toxicity, clinically viable nanomaterials that provide MRI contrast have tremendous potential to form the basis of translatable theranostic agents. Herein we describe a class of MRI visible materials based on lyotropic liquid crystal nanoparticles loaded with a paramagnetic nitroxide lipid. These readily synthesized nanoparticles achieved enhanced proton-relaxivities on the order of clinically used gadolinium complexes such as Omniscan™ without the use of heavy metal coordination complexes. Their low toxicity, high water solubility and colloidal stability in bu

Accumulation mechanism for metal chalcogenide nanoparticles at Hg0 electrodes: copper sulfide example.

Mercury electrodes preconcentrate metal chalcogenide nanoparticles effectively, enabling their detection at submicromolar concentrations (as Sigma chalcogenide) by adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry. Understanding the unique behavior of nanoparticle analytes during preconcentration is critical for lowering detection limits and for quantification. A multistep mechanism is proposed on the basis of accumulation experiments with polydisperse copper sulfide (CuxS) nanoparticles. Particles first diffuse and adsorb at the Hg0 surface. When both the electrode and particles have negative surface

Study on the preparation of sterile noble metal nanoparticles and hydrotalcite layered nanoparticles by innovative high pressure sterilization method.

We have developed an innovative nanoparticle preparation technique. It utilised a high-pressure steam sterilisation pot as the reaction equipment, simplifying biomedical nanoparticle synthesis and sterilisation processes. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and two types of hydrotalcite-layered nanoparticles (LDHs) were prepared successfully. The nanoparticles had a regular morphology and good dispersion, which is consistent with the characteristics of products prepared using traditional methods. The average particle sizes of AuNPs and AgNPs were 25 and 38 nm. Ultraviolet

Nanoparticle cytotoxicity depends on intracellular solubility: comparison of stabilized copper metal and degradable copper oxide nanoparticles.

Metal nanoparticles have distinctly different chemical and physical properties than currently investigated oxides. Since pure metallic nanoparticles are igniting at air, carbon stabilized copper nanoparticles were used as representative material for this class. Using copper as a representative example, we compare the cytotoxicity of copper metal nanoparticles stabilized by a carbon layer to copper oxide nanoparticles using two different cell lines. Keeping the copper exposure dose constant, the two forms of copper showed a distinctly different response. Whilst copper oxide had already been rep
