"A Fire in the Blood": metaphors of bipolar disorder in Jamison's An Unquiet Mind.

Content analysis of three chapters of Jamison's memoir, An Unquiet Mind, shows that depression, mania, and Bipolar Disorder have a common metaphoric core as a sequential process of suffering and adversity that is a form of malevolence and destruction. Depression was down and in, while mania was up, in and distant, circular and zigzag, a powerful force of quickness and motion, fieriness, strangeness, seduction, expansive extravagance, and acuity. Bipolar Disorder is down and away and a sequential and cyclical process that partakes of the metaphors of its component moods. We conclude that metaph

[Metaphorical aspects of mistletoe therapy in patients' experiences--a qualitative study].

OBJECTIVE: Mistletoe therapy is an item of research because of its immunological features. Nevertheless, mistletoe should be also an item of research because of its semiotics. Long before R. Steiner proposed mistletoe as an anticancer drug, this plant seemed to have its meaning not by pharmacodynamics but by pharmacosemiotics and magic. Thus, metaphorical aspects of mistletoe therapy should be described by processing the transcript and paintings from a therapeutic group session of cancer patients. Especially the relation between individually and historically coded metaphors should be looked at

The developmental importance of motion information in perceiving and describing metaphoric similarity.

The perceptual basis of metaphor was investigated using films of natural objects and events. The subjects were 5-, 7-, and 10-year-old children and adults, 16 at each age. The stimuli were 10 triads of films, for example, a ballerina spinning, a top spinning, and a ballerina leaping. There were 3 possible pairs of scenes: the metaphoric (e.g., ballerina spinning, top spinning), the literal (e.g., ballerina spinning, ballerina leaping), and the control (e.g., ballerina leaping, top spinning). Half the triads were stationary objects, the other half moving objects (i.e., events). Subjects were as

A Visual Metaphor for Oral Health Education in Hemodialysis Patients: A Pilot Study.

AIMS: The aim of this study was the comparison of PRISM (Pictorial Representation of Illness and Self-Measure) with an interview-based oral health education during a 4-week follow-up. METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients under chronic hemodialysis (HD) were recruited and randomly assigned either to PRISM or a control group. At baseline, after the first intervention (T1), after 2 weeks (second intervention, T2) and after 4 weeks (third intervention, T3), three parameters were evaluated: gingival inflammation by papilla bleeding index (PBI), patient perspective (specific questionnaire), Oral health im

From Metaphor to Computation: Constructing the Potential Landscape for Multivariate Psychological Formal Models.

For psychological formal models, the stability of different phases is an important property for understanding individual differences and change processes. Many researchers use landscapes as a metaphor to illustrate the concept of stability, but so far there is no method to quantify the stability of a system's phases. We here propose a method to construct the potential landscape for multivariate psychological models. This method is based on the generalized potential function defined by Wang et al. (2008) and Monte Carlo simulation. Based on potential landscapes we define three different types o

Sheltered employment in schizophrenia is related to disorganization symptoms, processing speed and metaphor comprehension.

OBJECTIVES: The significance of cognitive functioning deficits in schizophrenia is already well acknowledged. The relationships among lower and higher order cognitive skills and symptoms, as well as their relevance to holding a paid job are relatively less researched, though. The purpose of this study was to conduct an analysis concerning these issues. METHODS: This study included 62 individuals with schizophrenia, 33 of them employed in paid sheltered jobs and 29 attending occupational therapy. They were assessed with tests of cognitive functions including communication skills. Psychopatholo

The Tea-Steeping Metaphor: Origin, Application, Advantages, Disadvantages, and Impact on Forensic Medicine Teaching.

Modern medical education increasingly emphasizes deep learning, professional identity formation (PIF), and longitudinal competency development. The tea-steeping metaphor, drawn from the gradual infusion process of tea leaves into water, offers a novel lens to conceptualize immersive and time-dependent learning. This metaphor holds particular relevance in forensic medicine, where learners must develop a nuanced understanding of medico-legal principles, ethical reasoning, and procedural competence over time. Objective of this article is to explore the origin, educational applications, benefits,

Perceptions of Alzheimer's Disease Among Cognitively Healthy, Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Metaphor Study.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease prevalence has risen. Although public perceptions of AD may influence attitudes toward cognitive decline and help-seeking behaviours, little is known about how cognitively healthy older adults conceptualise the disease. This study explored older adults' metaphorical perceptions of Alzheimer's disease. METHODS: This qualitative study employed a phenomenological design using metaphor analysis. Participants were 196 cognitively healthy, community-dwelling older adults. Data were collected using a researcher-developed questionnaire including sociodemographic questi

Lantern on Dome of St. Paul's Cathedral - An Apt Metaphor for a Challenging Leiomyoma.

Fibroids are ubiquitous in women of the reproductive age group more so in midlife. The cervical fibroids are challenging to operating surgeons because it distorts the surgical anatomy of the pelvis and urogenital system. The metaphor given historically to this condition is apt as the uterus appears like a lantern sitting on the dome of cervical fibroid similar to the dome of the cathedral. Here, we report two cases of cervical fibroid in perimenopausal age group of different sizes managed by following specific steps.

Music in the Park. An integrating metaphor for the emerging primary (health) care system.

BACKGROUND: Metaphors are central to the human understanding of complex issues; through the immediate associations they evoke and frame problems and suggest solutions. Our suggestion of Music in the Park as a metaphor for health systems reform brings to the forefront the environmentally diverse but bounded spaces of health services that offer a variety of attractors within their confines, while pushing into the background organizational and economic concerns. REFLECTIONS: Parks, like health services, are embedded in their local landscape, serving their communities, but most importantly parks

Recognition of metaphor and irony in young adults: the impact of schizotypal personality traits.

Patients with schizophrenia demonstrate two dissociable impairments of pragmatic language comprehension: (1) an insensitivity to irony, which is associated with poor theory-of-mind (i.e. a difficulty with inferring other people's thoughts); and (2) poor recognition of metaphors, which may reflect degraded semantics. This study investigated whether non-clinical high-schizotypal adults show similar impairments of pragmatic language. Thirty-six university students completed the Raine Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire, the Wechsler Memory Scale Logical-Memories subtest, Raven's Progressive Mat

The Cartesian clock metaphor for pineal gland operation pervades the origin of modern chronobiology.

In theoretical descriptions formulated during the 1600s, R. Descartes attributed a clock-like role to the pineal gland. He established the belief that pineal function underlies the laws of the universe that determine the cyclic sleep-awake states in man. Recent reports about pineal circadian pacemakers now validate the brilliant accuracy of Cartesian thought, in relation to the relevant role of the pineal gland.

'WTF Uterus?' Metaphors of the Body as Positioning in Infertility Blogs by Muslim Women.

This paper uses a small-stories positioning framework to analyse metaphors of the body and related claims of identity in Muslim women's infertility blogs. I first conduct a directed qualitative content analysis to identify metaphorically used words and group them into a small set of metaphor families; I then apply Metaphor-Led Positioning Analysis to interpret how those metaphors position narrators, audiences, and institutions across small stories. I examine how narrators construct gendered selves in context - alternately contesting or adopting positions of victimhood - vis-à-vis hegemonic med

From living metaphors in impactful dreams to sublime disquietude and sublime enthrallment.

INTRODUCTION: The continuing impact of spontaneously recalled dreams sometimes depends upon the same kind of unfolding semantic complexity that literary scholars attribute to poetic literary metaphors. METHODS: We present the results of two online studies of impactful dreams (i.e., nightmares, existential dreams, and transcendent dreams) that reinforce this account. RESULTS: In both Study 1 (N = 147) and Study 2 (N = 157), assessment of dream experience indicated that (a) existential dreams transition into sublime disquietude (inexpressible realizations, self-perceptual depth, disquietude) a

Metaphorical Peace: Translating the Women Peace and Security Agenda in the Arab World.

Since the end of the Cold War the international peace architecture has grown exponentially. A progressively more detailed and conceptually broad understanding of peace has emerged to underpin peacemaking by the UN and other international actors. This definition has been developed through a series of resolutions and reports that articulate a specific understanding of 'peace' in which 'sustaining peace' requires the prevention of conflict and addressing its root causes. This paper argues that the expansion of this field has led to the situation where the concept of 'peace' has become so conceptu

Cancer experience in metaphors: patients, carers, professionals, students - a scoping review.

The use of metaphors to talk about cancer experiences has attracted much research and debate, especially in the case of military metaphors. However, questions remain about what metaphors are used by different populations for different aspects of the cancer experience. This scoping review aims to answer them.We searched PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Scopus and Web of Science databases. Eligible sources include peer-reviewed scientific research published in English between 2013 and 2023, investigating patterns of metaphor use from adult populations (age ≥18) for cancer-related topics, such as cancer

Do Metaphors in Health Messages Work? Exploring Emotional and Cognitive Factors.

Health communicators publicize messages that use metaphors to compare abstract health-related concepts to concrete concepts in other domains. Such messages aim to change health attitudes and behavior, but do they work? According to Conceptual Metaphor Theory, metaphors can shape thought by transferring personalized knowledge of a concrete concept to understand and relate to an abstraction, despite their superficial differences. The authors extend this claim to specify emotional and cognitive factors potentially moderating the productivity (and counter-productivity) of metaphoric health message

Original research: an inpatient program for adolescents with anorexia experienced as a metaphoric prison.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of adolescents within an inpatient behavioral program for the treatment of anorexia nervosa, as well as those of the nurses who cared for them. In particular, the study focused on the effects of the program's behavior modification principles on the relationship between patient and nurse. METHODS: Using a qualitative, naturalistic design, the investigator (LMR) conducted in-depth, face-to-face, semistructured interviews with adolescent patients being treated for anorexia in an acute care setting and the pediatric nurses workin

Metaphoric language and the articulation of emotions by people affected by motor neurone disease.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the use of metaphoric language to convey emotion in interviews with people affected by motor neurone disease, a progressive neurological condition that sits between chronic and terminal illness. METHODS: Secondary analysis of 46 interviews with people affected by motor neurone disease in the United Kingdom (35 individuals with the condition, 11 carers). RESULTS: Metaphor and figurative language was used to communicate the intensely emotional experiences of being diagnosed with and living with motor neurone disease.
