The father's role in risk and resilience among Mexican-American adolescents.

Research suggests fathers are important to adolescent well-being, yet there is limited information regarding how fathering is associated with adolescent risk and resilience in Mexican American families. This cross-sectional study utilized a structural equation model to examine whether parent-child alienation mediated the relations between parental displays of warmth and hostility and the outcomes of adolescent resilience and delinquency in Mexican American families (N = 272). Results indicated that adolescent-perceived alienation from parents was a significant predictor of both resilience and

A Mexican American mother's experience in the neonatal intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND: Most parents would agree that the admission of an infant to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is stressful. Existing research is focused on white mothers, with little known about the experiences of Spanish-speaking, Mexican American mothers who have an infant in the NICU. PURPOSE: The purpose of this qualitative case study was to describe the experiences of a Spanish-speaking, Mexican American mother whose infant had been in the NICU. METHODS: Qualitative description was used to conduct this study. One Spanish-speaking, Mexican American mother who had an infant in the NICU

Prevalence and associated factors of overweight among Mexican-American adolescents.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of overweight and obesity and associated factors among Mexican-American adolescents, because obesity is more common among this ethnic group. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2002 data were analyzed for Mexican-American adolescents aged 12 to 19 years (n=4,109). Weight status was determined by sex-specific body mass index for age, and evaluated in relationship to demographic characteristics, participation in physical activities, dietary intake, and general health status. Overall, 40.9% of the adolescents were overw

Marital conflict and acculturation among Mexican American husbands and wives.

This study examined the relationship between acculturation and multiple dimensions of marital conflict among Mexican American husbands and wives. Participants were 151 husbands and wives who were recruited from a health maintenance organization in northern California and individually interviewed. More acculturated husbands and wives engaged in less avoidance of conflict and were more expressive of their feelings in an argument. Husbands who were more acculturated reported more conflict concerning sex and consideration for the other. Bicultural and more acculturated husbands reported that their

Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus in Mexican-American children.

To define the clinical and metabolic characteristics of children with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), we reviewed the medical records of 18 children and adolescents who met either or both of the following criteria for the diagnosis of the disease: evidence of continued endogenous secretion of insulin beyond that expected in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and satisfactory glycemic control with diet alone or in combination with an oral hypoglycemic agent more than 2 years from the time of diagnosis. Patients who met these criteria but had islet cell antibodies or insulin au

Sanitary product use by white, black, and Mexican American women.

In 1988-89, the use of menstrual sanitary products was surveyed among 699 white, 477 black, and 425 Mexican American women to detect age and racial or ethnic differences in product use that might explain the differences in the incidence of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) in these demographic categories. Forty percent of the women had never used tampons. Significantly more whites used tampons alone (26 percent) or with pads (36 percent) than did blacks. Proportionately more blacks used tampons alone (16 percent) or with pads (27 percent) compared with Mexican Americans, 11 percent of whom used tampo

Aggregation of physical activity habits in Mexican-American and Anglo families.

It is believed that families are important influences on the development of health habits, and the purpose of the present study was to examine the familial aggregation of physical activity. Physical activity habits were assessed by standardized interview in adults and children in 95 Anglo families and 111 Mexican-American families. The results indicated a moderate degree of aggregation of physical activity in both samples, and adjustment for body mass index was inconsequential. Intrafamily correlations tended to be higher in Mexican-Americans. Mother-child correlations usually were higher than

The effect of APOE4 on Alzheimer's plasma biomarkers among Mexican Americans in the HABS-HD cohort.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The relationship between APOE4 status and plasma biomarkers previously shown to be related to Alzheimer's risk have not been carefully examined among Mexican Americans. This research is needed to elucidate disparities within the Alzheimer's field by evaluating key genetic factors in an underrepresented population. The present study deepens our understanding of the interaction between biological and genetic factors for these populations with greater incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and helps address whether APOE4 confers similar risk of AD in Mexican Americans as

Insulin Clearance Is Associated with Hepatic Lipase Activity and Lipid and Adiposity Traits in Mexican Americans.

Reduction in insulin clearance plays an important role in the compensatory response to insulin resistance. Given the importance of this trait to the pathogenesis of diabetes, a deeper understanding of its regulation is warranted. Our goal was to identify metabolic and cardiovascular traits that are independently associated with metabolic clearance rate of insulin (MCRI). We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of metabolic and cardiovascular traits in 765 participants from the Mexican-American Coronary Artery Disease (MACAD) project who had undergone blood sampling, oral glucose tolerance test

Association of a corticotropin-releasing hormone receptor 1 haplotype and antidepressant treatment response in Mexican-Americans.

There are well-replicated, independent lines of evidence supporting a role for corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) in the pathophysiology of depression. CRH receptor 1 (CRHR1), which we first mapped in the brain in 1994, has been implicated in the treatment of depression and anxiety. We studied the association of CRHR1 genotypes with the phenotype of antidepressant treatment response in 80 depressed Mexican-Americans in Los Angeles who completed a prospective randomized, placebo lead-in, double-blind treatment of fluoxetine or desipramine, with active treatment for 8 weeks. Subjects were inc

High Prevalence of Hepatic Fibrosis, Measured by Elastography, in a Population-Based Study of Mexican Americans.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Hepatic fibrosis is a primary risk factor for cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, which affect a disproportionate number of Hispanics in the United States. We aimed to determine the prevalence of significant fibrosis, measured by point shear-wave elastography (pSWE), and determine characteristics of hepatic fibrosis and simple steatosis in a population-based study of Mexican American Hispanics in south Texas. METHODS: Liver stiffness was measured by pSWE, performed by 2 separate operators, for 406 participants in the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort from 2015 through 2017

The role of dialect, gender, and race in children's friendship choices: Evidence from Mexican monolinguals and Mexican-American bilinguals.

This work investigated whether Mexican-American bilingual children and Mexican monolingual children (ages 4-6; N = 245) use Spanish varieties (Puerto Rican vs. Mexican) when making friendship judgments for themselves (1st person) and/or for others (3rd person), and whether children prioritize dialect varieties over race and gender categories. On a dialect discrimination task, both groups of children distinguished between the Spanish varieties. When choosing a friend for themselves (1st person judgments), both groups of children preferred a character who spoke their own dialect (Mexican Spanish

Injury in children of low-income Mexican, Mexican American, and non-Hispanic white mothers in the USA: a focused ethnography.

Several studies indicate that rates of serious pediatric injury are higher among Hispanics than among non-Hispanic whites in the USA. To investigate possible contributory factors, we interviewed 50 Mexican, 30 Mexican American, and 30 non-Hispanic white mothers in their own homes in the same low-income neighborhoods of Southern California. Mothers were identified via door-to-door canvassing in areas with high rates of pediatric injury. We observed household conditions and behaviors and obtained a detailed family history, including accounts of any occurrence of serious injury in a child under 5
