The course of the disease, cutaneous leishmaniasis, caused by the intracellular protozoan parasite Leishmania tropica, differs markedly amongst various common inbred mouse strains. After intradermal injection of 1 x 10(6) promastigotes to young female specific pathogen-free (SPF) derived mice, persistent infection characterized by an expanding ulcerous lesion is seen in BALB/c and DBA/2 mice. Some strains of mice are known to be relatively resistant to hepatic or intestinal amebic infections. In order to know if the intestinal resistance is expressed few hours after infection, we inoculated axenic amebae in three inbred strains of mice either by direct intracecal injection or by infection of a washed-closed cecal loop. Aristolochic acids (AA), present in Aristolochia plants, are the toxin responsible for Chinese herbs nephropathy (CHN), a rapidly progressive tubulointerstitial nephritis (TIN). We established three immunocompetent murine models of pulmonary mucormycosis to determine the involvement of the adaptive immune response in host resistance in pulmonary mucormycosis, a rapidly fatal disease caused mainly by Rhizopus spp. Immunocompetent inbred (C57BL/6, BALB/c) and outbred (Swiss) strains of mice were inoculated with R. oryzae via the intratracheal route. The nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus is an excellent model for intestinal helminth parasitism.
