A Tale of Two States: Similarities and Differences in Neuropeptide Signaling in Larval and Adult Drosophila.

Having the life cycle divided into a larval and an adult stage, each dwelling in a separate habitat, is advantageous since it prevents competition for resources and separates development and reproduction into different stages. In holometabolous insects, larval life is characterized by intense feeding, growth, and molting, whereas the adults constitute the reproductive and highly mobile stage. This review discusses how this switch in lifestyle is reflected in the neuroendocrine system and peptidergic signaling. Neuropeptides and peptide hormones (collectively NPHs) are important regulators of m

The impact of metamorphosis and size on the aquatic feeding kinematics of the Iberian ribbed newt (Pleurodeles waltl Michahelles, 1830).

Metamorphosis involves abrupt morphological changes separating larval and adult stages. The adaptive decoupling hypothesis proposes that metamorphosis breaks the correlations among the phenotypes expressed at the different life stages, enabling their independent evolution. This should be reflected in differences in functional performance linked to the body parts remodelled during metamorphosis. Moreover, changes in body size throughout ontogeny can also influence functional performance. We investigated the influence of metamorphosis and size on suction feeding kinematics in larvae and metamorp

Influence of Amphibian Metamorphosis on the Biokinetics and Biodistribution of Radionuclides Cesium and Strontium.

Amphibians currently face a global decline due to numerous stressors, including contaminated ecosystems. Radionuclides, while less prevalent than other anthropogenic contaminants, can pose a threat to aquatic environments due to their long physical half-lives and tendency to accumulate in organisms. This study investigated the accumulation, depuration, and biodistribution of 134Cs and 85Sr in amphibians through metamorphosis. Limnodynastes peronii tadpoles were exposed to dissolved 134Cs and 85Sr for 6 days and then depurated in clean water for up to 12 days. Whole-body Cs and Sr burdens were

Amphibian studies to investigate the endocrine-disrupting properties of chemicals through the thyroid modality: a comparison of their statistical power.

Amphibians are the current model species for investigating the endocrine-disrupting (ED) properties through the thyroid modality in non-mammalian species. A recurrent question in the European Union (EU) regulatory endocrine assessment of pesticide active substances (2018/605) is whether the positive results from an in vivo screening test, that is, Amphibian Metamorphosis Assay (AMA), can be considered sufficient to conclude on the ED properties of a pesticide active substance or whether the larval amphibian growth and developmental assay (LAGDA) is a necessary step to further clarify the conce

Chronic toxic effects of chloroxylenol exposure on Rana chensinensis: Insights from endochondral ossfication.

Chloroxylenol (para‑chloro-meta-xylenol, PCMX), is a widely used antimicrobial agent and can remain in the aquatic environment. Although toxicity studies related to PCMX on the aquatic animals like zebrafish and Brachionus koreanus have been reported, there are few reports in the ecological risk of amphibians. In this study, the toxicity of different concentration (143, 14.3, 1.43 μg/L) of PCMX treatments on the endochondral ossification and body condition of Rana chensiensis tadpoles was investigated at environmentally relevant concentrations during metamorphosis. The chronic exposure of PCMX

Cadmium bioaccumulation dynamics during amphibian development and metamorphosis.

Cadmium pollution poses a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems due to its propensity to bioaccumulate and cause toxicity. This study assessed the complex dynamics of cadmium uptake, accumulation and distribution across anuran development to provide new insights into the fate of cadmium burdens during metamorphosis and compare the susceptibility of different life stages to cadmium accumulation. Tadpoles of various developmental stages were exposed to dissolved 109-cadmium and depurated in clean water in a series of experiments. Temporal changes in whole-body and tissue concentrations were a

Differences in responsiveness and sensitivity to exogenous disruptors of the thyroid gland in three anuran species.

Anuran larval development comprises tissues/organs/systems that are: exclusively of larvae, able to be remodelled, and those of postmetamorphic stages. Also, the anuran larval development is characterized by inter-related parameters: time, size and shape forming part of growth and differentiation. The anuran metamorphosis starts when growth and differentiation achieve a threshold that differs among species since it is regulated by a number of external (environmental) and internal (hormonal) processes. Here we explore the consequences of exogenous disruptors on the thyroid gland (e.g., methimaz

Glycoconjugate expression in the olfactory bulb of the premetamorphic larva of the Japanese sword-tailed newt (Cynops ensicauda).

We examined the organization of the olfactory organ and assessed the lectin histochemistry to investigate the glycoconjugate distribution of the olfactory bulb in premetamorphic larvae of Cynops ensicauda. The nasal cavity was an oval chamber that contained olfactory epithelium and a primitive vomeronasal organ. Secretory products were found in the supporting cells of the two sensory epithelia and in the respiratory cells. Ten lectins bound to the olfactory and vomeronasal nerve fibers as well as to the glomeruli in the olfactory bulb. The binding intensity in larvae was weaker than that repor

Better than fish on land? Hearing across metamorphosis in salamanders.

Early tetrapods faced an auditory challenge from the impedance mismatch between air and tissue in the transition from aquatic to terrestrial lifestyles during the Early Carboniferous (350 Ma). Consequently, tetrapods may have been deaf to airborne sounds for up to 100 Myr until tympanic middle ears evolved during the Triassic. The middle ear morphology of recent urodeles is similar to that of early 'lepospondyl' microsaur tetrapods, and experimental studies on their hearing capabilities are therefore useful to understand the evolutionary and functional drivers behind the shift from aquatic to

Ontogeny of the vertebral column of Eleutherodactylus johnstonei (Anura: Eleutherodactylidae) reveals heterochronies relative to metamorphic frogs.

Over the last century, the morphogenesis of the vertebral column has been considered as a highly conserved process among anurans. This statement is based on the study of few metamorphic taxa, ignoring the role of developmental mechanisms underlying the evolution of specialized life-histories. Direct development in anurans has been regarded as evolutionarily derived and involves developmental recapitulation and repatterning at different levels in all amphibian taxa studied so far. Herein, we analyze the vertebral column morphogenesis of the direct-developing frog Eleutherodactylus johnstonei, d

Development of the olfactory and vomeronasal organs in Discoglossus pictus (Discoglossidae, Anura).

Using histological techniques and computer-aided three-dimensional reconstructions of histological serial sections, we studied the development of the olfactory and vomeronasal organs in the discoglossid frog Discoglossus pictus. The olfactory epithelium in larval D. pictus represents one continuous unit of tissue not divided into two separate portions. However, a small pouch of olfactory epithelium (the "ventromedial diverticulum") is embedded into the roof of the buccal cavity, anteromedial to the internal naris. The lateral appendix is present in D. pictus through the entire larval period an

Growth and development of Gnathostoma spinigerum (Nematoda: Gnathostomatidae) larvae in Mesocyclops aspericornis (Cyclopoida: Cyclopidae).

BACKGROUND: Gnathostoma spinigerum larva is pathogenic, causing gnathostomiasis in humans and certain animals, and is prevalent mainly in Asia. Growth and development of Gnathostoma spinigerum larvae in the cyclopoid copepod Mesocyclops aspericornis, the first intermediate host, were examined. RESULTS: When newly hatched, ensheathed second-stage larvae (L2) were ingested by M. aspericornis, they immediately appeared exsheathed in the stomach of M. aspericornis. They then penetrated the stomach wall and entered the body cavity, where they immediately metamorphosed to a stunted form with the bo

Proliferating cells in suborbital tissue drive eye migration in flatfish.

The left/right asymmetry of adult flatfishes (Pleuronectiformes) is remarkable given the external body symmetry of the larval fish. The best-known change is the migration of their eyes: one eye migrates from one side to the other. Two extinct primitive pleuronectiformes with incomplete orbital migration have again attracted public attention to the mechanism of eye migration, a subject of speculation and research for over a century. Cranial asymmetry is currently believed to be responsible for eye migration. Contrary to that hypothesis, we show here that the initial migration of the eye is caus

Hemps, a novel EGF-like protein, plays a central role in ascidian metamorphosis.

All chordates share several characteristic features including a dorsal hollow neural tube, a notochord, a pharynx and an endostyle. Unlike other chordate taxa, ascidians have a biphasic life-history with two distinct body plans. During metamorphosis, the larval nerve cord and notochord degenerate and the pharyngeal gill slits and endostyle form. While ascidians, like other marine invertebrates, metamorphose in response to specific environmental cues, it remains unclear how these cues trigger metamorphosis. We have identified a novel gene (Hemps) which encodes a protein with a putative secretio

Insulin, glucagon and somatostatin localization in the pancreas of metamorphosed Xenopus laevis.

The current study was designed to determine if insulin, glucagon and somatostatin-containing cells are present in the pancreas of adult Xenopus laevis. Localization methods utilized included cytochemical aldehyde fuchsin (AF) staining as well as the immunochemical peroxidase antiperoxidase (PAP) procedure for light microscopy. The results show numerous large clusters of AF-positive cells within a network of highly vascularized acinar tissue. PAP immunochemical localization with insulin antibody on adjacent sections demonstrates positive immunoreactivity to AF-positive cell groups and also the

Differentiation of the segmented tubular nephron and excretory duct during lamprey metamorphosis.

The tubular portion of the adult lamprey nephron differentiates into various morphologically distinct segments during the seven stages of metamorphosis. At stage 1, a rudimentary nephron unit (RNU) originates from a nephrogenic mass attached to the peritoneum and elongates to become associated at its distal end with the archinephric (excretory) duct. The rapidly dividing cells show little sign of differentiation. Separation of the RNU from the peritoneum in stage 2 is first accompanied by widening of lateral intercellular spaces and then eventually by the formation of a small lumen at the prox

miRNAs of Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus 1762) conserved in six orders of the class Insecta.

Aedes aegypti L. is the most important vector of arboviruses such as dengue, Zika, chikungunya, Mayaro, and yellow fever, which impact millions of people's health per year. MicroRNA profile has been described in some mosquito species as being important for biological processes such as digestion of blood, oviposition, sexual differentiation, insecticide resistance, and pathogens dissemination. We identified the miRNAs of Ae. aegypti females, males and eggs of a reference insecticide susceptible strain New Orleans and compared them with those other insects to determine miRNA fingerprint by new-g

Transformation of the pectoral girdle in the evolutionary origin of frogs: insights from the primitive anuran Discoglossus.

Using cleared-and-stained whole mounts and computer-aided three-dimensional reconstructions made from serial histological sections, we studied the development of the pectoral girdle in Discoglossus pictus, an extant member of an ancient frog lineage, represented for example by Eodiscoglossus from the Middle Jurassic to Early Cretaceous periods in Europe. Basic developmental features were compared with those of extinct Temnospondyli, considered to be the most probable anuran ancestors, and with Triadobatrachus, an early Triassic proanuran. In the endochondral girdle, the separate scapula and co
