Water-promoted selective photocatalytic methane oxidation for methanol production.

Converting relatively inert methane into active chemical fuels such as methanol with high selectivity through an energy-saving strategy has remained a grand challenge. Photocatalytic technology consuming solar energy is an appealing alternative for methane reforming. However, the low efficiency and the undesirable formation of low-value products, such as carbon dioxide and ethane, limit the commercial application of photocatalytic technology. Herein, we find a facile and practical water-promoted pathway for photocatalytic methane reforming into methanol, enabling methanol production from metha

Palladium Catalysts for Methane Oxidation: Old Materials, New Challenges.

ConspectusMethane complete oxidation is an important reaction that is part of the general scheme used for removing pollutants contained in emissions from internal combustion engines and, more generally, combustion processes. It has also recently attracted interest as an option for the removal of atmospheric methane in the context of negative emission technologies. Methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, can be converted to carbon dioxide and water via its complete oxidation. Despite burning methane being facile because the combustion sustains its complete oxidation after ignition, methane strong C

Methane production by phosphate-starved SAR11 chemoheterotrophic marine bacteria.

The oxygenated surface waters of the world's oceans are supersaturated with methane relative to the atmosphere, a phenomenon termed the 'marine methane paradox'. The production of methylphosphonic acid (MPn) by marine archaea related to Nitrosopumilus maritimus and subsequent decomposition of MPn by phosphate-starved bacterioplankton may partially explain the excess methane in surface waters. Here we show that Pelagibacterales sp. strain HTCC7211, an isolate of the SAR11 clade of marine α-proteobacteria, produces methane from MPn, stoichiometric to phosphorus consumption, when starved for phos

Carbohydrate challenge tests: do you need to measure methane?

OBJECTIVE: Breath tests that measure hydrogen (H2) have been judged reliable for the detection of lactose maldigestion (LM) and fructose malabsorption (FM). Recently, methane (CH4) testing has been advocated and measurement of CH4 in addition to H2 has been shown to increase the diagnostic accuracy for LM. PURPOSE: This study was designed to consider the additional yield from CH4 measurement in patients tested for LM and FM. METHODS: Patients reported for testing after an overnight fast, not smoking and with their prior evening meal carbohydrate restricted. After challenge with 50 g lactose

Formate dehydrogenase from the methane oxidizer Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b.

Formate dehydrogenase (NAD+ dependent) was isolated from the obligate methanotroph Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b. When the enzyme was isolated anaerobically, two forms of the enzyme were seen on native polyacrylamide gels, DE-52 cellulose and Sephacryl S-300 columns; they were approximately 315,000 and 155,000 daltons. The enzyme showed two subunits on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels. The Mr of the alpha-subunit was 53,800 +/- 2,800, and that of the beta-subunit was 102,600 +/- 3,900. The enzyme (Mr 315,000) was composed of these subunits in an apparent alpha 2 beta 2 arrangement.

Does the methane-mitigating feed additive 3-nitrooxypropanol affect additive genetic variance and ranking of methane and yield traits in Holstein dairy cows?

This study aimed to quantify the effect of the methane-mitigating feed additive 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP) on genetic parameters and potential genotype by environment (G × E) interaction for gas emission traits, that is, methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) breath concentrations, as well as milk production traits in Danish Holstein cows. Weekly gas emission phenotypes on individual cow level, recorded with sniffers, and monthly test-day records from 2,404 cows in 5 commercial herds were analyzed using a reaction norm model in which additive genetic and permanent environmental effects were mo

Effects of methane inhibitors on ruminal fermentation and microbial composition in vitro using inoculum from phenotypically high- and low-enteric-methane-emitting cows.

The objective of this study was to investigate the interaction of ruminal inoculum type (obtained from high- or low-CH4-emitting-phenotype cows) and potent antimethanogenic compounds (AMC), including bromoform (CHBr3), 3-nitropropionic acid (3NPA), chloroform, and Rhodophyta macroalga (RM) on in vitro gas production, ruminal fermentation, and microbial composition parameters. Sixty-eight mid-lactation Holstein cows were initially screened for their enteric CH4 emissions. Out of these 68 cows, 2 were designated as high- (HM, 24.8 ± 0.05 g CH4/kg of DMI) and 2 as low- (LM, 14.8 ± 0.45 g CH4/kg o

Mitigation of greenhouse gases in dairy cattle via genetic selection: 1. Genetic parameters of direct methane using noninvasive methods and proxies of methane.

Records of methane emissions from 1,501 cows on 14 commercial farms in 4 regions of Spain were collected from May 2018 to June 2019. Methane concentrations (MeC) were measured using a nondispersive infrared methane detector installed within the feed bin of the automatic milking system during 14- to 21-d periods. Rumination time (RT; min/d) was collected using collars with a tag that registered time (minutes) spent eating and ruminating. The means of MeC and methane production (MeP) were 1,254.28 ppm and 182.49 g/d, respectively; mean RT was 473.38 min/d. Variance components for MeC, MeP, and R

A Revised Kinetic Model for the Catalytic Partial Oxidation of Methane.

The reaction scheme of the partial oxidation of methane is still currently undetermined for many catalysts due to a lack of accurate experimental data to develop kinetic studies. In this work, a kinetic modeling study of partial oxidation of methane was performed using experimental data from the literature. A kinetic model is proposed, and a new set of kinetic parameters was obtained in view of the failed reproduction of a model from the literature. The kinetic parameters of the proposed model were calculated and determined by using an optimization approach based on non-lineal parameter estima

Methane conversion into methanol by biotechnological processes: Challenges and perspectives.

Methane is one of the most prominent greenhouse gases contributing to global warming. It is also a valuable source of energy and a raw material for the production of chemicals. Gas-to-liquid technologies for its conversion into methanol are particularly interesting, methanol being considered as a platform molecule for the chemical industry and a prospective fuel for low-emission transport. Methane oxidation into methanol is up to day carried out industrially under energy-consuming conditions, associated to significant CO2 emissions. Methanotrophic catalysis has arisen as a promising greener al

Response of methane oxidation biosystems to controlled ingress of oxygen.

Methane (CH4) emissions from landfills significantly contribute to global warming, requiring effective mitigation strategies. Methane oxidation biosystems (MOB) use methanotrophic bacteria to convert CH4 into carbon dioxide (CO2), offering a cost-effective and sustainable solution. Optimizing MOB performance depends, among other parameters, on adequate oxygen (O2) supply. This study examines the impact of the O2/CH4 ratio on methane oxidation efficiency using a compost-wood chip mixture as the oxidation medium. Six experimental conditions were tested, maintaining an empty bed residence time (E

Diversity and distribution of the lanthanome in aerobic methane-oxidising bacteria.

BACKGROUND: Lanthanides (Ln) play important and often regulatory roles in the metabolism of methylotrophs, including methanotrophs, particularly through their involvement in methanol oxidation. However, the diversity, distribution, and ecological relevance of Ln-associated proteins (the lanthanome) in aerobic methane-oxidising bacteria (MOB) remain underexplored. This study investigates the lanthanome using genome, plasmid, and proteome data, alongside metatranscriptome data from methane-rich lake sediments. RESULTS: We surveyed 179 genomes spanning Proteobacterial, Verrucomicrobial, and Acti

Direct conversion of methane to formaldehyde and CO on B2O3 catalysts.

Direct oxidation of methane to value-added C1 chemicals (e.g. HCHO and CO) provides a promising way to utilize natural gas sources under relatively mild conditions. Such conversions remain, however, a key selectivity challenge, resulting from the facile formation of undesired fully-oxidized CO2. Here we show that B2O3-based catalysts are selective in the direct conversion of methane to HCHO and CO (~94% selectivity with a HCHO/CO ratio of ~1 at 6% conversion) and highly stable (over 100 hour time-on-stream operation) conducted in a fixed-bed reactor (550 °C, 100 kPa, space velocity 4650 mL gca

Ambiguity in the causes for decadal trends in atmospheric methane and hydroxyl.

Methane is the second strongest anthropogenic greenhouse gas and its atmospheric burden has more than doubled since 1850. Methane concentrations stabilized in the early 2000s and began increasing again in 2007. Neither the stabilization nor the recent growth are well understood, as evidenced by multiple competing hypotheses in recent literature. Here we use a multispecies two-box model inversion to jointly constrain 36 y of methane sources and sinks, using ground-based measurements of methane, methyl chloroform, and the C13/C12 ratio in atmospheric methane (δ13CH4) from 1983 through 2015. Freshwater bacteria release methane as a byproduct of phosphorus acquisition.

UNLABELLED: Freshwater lakes emit large amounts of methane, some of which is produced in oxic surface waters. Two potential pathways for aerobic methane production exist: methanogenesis in oxygenated water, which has been observed in some lakes, or demethylation of small organic molecules. Although methane is produced via demethylation in oxic marine environments, this mechanism of methane release has not yet been demonstrated in freshwater systems. Genes related to the C-P lyase pathway, which cleaves C-P bonds in phosphonate compounds, were found in a metagenomic survey of the surface water

No papers have been published in pediatrics concerning these gases production and exhalation. Understanding of the pattern of H2, CH4, carbon dioxide (CO2), butyrates, indolellipsis, etc., production and exhalation, which may differ in gastrointestinal diseases, may be helpful as far as the diagnosis and treatment of some gastrointestinal conditions is concerned. Hydrogen and methane breath tests for evaluation of resistant carbohydrates.

This review considers in detail the background, principles, techniques, limitations and advantages of the hydrogen and methane breath tests. Resistant food carbohydrates, defined as dietary carbohydrates partly or totally escaping small intestinal assimilation, are fermented in the human colon. This results in production of H2, CH4 and volatile fatty acids. Increased colonic H2 production is a sensitive index of increased carbohydrate fermentation, and a rather constant fraction of the colonic H2 production is excreted by the lungs. It is therefore possible to assess mouth-to-caecum transit ti

A study of intracolonic hydrogen and methane levels during colonoscopy.

Gas samples were obtained during colonoscopy for analysis. Patients were prepared with polyethylene glycol (PEG) (N = 23), phosphate enema (N = 34) and mannitol (N = 4). Air insufflation was used in all procedures. High concentrations of hydrogen were detected in 3 out of 38 gas samples in the PEG group, in 2 of 41 samples in the phosphate enema group and in one of the 8 samples in the mannitol group. All patients had a coexisting intracolonic oxygen concentration > 5%. The results suggest that potentially explosive concentrations of hydrogen may occur after conventional bowel preparations, an
