Assessment of heavy metals exposure, noise and thermal safety in the ambiance of a vacuum metallurgy separation system for recycling heavy metals from crushed e-wastes.

Vacuum metallurgy separation (VMS) is a technically feasible method to recover Pb, Cd and other heavy metals from crushed e-wastes. To further determine the environmental impacts and safety of this method, heavy metals exposure, noise and thermal safety in the ambiance of a vacuum metallurgy separation system are evaluated in this article. The mass concentrations of total suspended particulate (TSP) and PM10 are 0.1503 and 0.0973 mg m(-3) near the facilities. The concentrations of Pb, Cd and Sn in TSP samples are 0.0104, 0.1283 and 0.0961 μg m(-3), respectively. Health risk assessments show th

The Occurrence of Heavy Metals in Fishers, Pekania pennanti, in Wisconsin.

Although fisher (Pekania pennanti) populations have stabilized due to reintroduction efforts and habitat reconstruction, they face ongoing threats from environmental stressors such as deforestation, climate change, vehicle collisions, and toxicants. This study examines the presence of heavy metals in fishers harvested in Wisconsin from 2005 to 2006, providing a foundational understanding of baseline heavy metal concentrations for future reference. Liver samples were analyzed for levels of Aluminum, Copper, Nickel, Zinc, Arsenic, Cadmium, Iron, Manganese, Cobalt, Mercury, Molybdenum, Lead, Thal

Environmental determinants of neurotoxicity: role of heavy metals in neurological disorders.

Neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders are related disorders lying on a spectrum of neural dysfunction with overlapping molecular and cellular mechanisms. Early-life diseases like autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder are the result of disturbed neurodevelopment, while late-onset diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease are defined by progressive neuronal loss and loss of function. Emerging evidence shows that environmental exposures are important, modifiable factors that affect brain health throughout the lifespan. Factors such a

Bioremediation of Soil Contaminated with Heavy Metals by Using Pseudomonas Genus.

The contamination of soil with toxic heavy metals is considered a significant environmental concerns, with the problem intensifying rapidly due to shifts in industrial practices. Even in trace quantities, heavy metals and metalloids, such as chromium, lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic, are toxic and carcinogenic, representing a significant threat to agricultural production and human health. Additionally, prolonged exposure to these heavy metals can cause adverse health effects in humans and other living organisms. Heavy metals are non-degradable and tend to accumulate in soil, meaning their r

Alternative Biosorbents Based on Grape Pomace: Reducing Heavy Metals and Pesticides.

Heavy metal and pesticide contaminations represent significant environmental and health hazards to humans and animals. Toxic heavy metals such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), and copper (Cu) persist in the environment, bioaccumulating in beverages and food products from both natural and anthropogenic sources. Traditional remediation techniques, such as chemical precipitation and ion exchange, are effective but often costly and challenging to apply at a large scale. In recent years, grape pomace-a winemaking by-product rich in bioactive compounds-has emerged as a promising, low-cost b

Role of Genetically Modified Microorganisms for Effective Elimination of Heavy Metals.

Heavy metals are lethal and hazardous pollutants for the ecosystem owing to their virtues including acute toxicity, prolonged persistence, and bioaccumulation. These contaminants are not only a threat to aquatic/terrestrial biota but also pose serious health issues to humans. Natural and anthropologic processes consistently upsurge heavy metal concentration beyond acceptable limits and mobilization and hence disturb biogeochemical cycles and the food chain, although several conventional strategies including adsorption, chemical precipitation, ion exchange, and membrane separation methods are b

Retinal toxicity of heavy metals and its involvement in retinal pathology.

The objective of the present review is to discuss epidemiological evidence demonstrating the association between toxic metal (Cd, Pb, Hg, As, Sn, Ti, Tl) exposure and retinal pathology, along with the potential underlying molecular mechanisms. Epidemiological studies demonstrate that Cd, and to a lesser extent Pb exposure, are associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), while the existing evidence on the levels of these metals in patients with diabetic retinopathy is scarce. Epidemiological data on the association between other toxic metals and metalloids including mercury (Hg) and

Determination of Some Heavy Metals in European and Polish Coal Samples.

This work presents coal analyses for heavy metal content (Tl, Cu, Zn, Cd, Fe). The tested coal samples came from a Russian deposit in the Kuzbass Basin (Novosibirsk and Kemerovo Oblasts, near Kazakhstan) and from Poland. The concentration of thallium in coal was determined using DPASV-differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry-and other metals were examined with FAAS, i.e., flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The study confirmed the presence of thallium in the tested coal sample. The coal samples from outside the European Union contained four times more thallium (the maximum content of

[Chronic kidney disease in Mexico and its relation with heavy metals].

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a public health problem in Mexico, causing 25% of deaths related to diabetes mellitus (DM) and 28% related to hypertensive heart disease. In 2008 CKD reached the highest incidence of end-stage renal disease in the world. Diabetes mellitus is the main risk factor associated with CKD in Mexican population; however, heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury have been associated to nephropathies. In Mexico there are still high levels of these compounds in occupational and environmental settings; therefore, chronic exposures to these metals persist. In

Heavy Metals, Cardiovascular Disease, and the Unexpected Benefits of Chelation Therapy.

This review summarizes evidence from 2 lines of research previously thought to be unrelated: the unexpectedly positive results of TACT (Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy), and a body of epidemiological data showing that accumulation of biologically active metals, such as lead and cadmium, is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Considering these 2 areas of work together may lead to the identification of new, modifiable risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. We examine the history of chelation up through the report of TACT. We then describe work connecting high

A novel electrochemical method to evaluate the cytotoxicity of heavy metals.

There is an ongoing search to develop techniques for detection of heavy metals which are highly toxic and can cause damaging effects even at very low concentrations. In this present study, we report a label-free electrochemical method based on the direct voltammetric response of human cervical carcinoma (HeLa) cells on a highly sensitive graphene modified electrode. Five heavy metals were tested with the method and the results were validated by the traditional methyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay. The results revealed that the most toxic metal was Cr, followed by Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. A good correlatio

Fate and distribution of heavy metals in wastewater irrigated calcareous soils.

Accumulation of heavy metals in Jordanian soils irrigated with treated wastewater threatens agricultural sustainability. This study was carried out to investigate the environmental fate of Zn, Ni, and Cd in calcareous soils irrigated with treated wastewater and to elucidate the impact of hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) amendment on metal redistribution among soil fractions. Results showed that sorption capacity for Zarqa River (ZR1) soil was higher than Wadi Dhuleil (WD1) soil for all metals. The order of sorption affinity for WD1 was in the decreasing order of Ni > Zn > Cd, consistent with electro

NRF2 Oxidative Stress Induced by Heavy Metals is Cell Type Dependent.

Exposure to metallic environmental toxicants has been demonstrated to induce a variety of oxidative stress responses in mammalian cells. The transcription factor Nrf2 is activated in response to oxidative stress and coordinates the expression of antioxidant gene products. In this study, we describe the development of an Nrf2-specific reporter gene assay that can be used to study the oxidative stress response in multiple cell types. Using five different cell lines, the Nrf2-activating potency of twenty metals was assessed across a range of concentrations. While ten of the metals tested (cadmium

Bioaccumulation of heavy metals by Phragmites australis cultivated in synthesized substrates.

Accumulation of heavy metals from various oxides with adsorbed cadmium by wetland plant Phragmites australis was studied to evaluate the fate of heavy metals in the sediment of constructed wetlands. Hoagland solution was used as nutrition supply, and single metal oxide with adsorbed cadmium was applied as contaminant to study the accumulation characteristics of cadmium and the substrate metals by P. australis. After 45-d treatment, the bioaccumulation degree in root followed the order: Al(OH)3 > Al2O3 > Fe3O4 > MnO2 > FeOOH. Heavy metals absorbed by P. australis were largely immobilized by the

Coupled reduction of chlorinated hydrocarbons and heavy metals by zerovalent silicon.

The feasibility of using zerovalent silicon (Si0) as a novel reductant to remove chlorinated compounds and heavy metals in contaminated sites was investigated. The kinetics and degradation mechanism of carbon tetrachloride (CT) by Si0 were also examined. Results showed that zerovalent silicon could effectively dechlorinate the chlorinated compounds. A nearly complete dechlorination of CT by Si0 was obtained within 14 h. The produced concentrations of chloroform (CF) accounted for 71-88% loss of CT, showing that reductive dechlorination is the major degradation pathway for the degradation of ch

Heavy metals in sandy sediments of the Rías Baixas (NW Spain).

We studied the concentrations of certain heavy metals in the total and labile fractions of sandy sediments from four embayments situated on the northwestern coast of Spain. In order to compensate for the effects of the heterogeneity in texture of the different samples, data were normalized. Organic carbon was the most suitable normalizing factor for copper, lead and zinc in the total fraction and copper in the labile fraction, and iron was the most suitable for the other metals in both fractions. Enrichment of copper, lead and zinc in these sediments may have been caused by sewage contaminatio
