Efficacy and safety of miconazole for oral candidiasis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The objective of this study is to assess the efficacy and safety of miconazole for treating oral candidiasis. Twelve electronic databases were searched for randomized controlled trials evaluating treatments for oral candidiasis and complemented by hand searching. The clinical and mycological outcomes, as well as adverse effects, were set as the primary outcome criteria. Seventeen trials were included in this review. Most studies were considered to have a high or moderate level of bias. Miconazole was more effective than nystatin for thrush. For HIV-infected patients, there was no significant d

Miconazole as inflammatory agent. II: Time course of pleurisy and drug interference.

1. Miconazole-induced pleurisy was characterized by edema development and leukocyte infiltration. 2. This response was inhibited by chlorpheniramine, methysergide and steroidal and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. 3. After miconazole injection, no mast cells were found in the pleural cavity. 4. Our results support the concept that biogenic amines released from mast cells and cyclooxygenase-derived mediators may contribute to the pathogenesis and evolution of miconazole inflammation.

Efficacy evaluation of a novel submicron miconazole emulsion in a murine cryptococcosis model.

Submicron emulsions of miconazole were stabilized by using a combination of three emulsifiers comprising phospholipids, poloxamer, and deoxycholic acid (DCA). The presence of DCA was vital for prolonged emulsion stability owing to its contribution to the elevated zeta potential of the emulsion. Further, the results by the phospholipid surface labelling colorimetric technique clearly suggested that poloxamer molecules interacted with phospholipid polar-head groups of the mixed DCA-phospholipid interfacial film, resulting in the stabilization of the emulsion by a steric enthalpic entropic mechan

[A case of chronic necrotizing pulmonary aspergillosis effectively treated with miconazole inhalation].

A 63-year-old male was hospitalized due to persistent cough on August 19, 1991. He was suspected to have pulmonary tuberculosis based on the findings of chest roentgenograms. He was therefore given anti-tuberculous drugs and antibiotics as of the first hospital day. Approximately two months later, he developed high fever, and the infiltrative shadows on his chest roentgenograms worsened. Therefore, he was readmitted to our hospital on October 31, 1991. Despite the use of several antibiotics, his high fever persisted and the infiltrative shadows on chest roentgenography continued to worsen afte

Combined intravenous miconazole and intrathecal amphotericin B for treatment of disseminated coccidioidomycosis.

A patient received a previously unreported combination of intravenous miconazole and intrathecal amphotericin B for the treatment of disseminated coccidioidomycosis with central nervous system involvement. After first having been treated with amphotericin B, followed by a course of miconazole therapy, the patient responded with remarkable clinical and serologic improvement to the combination of intrathecal amphotericin B and intravenous miconazole. The combination should be considered in the treatment of disseminated coccidioidomycosis with central nervous system involvement.

R34000, a dioxolane imidazole in the therapy for experimental coccidioidomycosis. Comparison with miconazole and econazole.

Comparisons were made on the therapeutic influence of three imidazole drugs in experimental lethal coccidioidomycosis of mice. When administered by the intramuscular route, miconazole and a closely related structural analogue, econazole, were effective in preventing death, restricting fungal replication in the lungs, and minimizing the extent of extrapulmonary dissemination. Neither drug was as effective when administered by the oral route as by the intramuscular route. This contrasted sharply with results obtained using R34000, a dioxolane imidazole. It was very highly effective when administ

Drug repurposing-inspired design of miconazole-based 1,2,3-triazoles as antichagasic agents.

Drug-repurposing strategies have been widely explored to accelerate the development of new treatments for Chagas disease, leveraging compounds with previously established safety profiles. Among these, azole antifungals have attracted attention due to their inhibitory activity against 14-α-lanosterol demethylase (CYP51), an enzyme also present in Trypanosoma cruzi and essential for its ergosterol biosynthesis. Inhibition of this pathway compromises parasite membrane integrity and function and several azoles, including posaconazole, ravuconazole, and miconazole, have demonstrated significant in

Tailored Sticky Solutions: 3D-Printed Miconazole Buccal Films for Pediatric Oral Candidiasis.

In this research, 3D-printed antifungal buccal films (BFs) were manufactured as a potential alternative to commercially available antifungal oral gels addressing key considerations such as ease of manufacturing, convenience of administration, enhanced drug efficacy and suitability of paediatric patients. The fabrication process involved the use of a semi-solid extrusion method to create BFs from zein-Poly-Vinyl-Pyrrolidone (zein-PVP) polymer blend, which served as a carrier for drug (miconazole) and taste enhancers. After manufacturing, it was determined that the disintegration time for all fi

Artemisinins, new miconazole potentiators resulting in increased activity against Candida albicans biofilms.

Mucosal biofilm-related fungal infections are very common, and the incidence of recurrent oral and vulvovaginal candidiasis is significant. As resistance to azoles (the preferred treatment) is occurring, we aimed at identifying compounds that increase the activity of miconazole against Candida albicans biofilms. We screened 1,600 compounds of a drug-repositioning library in combination with a subinhibitory concentration of miconazole. Synergy between the best identified potentiators and miconazole was characterized by checkerboard analyses and fractional inhibitory concentration indices. Hexac

Factors affecting on in vitro release of miconazole from in situ ocular gel.

The reason for conducting this study is to prolong release of miconazole in the ocular site of action by ocular-based gels (OBGs) formulations. The formulation factors affecting on the release from OBG should be studied using various gelling agents in various concentrations to achieve the improvement in retention and residence time in response to prolonged release. In this study, the formulations were prepared using carbopol 940, pectin, sodium alginate, poloxamer 407, and poly(methacrylic acid) at 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% w/v, respectively. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose E5 (HPMC E5) 1% was added as

Miconazole Nitrate Microparticles in Lidocaine Loaded Films as a Treatment for Oropharyngeal Candidiasis.

Oral candidiasis is an opportunistic infection that affects mainly individuals with weakened immune system. Devices used in the oral area to treat this condition include buccal films, which present advantages over both oral tablets and gels. Since candidiasis causes pain, burning, and itching, the purpose of this work was to develop buccal films loaded with both lidocaine (anesthetic) and miconazole nitrate (MN, antifungal) to treat this pathology topically. MN was loaded in microparticles based on different natural polymers, and then, these microparticles were loaded in hydroxypropyl methylce

Preparation, and Assessment of Antidermatophyte Activity of Miconazole-Urea Water-Soluble Film.

Cutaneous mycoses, particularly tinea pedis caused by Trichophyton rubrum, are commonly known infections in humans. They are still considered as a major public health problem worldwide affecting the quality of life due to prolonged period of treatment and development of drug resistance, which leads to recurrence of infections. The objective of our study was to assess the effectiveness of miconazole in the presence and absence of urea, as a penetration enhancer, against T. rubrum and to formulate both of them in a water-soluble film to be applied topically for the purpose of treating tinea pedi

In vitro miconazole susceptibility of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and Staphylococcus aureus.

BACKGROUND: The emergence and dissemination of meticillin-resistant staphylococci has created significant treatment challenges in veterinary medicine and increased interest in topical therapy for superficial infections. Concern has been expressed regarding the use of some topical antimicrobials in animals because of the potential for emergence of resistance, and additional options are required. Miconazole has limited antibacterial properties that include antistaphylococcal activity. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to assess the in vitro susceptibility of Staphylococcus

Biometrological assessment of the preventive effect of a miconazole spray powder on athlete's foot.

Prevention of athlete's foot is a difficult problem. Using non-invasive biometrological methods, we evaluated the changes induced in the stratum corneum by a 3-week treatment with miconazole spray powder. A total of 16 athletes apparently at risk of developing tinea pedis, but without any evidence for the disease at the time of inclusion, participated in the study. They applied the medicated powder to one foot daily, while the other foot remained untreated to serve as a control. No adverse events occurred. In comparison with the control site, the capacitance of the toeweb skin was significantl

Miconazole: a preliminary review of its therapeutic efficacy in systemic fungal infections.

Miconazole is an imidazole antifungal drug which has recently become available for systemic use. Its antifungal activity has been well studied and it is active in vitro against a wide range of fungi. Published and unpublished reports of the use of miconazole in conditions such as systemic or mucocutaneous candidosis, coccidioidomycosis, fungal meningitis, and paracoccidioidomycosis (which seems especially responsive) have often been encouraging, particularly in view of the serious, refractory nature of the conditions treated, but in most areas of use experience is limited. There are few effect
