Dual Nd isotopic archives in fossil teeth reveal bottom-current control of rare-earth element enrichment in deep-sea sediments.

The global emergence of deep-sea sediments enriched in rare-earth elements and yttrium (REY) after the Late Eocene cooling coincides spatiotemporally with Antarctic bottom water (AABW) expansion, yet the underlying mechanism remains unresolved. Here, we present in situ elemental and neodymium isotopic analyses of apatites extracted from Oligocene-Miocene sediments along the North Pacific AABW pathway. Results show ∼90% of the REY budget resides in inner dentin of fossil teeth. The dentin and coexisting authigenic fluorapatites display similar εNd values (∼-5) matching North Pacific seawater, w

Multi-elemental fingerprinting of the human brain: distribution of toxic, essential, and rare earth elements across neocortical, limbic, and subcortical regions.

This study investigates the regional accumulation of toxic, essential, and rare earth elements (REEs) in 42 human brain samples across neocortical, limbic, and subcortical regions. Using ICP-MS and multivariate frameworks, we demonstrate that elemental ratios (specifically Fe/Mg and Fe/Zn) provided stronger regional discrimination than absolute concentrations, with PCA explaining 51% versus 34% of variance, effectively capturing the brain's stoichiometric architecture. Mn and Fe exhibited the strongest regional gradients, with median concentrations in subcortical nuclei approximately two-fold

Asymmetric ring opening of meso epoxides with TMSCN catalyzed by (pybox)lanthanide complexes.

The asymmetric ring opening of meso epoxides with TMSCN is catalyzed by (pybox)YbCl3 complexes, yielding the beta-trimethylsilyloxy nitrile ring-opened products with good enantioselectivities (83-92% ee). The reaction exhibits a second-order kinetic dependence on catalyst concentration and a first-order dependence on epoxide concentration, consistent with a bimetallic pathway involving simultaneous activation of epoxide and cyanide.

Rare Earth Elements in Human Blood: Baseline Concentrations and Their Potential Sources.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are increasingly used in modern technologies, raising concerns about their potential release into the environment and the resulting exposure of humans. Despite their widespread use, little is known about baseline REEs levels in the general population. In this study, we measured the concentrations of nine REEs in blood samples collected from healthy volunteers in southern Poland. The samples were analysed using mass spectrometry method. The median observed concentrations were 52.49 ngL− 1, 96.95 ngL− 1, 35.19 ngL− 1, 6.79 ngL− 1, 7.59 ngL− 1, 6.14 ngL− 1, 1.18 ngL− 1,

Environmental exposure to rare earth elements and respiratory health: an emerging public health concern.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are increasingly released into the environment due to intensive mining, industrial processing, and expanding technological applications, resulting in widespread human exposure. Within the respiratory exposome framework, REEs have increasingly been recognized as a potentially important class of airborne contaminants. Fine and ultrafine REE-containing particles can penetrate deeply into the distal lung, where they exhibit high biopersistence and limited clearance. Epidemiological evidence from mining and industrial regions suggests that elevated internal REE burdens ma

Rare-Earth Elements at the Interface of Chemistry and Cancer Therapy.

Rare-earth elements (REEs), which include the entire lanthanide series together with scandium and yttrium, have unique electronic configurations and coordination chemical properties that provide them with special magnetic, optical, and redox abilities. Generally used for diagnostic imaging and theranostic applications, increasing evidence emphasizes their potential as direct anticancer agents. This review aims to present a thorough investigation of the studies published in the last ten years that focus on the intrinsic anticancer properties of REE-based molecular complexes and nanostructures,

Rare Earth Elements in Testicular Function: Current Knowledge and Future Directions.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are increasingly recognized as modulators of male reproductive health. This review presents the first comprehensive and critical analysis of the detrimental and potentially beneficial effects of REEs on male vertebrate reproductive function. In vivo and in vitro studies show that elements, particularly Gadolinium, Lanthanum, and Yttrium, share a toxicological profile characterized by oxidative stress, inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, endocrine disruption, and impairment of the blood-testis barrier. These mechanisms converge on both somatic and germ cell popul

Evaluation and Rehabilitation System for Ulnar-Innervated Muscles Facilitated by Rare Earth Oxide-Enhanced Triboelectric Sensor.

Ulnar nerve injuries often lead to muscle atrophy and reduced hand function, necessitating precise monitoring and effective rehabilitation strategies. Current grip strength measurement tools rely on rigid mechanical equipment, which is inconvenient and requires frequent calibration. To address this, a muscle atrophy evaluation and rehabilitation system (MUERS) is presented, featuring a highly sensitive rare earth oxide-enhanced triboelectric sensor (RETS). Utilizing the unique electrochemical properties of rare earth oxides, RETS demonstrates a linear voltage-force response in the range of 8-8

Facet-Dependent Adsorption of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) and Actinides onto Goethite: REE Pattern Variability and Cerium Anomaly.

Assessing the fate of contaminants in the environment requires a deep understanding of intrinsic adsorption mechanisms on natural minerals such as Fe-oxyhydroxides. In this study, we proposed an innovative approach to probe site heterogeneities on the goethite surface by comparing the adsorption behavior of rare earth elements (REEs, including Sc, Y, and all lanthanides; Ln) except Pm, as well as Th and U. A surface loading-dependent adsorption of Ln and Y was observed, with a shift from (i) preferential middle to heavy REE adsorption and (ii) limited to substantial fractionation between Y and

Environmental risk assessment of the potential "Chemical Time Bomb" of ion-adsorption type rare earth elements in urban areas.

Ion-adsorption type rare earth elements (REEs) located in tropical and subtropical zones have abundant movable and bioavailable ion-exchangeable REEs and could be an environmental hazard. However, our understanding of their environmental risk in urban areas is limited. We aimed to determine whether ion-adsorption type REEs in Guangzhou represent a kind of potential "Chemical Time Bomb" (CTB) and assess the environmental risk. We conducted a comprehensive survey of REEs in 181 samples including regolith (n = 70), surface water (n = 55), sediment (n = 25), vegetables (n = 22) and rhizosphere soi

Anthropogenic gadolinium anomalies and reservoir-driven removal of dissolved rare earth elements in the world's largest hydropower project.

Large reservoirs, such as the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), act as distinct biogeochemical reactors within the global riverine system. However, their dual role as recipients of pollution and modifiers of contaminant fate remains incompletely understood. Dissolved rare earth elements (REEs) in rivers serve as sensitive tracers of continental weathering and anthropogenic perturbations, making them valuable for deciphering such complex processes. This study aims to characterize the spatial distribution of dissolved REEs, quantify anthropogenic inputs versus natural weathering sources, and elucida

Evaluating in vitro bioaccessible fractions of rare earth elements in soils by using a simplified bioaccessibility extraction test.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are emerging contaminants; however, information on their bioaccessibility via soil ingestion and its implications for human health risk remains limited. The physiologically based extraction test (PBET) is commonly used to evaluate the bioaccessibility of potentially toxic elements in soils, but the simplified bioaccessibility extraction test (SBET) offers a streamlined in vitro bioaccessibility assessment. This study examined thirty-two surface soil (0-10 cm) samples from Taiwan for the bioaccessibility of REEs using PBET and SBET. Additionally, the tested soils were

Phosphatase-mediated mitigation of rare earth element toxicity to Pseudomonas putida.

Anthropogenic activities are driving an increasing flux of rare earth elements (REE) into environmental compartments, raising concerns about their biological impact, particularly on microorganisms that sustain ecosystem functioning. Here, we provide a systematic assessment of the toxicity of all 16 REE toward Pseudomonas putida KT2440, a soil bacterium that can use these metals as enzyme cofactors. Dose-response growth inhibition assays revealed high sensitivity to light REE. Toxicity correlated strongly with ionic radius, with IC50 values ranging from 0.3 µM for lanthanum to 10 µM for scandiu

1H-NMR studies on the ternary complexes of rare-earth ions with thenoyltrifluoroacetone and polyethers in dichloromethane.

The structures of the ternary complexes of lanthanoid and yttrium (Ln3+)-thenoyltrifluoroacetonates (tta-) with polyether (POE) in organic phase were investigated by 1H-NMR spectroscopy, where the POEs are crown ethers (18-crown-6 and benzo-18-crown-6) and monodispersed linear polyethers (DEOn: HO-(CH2CH2O-)nC12H25, where n=4, 6, 8). The changes in chemical shift of methylene protons of POE by addition of the adduct complex [Ln(tta)3(POE)] were measured at various Ln3+-to-POE concentration ratios. Chemical shift changes for each proton of POE by the formation of [Ln(tta)3(POE)] were determined

Microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvent leaching for efficient and selective extraction of rare earth elements from coal fly ash.

Rare earth elements are strategic and critical materials for addressing the global energy crisis and advancing sustainable development goals. Coal fly ash, a major byproduct of coal-fired power plants, has emerged as a promising secondary source of REEs. However, conventional extraction methods suffer from low efficiency, high acid consumption, and significant environmental concerns. This study developed a microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvents leaching process for efficient and selective REE recovery from coal fly ash. Three DESs were synthesized using choline chloride as the hydrogen bond
